FRIDAY KVKN"(;, JAN. 31, 1878. -j.-««:L«M.Mi THE BABY. We measured riotous baby Against the cottage wall; A lily grew at the threshold, And tho boy was just as tall /'-. royal tiger lily, With spots of put pie und gold, And a heart like a jeweled chsiice, The fi agrant dew to hold. Without the blackbird whistled, High up In the old roof trees, A nd io and fro at the window The red rose rocked her bees; And the wee pink fists of baby Were never a moment still, riiiitching nt shine nnd shadow That d inccd at the lattlce-slil. Ah me ! in a darkened chamber, With the sunshine shut away, Through tears that fell like titter rsiu, . We measured the baby to-day; And the little bare feet that were dimpled And sweet as a budding iwe. Lay side by side together In the hush of n long repose. Up from the dainty pillow. White as the risen dawn, A fair little face lay smiling With the light of heaven thereon ; And the dear little hands, like rose leaves Dropped from tho rose, lay still, Never to catch at the sunshine That crept to the shrouded sill. We measured the sleeping baby With ribbons white as snow, For the shining rosewood casket That waited him below. And out of the darkened chamber We went with a childless moan ; For To the height of tho sinless angels. Our dear little one had grown. GOB itl M.ns. Cod liveih ever; Wherefore, soul, dospair thou never, What though thou tread with bleeding fet t A thorny path of grief and gloom ! thy God will choose the way most meet To lead thee heavenward—lead thee home; For this life's long night of sadness, He will give thee peace and gladness : Souls, forget not in thy pains, i iral o'er all wreverrehins. lleiillh hihl in!, iii. It is no exaggeration to gay that liealih h a large ingti client in what the world calls lalcni. A man without H may be a giant in intellect, bit his deeds will be the deeds of a dwarf. On the contrary, let him have a quick circulation, a good digestion, the bulk, th<.'w.H and sinews of a man, and ihe alnerity, the unthinking confidence inspired by these, anil, though having but a tliimbieluTof brain, lie will either blun der upon sucoesni, or sat failure at dcllancc. It is line, especially i:i this country, that tlie number of centaurs in every cimmunily— of- men in wheal heroic intellects are allied * wit'i bodily constitutions as lough as those of horses—is mi mil; thai, in general, a man has reason to think himself well off in the lotter* of life if lie thaws the prize of a healthy stomach without a mind, or the prize of a fine intel lect with a crazy stomach. But of tho two, v weak mir.d in a Herculean frame Is bet ter lhaii a giant mind in a crazy consti tution. A pound of energy with au ounce of talent will achieve greater results than n pound of talent with an ounce of energy. The first requisite to success in life is to be a good annua!. In any of the learned piofessions, a vigorous constitution is equal to at least fifty per cent, more brain. Wit, judgment, imagination, eloo.ucncc, all the qualifies of the mind, attain thereby a force and splendor to winch they could never approach without it. But intellect in a weak body is " like gold iff a spent swim mer's pocket." A mechanic may have tniiiiof the sharpest edge arfll highest polish, but what are these without a vigorous arm and hand ? Of what use is it that your mind has become a vast granary ol knowl edge, if you have nut the strength to turn the key ? Bkain-Wohk.—Does brain-.vork kill, or brain worry? That is the question which has been started by the London Times, and is now under discussion in the various papers. Many of us pray to be delivered lrom sudden death; and do we worry ourselves into it ? Jf we do can we help it ? To most of us it is not given to choose our lives, to avoid the rough places, to gently shoulder to one side disagreeable facts. We must climb over the rocks, though they hurt ns sore, aud the difficul ties, however they annoy us, must be met with brain fret and wear until they are conquered, or we have passed them. They are as real, living, annoying as any tangie ble acho or pain could be ; as bruising and irritating as the peas in the shoes of the pilgrims of old. Nervous health is one thing, and moral health, but purely physi cal health is quite another and different thing. Calm and steady mental work is conducive to long life ; but nervous emo tion, mental work that is a constant urging, and at the same time, is an unhinging of the even tenor of the mind, eats away the brain faster than any mental labor, no matter how hard, that is systematic. As .men do not really die of heart disease as often as supposed, ljut of apoplexy or congestion of the lungs, so they do not die of brain-work, but brain-worry. ,S;ott died of it, Southey, Swift, Horace" < Ireeley, and probabl3 r Thackeray. A writer in the Boston Cultivator thinks . tho farmer who works from eight to ten hours a day, and then devotes the rest of his working hours 13 study and to planning for future work, nine times out of ten will be more successful, will live longer and live happier, and exert a wider and better influ ence atnoog his neighbors, than he who labors from twelve to sixteen hours, and allows his brain power to remain idle. Muscle may be a primary element of suc cess in farming as it must be in many other occupations, but unless controlled by a sound and active intellect, it will accom plish little. He adds: "When i go about among fanners and note the want of system so manifest in I (heir work, the'haphazard way in which they manage their affairs, and the amount uptime and labor which they absolutely waste through ignorance, carelessness, aud lack of forethought, f wonder that their re ward is as great as it is. I have seen men tug with all their strength at huge stones, when by taking advantage of one of the most simple of mechanical laws, they might have moved the stone in much les-s time, and with but a trifling expenditure of muscular power ; and Ihe lifting of those stones was simply au illustration of the way in which ihey did the whole of their farm work. —Jeff, Connolly, a colored boy about ten tears old, has been committed to the Hali fax jail on the charge of murdering Wm.
