There are frequent instance-* to be met wi:h in
which calumnies are circulate.! iijurious to the char
acters of individuals, so vague in their terms, or
emanating from sources so polluted, as to evade the
answer which truth might furnish, or to be wholly
undeserving of notice. When these accusations,
however, assume a piccise ami definite shape, or
when, having made an impression on their winds,
they are repealed :»d sanctioned by men whose
general conduct and character entitle them to re
gard, the circumstance should be hailed with joy,
since it furnishes a proper occasion lor a reply._
We have been led to this refleciiun by an article
in a late number ol the Augusta Chronicle, in which,
upon the auth rity of the cdi.oi of the New York
Champion, w ho is represented as an eye-witness of
the circints ce- lie states as facts, the Secretary
ol the Navy is arraigned and condemned for his
treatment of Com. Porter.
Among the most important of these statements,
is the assertion tin; “ Commodore Porter was re
quested, with the courptil of Mr. Adams, by Gen.
Lafayette, to come to the house ol the President,
f<*r the express and avowed purpose of concilia
tion. ” The Champion does not aver that he knew
of thi-* fact, and we speak advisedly when we say
no such invitation was given by Genera] Da Fay
ette, or sanctioned by the President. If, as is pre
sumed, lie alludes to the only personal interview
th»t took place be ween the President and Comm.
Porter, daring the period of Gen. I,.i K.neUe’*
visit to Washington, we unhesitatingly aver that
neither of the E lit or?* of ihit print were present.
At that interview’ were present, the President and
General La Fayette, Commodore porter, Mr. Dj
Pont, and, it is believed, Lieiilcn.fr Skinner, and
no other person. It did not occur in the President’s
Ho’i-e, and Mi. Adams did not retire to the irress
of a window. General La Fayette did not burst
into tear3, or use the language which is attributed
to him.
The facts are he‘C, and the statement was re
peatedly ami sub-tan'inlly made while Commodore
Porter was in this enti;.try, withoui being contra
dicted, as it is believed, !>y him in the minutest par
ticular. Mr. Du Pont, a warm friend of Comm.
Porter, had prevailed on Commodore Porter to
pay a visit to General La Fayette, then residing at
the President’s House. On reaching the door, the
President’s carriage was there, in which he and the
General were about to ride. As Mr. Du Pont as
cended the steps, the President and General came
out. Commodore Porter being in the rear, was not
at first seen, and the Piesideut advanced and shook
hand* with Mr. Du Pont. While thus engaged, the
Commodore advanced, and the President, leaving
Mr. Du Pont, passed the Commodore without
speaking to him, ar d proceeded to his carriage
where he remained, until General La Payette,
perceiving he was waited for, left the gentlemen
on the steps, and proceeded to the carriage, which
lie entered, ar.d it drove off. lie very naturally
inquired of Mr. Adams the cause of the marked
conduct he lia l exhibited to the Commodore, ami
was referred to a letter from Commodore Porter,
whtch had appeared in the National Intelligencer
of that morning, declining an invitation to a public
dinner, which had been offered to him by some of
the citizens of Washington. If the Editor of the
Chronicle will refer to that letter, he will find
abundant reason why Mr. Adams, either in his
private character, the friend of Afr. Monroe, or in
hi- official clnatter as the President of the United
."■bates, should decline to recognise in Commodore
Porter an individual entitled to receive from him
any marks of tourtesy or civility. General La
Payette, Upon perusing the article in question,de
hired tl at all possibility of bringing about a tecoti
ciliatiun between the Administration and Comm.
Pm ter, h.d been removed hy the latter lutn-e f; and
in this opinion, many of the warm personal friend*
of the Commodore expressed their concurrence, at
the time.
We have thus, on our responsibility, given a
statement, varying in many essential particular*
from that quoted by the Chronicle.

