T1I1E Proprietor of this establishment has visited the principal citits, towns and colleges in the United Stales, as a Reporter, and as a Teacher of STENOG RAPHY, and is now induced, by the so licitation ol numerous respectable indh viduals, in various parts of the country, to propose a plan for communicating a know ledge of Ins art to all those who may con sider it worth their attention, hut who, from their remote situation, cannot en joy the benefits of his personal instruc tion. The system, a knowledge of which it is proposed to communicate, may be con sidered the standard of American Sten ography,— it is almost the only plan used in the United States, and is sold by most most r>f the Booksellers, to the exclusion of all other systems. It lias passed through seven large editions, and has been recent ly much improved, steriotyped, and em bellished with seventeen new copper plate engravings, illustrative of the the oiy. A copy of this work will constitute the first three numbers of a contemplated se ries of printed lectures, or periodical num bers, to be published weekly, and sent, through the medium of the mail, or other wise, to each subscriber, till a thorough knowledge of the art shall have bi-eri com municated. It will bo the object of these Lectures, not only to convey to each individual a complete practical knowledge of Short hand Writing, but to point out tne most eligible way to employ it at a labor and time saving method, for acquiring other useful knowledge, by performing, in min utes and hours, that which must otherv'ise require days and weeks. Should the above plan succeed, as there is reason to believe it may, these periodic al numbers will be continued monthly, at one dollar per annum, under the following title, to wit:— THE AMERICAN REPERTORY OJ Jlrts, Sciences, and Useful Literature. The object of this work will be to fur nish, in numbers, to the rising generation a Miniature Encyclopedia or General Cabinet, embracing in its course a con cise view or epitome of the most interest ing topics of the age, with the exception of religion and politics. As a matter of great convenience to the reader, especial ly for future reference, the contents of each page will be denoted by appropriate words in the margin—to which marginal words, a general index will be framed up on the principleof Locke’s Common-place Book, thus furnishing to each reader an infallible key to the whole, or any partic ular part which he may wish to re-exam ine—at the same time suggestions to the aspirant after knowledge, a method, which it pursued cannot fail to produce to him incalculable oenefils. bv an ultimate sav. ing of time and labor —for it is asserted, without the fear of refutation, that a young man, who will first acquire a facility in Short-hand Writing, and proceed to write daily in a Common-Place Book upon the principle here suggested, will acquire more useful knowledge in one year, than it would be possible for him to obtain in three years, by any other plan that has ev er been devised. In carrying out this design, three im portant principles will be constantly in view. First.—To select from the great mass of human knowledge that only which is useful. Second—To condense it as fa* as its practical utility will admit. Third.—To systematize and arrange the whole in such a manner, that each and every portion shall be at immediate I command. t The scanty limits of a prospectus for bid the addition of other considerations in this place. TERMS. Tor,a full course of instruction as above mentioned, $2 50, payable in advance, or on the receipt of the fust three numbers of the periodical. All Postmasters are respectfully solici ted to act as agents in their respective neighborhoods. If a Postmaster procure but one subscriber, be will be entitled to a gratuitous copy of the published system, if four subscribers, to a full course of in struction, or &’2 50 from the money col iccieu , anu id like proportion tor a great er or less number of subscribers, that is to say, a commission of 20 per cent, for his services. Those who wish lor a more full explanation, or to see a specimen of the page, type, &,c. to be used, may no doubt be gratified by calling on Postmasters, who have been generally supplied with an Introduction to the system above re ferred to ; and also with a great variety of testimonials from those who have learned the art. 1 he issuing of numbers will commoner early in July, from and after which, each new applicant will be supplied, at the time of subscribing, with a perfect set from the beginning. Our’The publisher of any Newspaper or public Journal, who will ,give this Pros pectus a conspicuous Insertion, and for ward a copy ot the paper containing it, shall receive a regular series of the con templated lectures without other charge. July 2—’30 3t ALMOND LOTION, J1 certain remedy for Pimples, Frecles, Ringworms, Black worms, Tetters, Blotches, Car buncles, Tim Burns, Morphew, Tan. It is to be lamented that those persons whose skins are most delicate and natu rally best calculated to exhibit a superior degree of brilliancy and lustre, are sub ject to be effected, from being least com petent to bear those fluctuating changes of the weather, to which, in this country they are constantly exposd. The thickness and opacity of the com plexion arises from a want of energy in the ! skin to oppose and resist the density and humidity of the external atmosphere ; the insensible perspirable matter, which should pass off, (and which in skins of a coarse fibre does,) is in delicate textures prevent ed and checked in it§ escape from the pores and capillary arteries, where it is condensed, and lodges in the extremities of those vessels. Thus, by the detention of this matter, and its being looked up in the very body and substance of the skin, the skin becomas indurated, thickened thickene-l and opaque; hence what would otherwise have been and natnraliy is the best complexion, evidently become the reverse. It is, however some consolation to know, thai a very short use fo the Almond Lotion, will completely reduce all those inequali ties, by causing the skin slightly to peel, a vivid natural glow and fairness succeeds and the whole complexion, which was be fore deformed and disgusting with un healthy ane troublesome excresences, as sumes a happy and beautiful colour, clear from every speck and blemish. O. NORRIS,Sec, July 2—’30 2t COMPOUND FLUID EX tract of sarsaparilla, For extemporaneously making Lisbon Diet, Drink, &,c. THE extonsivo use of Sarsaparilla for some years past, :n Aludical practice, and tho trouble and difficulty which patients are sub jected to in making the Extract or Syrup, has rendered it an object of importance to procure a preparation ot it in a more convenient form than thoso usually prescribed. Sarsaparilla re quires considerable boiling to tako up tho ex tractive matter and it is consequently most fre quently improperly mado by thoso unacquainted with Pharmaceutical preparations. To obviate these oiihculties G. W. Carpenter has manufac tured a fluid extract of Sarsaparilla, possessing all the virtues of this Medicine in a highly con centrated degree. It possesses many advantag es over Sarsaparilla—its decoction—syrup and sold Extract, and is introduced as a preparation of rnucii easier portability, not liable to injury bv^Tong keeping, and consequently better adapt ed to tiie use of persons travelling or residing abroad. 6 I his extract has proved one of tho most pop ular medicines ever introduced in Philadelphia. It is highly approvod of by tho faculty, and ex tensively employed by our most distinguished physicians. It has already been sent to almost every populated section of tho United States, and whether in town or country, hospital or pri vate practice, it has invariably given to patient and practitioner tho most decided and unequivo cal satisfaction and produced the most salutary and beneficial offects. Numerous letters havo been received from some of the most distinguished physicians in the country and from the Profes sors of several medical colleges, all recommend ing in the highest terms the valuo of this medi cine, and its superiority over other preparations of Sasaparilln. Several cases of secondary sy philis, mercurial and scrophulous diseases, have entirely recovered in the incurable wards of our public insvitulions, which had for many years re sisted every inode of treatment which could be devised. 1 liese cases furnish striking examples of the salutary effects of this medicine, in airest ing some of tho most inveterate diseasos, after the glands were nearly destroyed and tho bones already affected.
