Ido (■OLD MINES. A letter from *4i intelligent citizen of North Garuhna to another in ti.i, city, under date of Sal isbury, Oct. ti, saj s The extent and value of Hie Gold miltee-are becoming every day more ap parent. Of course some mines are larger than otiicrs. I he one at Lhi-h,dot's has been found to be rich fora quarter of a inije up ihe branch, and on each side f.oin 10 to 20 yards. There are many Spots ot 10, 20 t.i 100 acies on which gold can be j 1 averaging from halt a grain to two grains of gold per bashel of ejith. In most of these pla ces it is not gold but water that is scarce. Gold has been found in the neighborhood of Charlotte ; those mines are rich, but their extent is not yet known. The gold found there is m very line par ticles, embedded in ferruginous cl .y, running in ve.r.a. I his is taken out, made line, then washed down, and the gold amalgamated. Chisholm’* gold mine is situated two miles above the Narrows of the \ adkin liver, on Ileaver dam Creek, almost 1 mile Irom its month. It is on this mine we are erecting our steam engines. If the machinery for working answer 'he purpose, we cannot fail to do a good business. The gold is there—all that we want m order to obtain it, is labor saving machine rJ • I wish you could raise a company in Balti more to work one ol our best mines —I am confi dent you might realize great profits.” SINGULA It CIRCUMSTANCE. It has been remarked that man may not unfre quenily take lessons of doty even from a brute, j Ihe following singular circumstance, which we have from good authority, places the observation in bold Bnd striking relief. Mr. John McCue, of this county, had a number of horses in one of hi* pasture-fields lately, where, owing to the long drought, there was no water; and, for accommodation in this respect, he open ed a communication into a field on the opposite side of his lane, and thence through several fences down to a permanent stream. While turning out the horses one day, as was usual, for the purpose of watering them, it was observed that a horse which had gone blind shortly before, mi.-sed lus way, and strayed a considerable distance up the l.me, while the o'lier horses passed on to the wa ter, and returne I to the place where they had en tered the outer field. Ail old horse, who had been the companion ot the poor blind wanderer, seeing j his prrdicau ent, went to him — conducted him gently down to the water, and back to the place j when; the others were feeding. The whole of the ; horses then moved across the lane into the litld | from whence they came—it being the best pas ture. Who is not struck with this instance of social feeling and attachment in a brute? And what a reproach does it cast on the too common conduct of earth’s proud lord, toward- his fellow-man, un der similar circumstances? Not unfrequently the companion of his youth—the friend, who had shared his substance liberally with him in the days of hi* prosperity—is left, under a change of for tune, when " clouds and darkness come upon him,” to grope his way, silently and alone, thro’ sufferings, while there are none to pity—none to t assuage; with no hope in life, no friend but death. [ St a u/:t o/t Spectator. Colonel M’Kenney, who was associated with Governor Cass, for the purpose of making a treaty with the Indians of the Northwest, has returned to this city, the objects of the mission which was entrusted to these gentlemen by the Secretary of War having been fully accomplished.
