ffiTcmitfl State jeWimll MONDAY EVKNI.SIi, lIEC. 18. I*7_. | Bot In Potatoes-Stnrcli. It had been understood that the disease or decay of potatoes did not destroy- the starch portion; but the potatoes are put in a condition ttiat the manulacturcrd could not fttvo the starch; it is heavier than water and of course sinks to the b utora of the tub as a sediment wiien working sound potatoes ; but floated away when Working diseased ones—causing large losa. In some recent interesting experiment. with Uie microscope, Pmf. T. Taylor, of tho Agricultural Department, claims to have discovered the reason of this, and the means of preventing it—a discovery of ?;reat advantage to starch makers and armers, and which has r.ever been pub lished till now. He finds, with powerful microscopes, that the starch portions are contained in sacks or bladders ol small globules; in fact, double sacks, wittiastra a ofnitrogei* oun matter between them, and inside of this starch pai tides float m a liquid matter. With sound or healthy potatoes this organism is solid or compact enough to allow the starch globules to be crushed and broken up when tho potatoes are grated cr ground; but in the decayed potatoes this is not the case, and consequently the starch runs off with the liquid and other nißtter aud is lost. Understanding these principles and facts, mechanic skill can soon provide tho neces sary machines for fully utilizing the decajed or diseased potatoes, if manufac turers will take active measures to secure i it. This result shows another of the adran- I tages which result from tho microscopical operations of Professor Taylor, and which i we think are worthy the attention of Con gress, as they have already received the approbation of scientific juumal3 and some agricultural colleges, as well a?) fruit-grow ers. Particularly, in studying fungoid J growths, mildews, blight, Its., examina tions by the microscope have proved bene- r flcial; also, in regard to insects which , work injury to fruit trees—their habits and , prevention—have these operations proved of service to tiie farmers aud oichardists of ' our country. 0. rz «* "Yellows" on Pouch Tree*. During the past summer Prof. Thomas j . Tat lor, at the Department of Agriculture, performed a renes of nice experiments with the microscope and other means to ascertain the cause and the cure of the disease in peach trees known ns "yellows." He experimented on bark and leaves of j both healthy and diseased trees, by taking I portions of each kind, arid subjecting them ( to careful inspection under magnifying J glasses. With..v' going inlo detailed de* . scriptkm of these valuable experiments, we l here give the principal conclusions and ' results arrived at. The " yellows" i are one lorm of fungoid growth, and « in those trees most affected by , this disease, there wa3 found to be a lock of earthy matter, as alkalies, &c, in the leaves ami bark ; and the remedy suggest ed by Prifcssor Taylor is to apply allies i or lime around the roots of the trees ; the best form, he thinks, is warm ley from , ashes or lime water poured on the ground, to soak through, so that the roots can take it up and carry it through the tree and ' branches. t The practical lesson of this is, that there ' «ould be ashes and lime in tho soil. C. , __» Compost Ue*ps.— It is often recom- i mended that when manure is thrown into heaps in the field, it should be covered with earth, to prevent the escape of the ammonia. The experiments of Dr. Voelck- ' cr, at the Royal Agricultural College, at !, Cirencester, in England, havo established the fact that the evaporation of ammonia j from large heaps of manure goes on ' but slightly; for tha roast ia that r, during the decomposition of the manure certain organic acids are formed at lhe same time the ammonia is evolved, . and then immediately unite with the ana- ' mania, forming non-volatile compounds. j There i.s an active escape of ammonia . from the interior of large heaps, whore tho » heat is too great for the chemical change ~ referred to; but, as it approaches the ex terior part of the heap, where tho heat is s very much less, the ammonia is complete ly taken up by the organic acids and re tained. There will be but a trifling escape of am monia while there is sufficient moisture to i retain it, for water absorbs and retains J many hundred times its bulk of ammonia gas at ordinary temperature. These non- _ volatile compounds, from being highly solu ble in water, are liable to bo washed away at every rain-storm, giving thu well-known n color to the draining* of manure-heaps. 5 *_- j WHEN anybody tells you of a gardener D that understands all about horticulture and 1 agriculture, and that he can ho hired, don't believe a word of it, for there aro no such to be hired. Such a man can earn more than you can aflord to give him ; and if he : has reuse enough to understand the busi« j ness, he will also have enough to know this. 1 V.2JJ ~ 1.