On Wednesday evening last, a little before sun
down, thi« neighbourhood was visited with the
most frightful huriicane of wind, hail and rain, that
we have had for many year*. It commenced neat
Gen. Patterson’* mills, and passed in a south east
course, across six plantations, levelling as it went,
every fence that stood in its way. A part of the
roof of one larn is taken off and a number of cabin
buildings totally uncovered. Several corn-fields
are stripped of the blades, and many ol the stalks
broken down, and in some places the green timber
is much torn to piece®. Cut the most appalling
orcuirence took place at the plantation of Mr.
| Johnson. Being engaged in erecting a tread grist
I mill, a large open shed had been made to shelter
I the workmen trom the sun and rain, and covered
i with loose boa-d-, the first gust of wind whirled
j the whole covering away, and carried along with
! i*. Mr. Neal Gunn, one of the milwrights, and
| threw him on his head and face, in the bottom of
I an empty water rom«e, at the distance of 75 feet
i from where he was taken; the tall and bruise on his
| Lead stunned him so much, that he could not rise
and he I a 3 in a state of insensibility, exposed to
the pelting ot the hail until the flood produced by the
rain on the high ground come down ami aroused
turn. James Love, a carpenter, was in the second
story of the mill house, a frame not weaihe.board
ed. i he same blast blew bim and a number of
loose boards out of the house; as he passed (he
corner post of the frame, he attempted to support
liitnselt by it, but not getting a good hold was for
ced out, and came to the ground on his feet, 13
feet ftotn ike house. At that instant a second
blast, with increased fury, met him, and carried him
Hcrc.s-s a piece of low ground, a distance of 100
feet, and art him again on his feet, beside a gieen
tree;around which lie threw his aims and support
ed himself until the wind somewhat abated; he then
let go his hold, and in a moment the wind whirled
around ami took him back about 70 feet, nearly on
a line to the mill-house; and a third time dropped
him oi| his feet, so nearly balanced that he did not
lall off them. In all the dashing from place to
place, wi,h the lury of a whirlwind, he escaped
without receiving any injury. Both of these men
say, they are not conscious of having touched the!
ground, in all the distance they were carried, in
any other way, than the toes of their shoes rubbing
it, once ot twice, as they were borne along by the
wind. Every circumstance confirm® the belief
that they are not mistaken. James Love was
twice taken across a water course, 6 or 0 feet
wide, and 2 or 3 deep; had he been forced by the
wind to stumble along with his feet on the ground,
it is not at ail probable lie could have e-raped beii g
thrown into it, and eeverely bruised. Some doubts
were entertained at first, that Mr. Gunn’s skull
might be fractured, but having regained his senses
so speedily and perfectly, induces the hope, that he
has only received a severe bruise on the head and
face, and that he will be able in a few days, to re
sume h:s business as formerly.
We received on Monday last a 1 ettcr, from a
friend at Ilardinsborg, of which the following is a
copy. No doubt can be entertained, of the recti
tude of the statement made by our correspondent.

TO THE EDITOR.
Hakdi.vsbuhu, Sept. 19, 18CS.
This evening about sun-set, titty-six nsgroe®,
(men, women and children,) destined for the low- j
er country, were marched into our town, from the I
state o! « idiana, a part charged with having mur
dered their owners, and three other white persons,
being the number of whites on board. Before the
court of inquiry, the circumstances developed,
were something like these:—On Sunday, the J7th
m»t. between 10 and 11 o’clock, A. M. a voice
was heard below by those on deck. They imme
diately ran down and found between twelve and
fifteen of their comrades engaged in murdering the
white persons. They soon succeeded in”dis-1
patching four. The fifth jumped overboard, and
reached the shore—was pursued by the negroes, i
caught before he ascended the bank, and was also 1
murdered. They affixed to each a weight suffi
cient to sink him, and threw the wholeoverhoaid.
As soon thereafter as possible, ami taking off such
things (valuable) as were onboard, they landed in
number, sny seventy or seventy-five. The a- I
hove number, (say fifty-six,) embodied them
selves and marched into the interior of the coun
try, some four or five miles; the balance separated
ami as yet have not been heard of. Those taken
were met by a gentleman returning from court at
Borne, who, upon bsing a-ked some nues;ions re
lative to the road, &c. advised them to encamp
at a school house, a short distance from thence —
He immediately left them, and assembled some of
its acquaintances, who pursued and took them af
ter an obstinate fight on the part of one or two of
the blacks. They were confined in the jail at
Rome, until search was made for the balance_
Meeting with no further success, they were brought
across the Ohio, and lodged in jail at this place;
the murder having been committed w«hin the boun
dary of Ureckenridge county. Three of tne ne
groes taken, have been convicted by the ma®is
trates, two of whom confessed the fact. The names
of the individuals murderer! are Howard Stone, of
Bourbon county, Kentucky ; David Cobh, Lex
ington, Ky ; James Gray, residence not known,
but supposed either in Louisville or Natchez ; a
Mr. Davis, of Paris, Ky ; and Edward Stone,
of Bout bon. Messrs. Howard and Edward Stone,
I * e understand, were the owners of the negroes. *

