LARGE SERPEN I.—A gentleman of this city, :n the habit of constant communication with the inhabitant* of L’ Assumption and its environs, has t elated to us the following novel circumstan* ce*. which Ke derived from the very proprietor of the laud which was the scene of the occurrence. About ten days ago, a woman, with three of her children, were gathering straw-beniea on the lann of one Vaillant, distant two or three miles from the village above-mentioned. Meeting with little sue i e-s, the children asked their mother’s leave to go . *>y, wncre they thought they might find the fruit in greater quantity. Heave being granted, they entered the wood; but had not been long out of sight before they re-appeared running with all their might and in great affright as if flying from some danger. Being asked what ; had happened, they described, in their own imper fect way, that they had seen some living and tnoir stions thing on a tree. This account excited the mother’s curiosity so strong as to induce her, in spite of a feeling of apprehension, to 1 cturn with them and see what it was. .She accordingly ac companied them, hut what was her dismay when she beheld an enormous serpent curled spirally roun d a tree, its tail resting on the ground, and its head waving above the topmost foliage, as if looking round for, or watching the motions of some intend ed prey. It is not easy to imagine the terror of the little human gtotipe. Scarcely had they strength to retire and tell their neighbors what they had seen. Now Jetin Baptiste, like all of French extrac tion, neither wan's courage nor the spirit of enter prize; accordingly three men set out, one of whom, aimed with a musket, was cautiously to lead the way, steal on, and, if pov-tblc, disable the mouster, alter which the others were to assist in putting an end to him. They entered the grove and looked around, but in vain, nothing was to be seen, and they almost began to suspect that the woman’s imagination had converted (he twisted trunk of a tree &a loiten branch waved in the wind at its top, into « reptile whose existence in Canada was un known. HerolJccting, however, that something similar' had.it was said, occurred near the falls of H'-qu.iro river, they resolved, ns a last resource, that the I musket should be fired, to start it if lurking near ol which, however, they had little expectation. It’ was accordingly discharged, when lo! a tiact of tall grass not fv from them was violently agitated, and writhing through it with, as it seemed to them,, tin; velocity of n race horse, appeared an enormous serpent, whose body, occasionally rising, disclosed j a bulk as large as a water bucket, causing in its flight! a leaf like rustling sound, and leaving behind a ! long wake of waving grass. Hurrying through! tfle tract, it crossed a ploughed held, through! which its passage was only to be traced by a iineal cloud of dast, entered a wood and disan pcarol. 1 After recovering from their surprise, and -onto conjectures concerning its length, it struck them that it might be tolerably ascertained from the height of the tree where it had first been seen.— Having accordingly mcasused it, they found it to be thirty ftet; adding, therefore, to the straight1 Imc of the tree two -fifths, to equal the spiral hne ! of the reptile’s body, the latter may be fairly ©sti- I malt'd at fifty feet—Some time previous to the ^ occurrence, several sheep, seven cows, and a horre i had disappeared, and it was supposed, l>ecome the ’ prey of bears; but, as no remains of even their, hones have been found, it is now considered pro-! bahlc they must have been swallowed entire hr! Ibis serpent, after the manner of the East Indian i Vnutrictor, so well described by Uoffon and i Goldsmith, and more lately in some of the Euro Dean papers. 1 i he first enquiry that presents itself on this sub ject is, whether the account is true; of this we can not doubt, as it is notoriously affirmed by the seven persons whom we have mentioned as having seen the creature, and who can scarcely be supposed to have combined ... the fabrication and propagation of a fietton that could not be suggestetl by «„v ordinary ideas, m.r connected by rustic imagina tions; nor does its singularity afford a very stron presumption against its troth, since almost, every year discovers things of the existence of which the present generation had no idea, not even tradition ally, and the American sea serpent is an appropriate and recent precedent in in- HVOr.
