Thi.4 is quite a lively place, being the b
station on the liichmond and Danville rail- ■'
road for the county, and the adjoining *
county of North Carolina ; and is tho point n
of transshipment for considerable freight J
from the boats on the Dan river to the rail- J
road. ,i
Naturally it is a handsome location, and
has enjoyed rapid prosperity, having been _
mostly built up within a few years past.
11 is the centre til' a large tobacco lradc,sales
of many thousand pounds being made every ii
Friday, in tho warehouses ; lam informed C
that more 101,(100 pounds were sold here J]
last Friday ; the sales to-day were large, at a
prices ranging from $2.00 to $37.00 per a
pound for different grades of leaf—some of Jj
it very line—the best yellow leaf. ti
Mr. Ballow &. 00. are manufiicturing a J>
newly-patented flue for drying tobacco, iv {!
barns, which is pronounced very good. n
Then* arc in the place the necessary ■
stores, mechanic shops and schools. Among , (
those who arc dealing in merchandise and o'
tobacco aro Mr. John W. McKenzie, an
enterprising gentleman and a good friend _
of Tin*. Journal. There are two hotels r ,
here—the Traverse House, where lam J
stepping, kept by J. Traverse, a very Is
comfortable and homelike-place, with J
charming ladies and an obliging landlord ; t
few public houses make the traveler feel gi
more like enjoying the comforts of home. 5

The young ladies and gentlemen of tho hn
town are wide awake in active preparations Jjjj
for a strawberry festival and tableaux to
take place next Wednesday evening, which _

From the dryness of the fields, and th
tho dust in the roads, it appears there has de

this county as in some others. at
The crops are looking moderately well; Hi
fruit promises fair; cherries are ripe and "J
plentiful. Luxuriant fields of clover, in
many places, give beauty and perfume to _
the traveler, and promise profit to the cul
tivators, wherever continually grown. r l
From examination I am well satisfied that in
no other small outlay of expense will O
afford as much benefit to this section as J[
ten to twenty bushels of lime to the acre, st
and the same quantity of salt; it will make ta
better wheat as well as tobacco soils, for jjj

been very warm, and to-night the winds
blows hard with rain and thunder, which ___

There, upon the bank of the Potomac,

vesting place. Since the close of the war b8
tho friends to the Union have esteemed it a
pleasure and duty to visit and beautify and O.
adorn the mounds that mark the repose of Jjj
those who here lie buried. This year, as O o
usual, a number of the "true and tried" w
were upon ihe field with a handsome sup- *
ply of choice flowers. After they were t r
strewn upon the graves, the company re
paired to the shade of tho surrounding
woods, and seated upon the ground,
listened to the remarks of several speakers j
—narrating events and circumstances of L
the battle, and the Initial of thoso who V
fell. The steep bluff over which our sol- rl
diers were forced was visited, and all felt
satisfied with the results of tho day. It is
a happy thought to those whose friends lie '_!
