FRIDAY EVENINti. HKC. 13. 1K72. " ■■ —- '■ ■■ ■• .-■' ■- i = RKSorncr.st or tir«ixia to re dc< V.'tlDl'rn BT RAILROADS. BY A CITIZEN OF TIIE STATE. The loc»l resource to be developed by the construction ol railroads consist chiefly of iron, coal, lumber, gypsum, salt, marble and agricultural products. To develops these resources rcqu res a just and liberal policy to attract capital and laboi, and had to the establishment of mills, factories, furnaces, mines, quarries, and other industries, but especially does it require encouragement lo parties willing and able to construct lines of communica tion, and afford the greatly needed facilities for transportation. It is not probable that under sny general railroad law any more trunk lines would be constructed between tho East and West .for many years. Nearly all practical loutes across the mountains are occupied by the great lines now in operation or in progress of construction, but hundreds of lateral roads, colinecting with- the trunk lnies, tnay be completed, so that every val ley, every existing Settlement, e\ery pro posed colony, every county may hi.?; communications iiit'oidiutr. facilities for cheap and convenient transit lor persons aud property, and presenting by such f'acil. ties the strongest possible inducements to colonization, settlement and improvement. What is needed to secure these benefits is a system of cheap local roads that can be constructed by private capital Willi the aid of county or town subscriptions, and operated either by engines or by horse powar. The resources of Virginia, including West Virginia, are probably greater than those of any other State, Pennsylvania pocaibly, but not certainly, excepted. Coal and irou ore abound ih the Shenandoah Valley, and in all the western aud southwestern coun ties of the State. The great gypsum deposit of Stny the county I- almo.-t the only one in the United States, and at low tales would Mii'oril a large volume uf tonnage. This cit posit is fifteen miles m extent. liient Variety) of vareigated marbles exists in severaj localities ; beds of lion ore, adapted to the manufacture of bessantr steel aie found near the North Carolina line. The valleys of Virginia are naturally mole productive than those of Pennsylva nia, and her mountains are covered With vegetation to their summits, and c apabie o lurniishiog blue glass pasturage to subsist every description of .ive stock, while those of the Northern slates are rocky, sterile and of little value, ekC-pl in the coal le gions, for their mineral production. Any unpidipaeiit thrown in thu way of J the con-sti uctiou of railroads by taxes or otherwise, must retard that development, which it should be the object of legislation to encourage. That the railroads of the South should be purchased and controlled by Northern j capital, tiial combinations should be forta- [ ed, nnd local lines consolidated into great * arteries of iraeie and travel, is b> some re- [ Karrit-dwith distavor, bill il the results are ', destiubie, and if the South has not the cap - j' tal to secure them, why object to the I source trom which the necessary capital is I derived? Is theie the most remoie po- j- j bilitv that these combined lines can or will ' be operated to the detriment ol Southern interest? Arc hot the owners of these lines disposed to make their properly re siunerativc, and in what other way can this be done but by developing resources and increasing business—ami is not this precisely what the South requires?. Is it prububie that a line of policy which has beVn attended w th the most beiiiticent ie sul am other sate would be abandoned, wnen cit zns of loose slates become inter ested in Southern railroads ? What has been the policy of the Penn sylvania Railroad Cumpany? Nearly twenty veurs ago, when the business ol that road was bm l~>o,ot)i> tons per annum, and it was embarrassed by suie taxes and ad- > TBise legislation, tuts policy Was prescribed in one of its annual report.-,: " Low rates with moderate dividends must n.dicutc the settled policy upon which the operations of the road are to be conducted. Increase of trade, activity uf business, aud the exti-n ston of our great cities, onstitutu objects of greater importance than piotiis upon iransportaiion. It is immeasurably better lor the mieivsts of every portion of the state that the road should do a large business, even with small profits, rather than reanae the same profits on a smaller tonnage." Such were the views expressed and f.uch the policy adopted in 1834, and what have been the results? From 160,000 tons the stream has swoden to over 7,000,000 tons per annum, and on thu Reading Railroad • the m ivement of freight has reached equ 1 proportions. The last report of J. Ed-ar Thomson states that the average charge per net ton per mile upon all freights during thevtarwas only 1.388-1,000 tents, but little more than a cent and a third per ton per mile; yet thu receipts on freights alone reached lotirteen millions of dollars, the whole receipts nearly nineteen millions, and tho net profits nearly seven millions. Contrast these results with iho offiuiul re ports of the Board of Public Works of Viignia for 1870, the most recent in pos session of the writer. The first column gives the whole number of toi s carrief, and the second tha average charge per ton per mile: Ton=. The force of this comparison would be weakened by comment. The facts and figures appeal to the General Assem bly of the Slate for such remedy as it may be in their power to aft"'id. A Hon»cl«'"'-»>»« , "!ii .lonrnnl, BY U ->.v. lIAIIA. Monday, Kov. 11.—When one persmi i* dninit tlm wink alone in a farm-house, where there are always so many thiinjK to keep one busy, in older to have all done nicely and yet have time left for acwing or a little rest, they must study the economy of labor and the easiest ways of doing woik. For instance, washing dishes, though it seems hut a small task, yet being repeated three times each day, ami nay after day, it finally becomes tedious and takes tip much of oi.e's lime. For this reason, any eood wav of i-horlening this process is welcomed by the weary house- W -. Last summer, while visiting in a large household, where no servants were kept, but each member of the lamily had their own particular part of the work to per form, I saw the following way practiced with 8o much success that I have since adopted it: When the dishes have been washed well in good warm soap suds, rtnae them in boiling water and turn them on their edges iv a wooden bowl with a linen towel in the bottom to absorb the water as it drains from the dishes. If the water is sufficiently hot, the dishes will be perfect ly dry arnl clean in a very few moments, m.ue so than if wiped with a cloth, and the work performed in less than half the time usually occupied in vvping. ■ Value of Poultry Manure.— From actual experiment it has been found that lhe diopp'iigs Irom four Brahman for one night Weighed in one case exactly one pound, and in another more than three tourths of a pound, an average of nearly four ounces each bird, By drying, this was reduced to not q lite one and a half ounces. Other breeds make leas, but, al lowing only one ounce per bird daily ot . dry dung, fifty f.wls will make, in their roostini:-hoiise alone, ten cwt. per annual of the best manure in the world. Hence half an acre of poultry will make more ' than enough manure for one acre of land, seven cwt. of guano behiK the usual quan- , tity applied per aerie, and poultry manure ; richc-i than cuano in ammonia and feililizng s.tlig. No other stock will give an equal return in this wav, and these i iiguresdemand canf il attenl on from the largo fanner.
