FKIDAY KVbVENINtt, MAY 2, IS7S\ Tho Model Hired "Inil Indoor*. In my last article 1 made some remarks in reference to the outdoor duties of a model hired man. In this, my last one on the sub jict, your indulgence, editors and readers, j; dwred while 1 have my say about some of the indoor duties of this important per- Eiinago. The writer having been a hired man, may therefore reasonably be expect ed to be able to tell what he actually knows about tho subject, and perhaps be able to make some suggestions that will be worth considering. There is a great disposition among those who work for a living, to find fault with their occupation and to be continually long ing for asocial position beyond their imme diate reach, forgetting, as too many young men do, that nioiit, tact, skill and indus try, arc never at a discount. If the same • nxicly and energy to fill some coveted position in society, that is manifested by this class of fault-finders, were expended in making a more thorough preparation for the position they covet, their ambition in this lespect would not long remain unsatisfied. 1 Setter, by far, actual merit and ability than the intluence of wealthy relatives or a ruperabundance of cheek. Many of the complaints of our working men arc as unjust as others are just and proper. The lured man who is boorish in his habits, and who has no sympathetic re gard lor his social surroundings, has no i ight to expect the s.tuie courtesy and at tention that would otherwise properly be- I long to him. lie often complains because ■lie is not admitted into the faui'ly circle of his employer. 110 has not the slightest idea that his personal hf bits have anything to do with the matter; on the con trary, ho attributes it to the aris tocratic tendenecs of the family. The writer of this is a firm believer in the influences of association, and is therefore strongly in favor of taking the young laborer into the family circle —a custom which has long prevailed invariably in nearly all the states. It is better for the laborer, for by the time he has acquired sufficient property to buy a farm of his own, he will, by reason of his social sur- Hou.idings, in tho majority of cases, pos sess sufficient culture and refinement to | fit him for almost any position in our Amer- I *au social structure. It must be remem cred, however, that many things now common in every well regulated farm house, would, before the introduction of railroads, have been denounced as savoring of the aristocratic order of things. As our general civilization advances, new wants arise and with them a certain degree of contempt of many old habits and customs. Habits of uncleanlincss, which were once permitted, now oll'end. The hired man who is an inveterate tobacco chewer and expectatorator, or one who marches directly from the stable to the table having on his dirt-covered coat or uncleaned boots, should not be at all surprised at the apparent coolness of the reception ho meets, which is to be mainly attributed to the careless ness which has rendered his person odor ous. Attached to every farm-house there should be an outer kitchen or wash-room, where the ovcrshirt worn iv the stable could be put off and a pair of slippers sub stituted while breakfasting. The laborer to be valuable must be iutcl ligeri. If intelligent, he is sensitive, and feels that he is the equal of his employer and his family ; and any act on their part that tends to make him feel that he is slighted, induces him to make a change in the hope of bettering his condition, and the thrifty, well-to-do farmer the ser vice of just such a man as he needs the most. It must be admitted that very many hired men are c-reless in regard to their clothing and perso.ial cleanliness; this is too often true of the employer himself, who, while working his way up from the position of hired man, has no doubt ac auircd some habits that his cultured chil dren—who have the advantage of a more refined society—regret. Among these may be mentioned one of frescoing the butter with various kinds of food which adhere to his unwiped knife, which, in the inexcusable absence of a butter knife, should be cltaned on a piece of bread before being thrust into tho butter, salt or other dish. Others have a habit, while eating liquid from a spoon, of making such a nose that you are reminded of one made by a leaky suction pump. The habit of using the tooth brush daily would be duly apreciated by all with whom one comes in contact. The neglect of this precaution may account for the appaient inattentiveness of your listener, who with averted face, gazes into space while you vociferously press your argument.— Httral World. New Mode up Forming Metaeic Oknaments.—An improved process for producing thin metal ornaments for deco rating the exterior and interior of dwell ings, and for other purposes, employs an open metal mould made of cast iron, rep resenting in intaglb the ornament which it is desired to produce. Into this mould the metal to form the ornament is poured, and the mould being emptied of so much of the metal as remains fluid ashell of metal will remain, which will be an exoot counterpart of the mould, and which being removed therefrom, constitutes tbe ornament, and is ready for use. The same end could ob viously be attained in electroplating, and in the device itself there is little novelty, as it has been used in the production of ar tificipl fruits from wax, in which operation a little wax is poured in a plaster mould and the mould is then moved about to cause the wax to adhere equally to the in terior in every part.