Lckiburo, (Va.) Sept. 12-The following
advertisement has been handed to us by a gen

the authenticity of the facts it contains. We also
learn (hit the horse referred to in the advertise

VILLANY—PERHAPS M URDEtt!
A Horse has been recently found dead at the
bottom of a precipice near the summit of the
^ue, HiJee* * little South of the turnpike in Snic
kers’ (Jap. On examining the top of the cliff
the footsteps ef a horse were distinctly traceable,
lor a considerable distance, shewing at the verge
of the summit, the different positions in which lie
had been placed, and affording incontestible evi
dence that the animal had been piecipitated by
some villain or villains. The landing place being
about seventy yards from the summit, overhung
with huge projecting rock*, against which the an
imal alternately struck in his descent. The first
conjectures to which this discovery gave rise,
were numerous and various: but several days hav
ing elapsed, and no owner appearing, it at length
became, and still is, the general opinion, that the
owner must have been some unfortunate stranger
who hail money, and whose body has been con
cealed by the hand of an assassin: and indeed, when
the circumstances connected with the discovery
are duly examined and weighed, it appears not un
reasonable at least, to fear that this melancholy
conjecture is too well founded. The home is a
bay, with black mane and tail, about 15 hands,
shod all round, supposed to be ten years old, aud
appears to have been a fine gelding.
Editors of papers, it is hoped, will be induced
to give the above an insertion.

Wc utats, on an authority which we know may
be trusted, that it is not true that the Countde
Survilliets has askeJ for permission to reside at or
to visit Brussel*. He is entirely contented with
bis residence in this country, which he continues
to consider the iuo*t happy in the word; an opin
ion, whieii, it may be remembered, he expressed in
his letter of thanks to the inhabitants of New
Jersey, who exerted themselves to extinguish the
fire of his house about six years ago. He speaks,
still, in the same term* of attachment to his friends
and neighbours, and of contentment with his situs -
lion; and is far from desiring to rjuit a country
where in eleven years he has never met with a
painful or unpleasant occurrence.
As to the millions which the editor of the Paris
Quo'.tdienne has so generously bestowed upon him,
it is certainly a very sbsurd exaggeration, con
| trived with no kind intent. The liberality of his
expenditures, fry which the public as well as indi
viduals are benefitfed, and the extent and frequen
cy of his benevolent donations, bespeak considera
ble resources; hut it was truly said, by an old
olTicer who received assistance from iiiin, that
whil* he has the heart of a king, hi* purse is that
of a private gentleman. He has seated himself
among the farmers of New Jersey, where he main
tains a kind and generous hospitality, without any
idle ostentation that could provoke censure from
the most severe. He tnay be found directing his
laborers, who are all attached to him, on his ow n
estate, or in the public road, in ti e improvement
of which he has expended large sums of money. In
the space of 2 or 300 yards he has nearly levelled
two ateep and dangerous hills at the cost of about
$3000; am) we believe that he prefers this plain,
active and useful life to the parade and magnifi
cence which the Quotidienne lias prepared for itim
at Rtuseel*. His public work he considers as some
acknowledgement and return for the protection and
hospitality he has enjoyed in the United States.—

The publication of Recipes for diseases without

rounds of the newspapers, at the instance of my
neighbors, I communicate the intelligence to you,
hoping that no time may be lost in endeavoring to
stop the administering of so deadly a poison : 1
will briefly relate the cases. For some time a poor
rnan, a neighbor named ClementT. Tate, has been
afflicted with (lie ague and fever; he was told of the
lerttedy of Gin St Sulphur, taken just before the
ague —he procured some Gin and Powdered Brim
stone, and administered to himself one pint of the
mixture, and to his daughter, an interesting Girl of
about IS years old, ?> gills, the e.Vect of it wasthis,
it pioduced a most violent fever and delirium in
both of the victims; Mr. Tate is slowly recovering,
but his poor daughter being of a more weakly con
