stat a that three men were kdled by the hail
stones on the lowing path ot the Moos ( anai,
near Vontwuile.tr Ham, in Belgium. In the
commune 0 f Qukvretra.n, several custom
house officers were bruised by the hail. Ihe
quantity of windows hroken at Valenciennes
last week by hail storm, was so great that the
inhabitants hn*e been obliged to send for gla
ziers from ail tbe neighboring towns, those at
Valenciennes being quite insufficient.
Thk Can.nom Bali. Tree.—Among the
plants of Guinea, one of the moat curious is
ths cannon ball tree. It grows to the height of
sixty feet, and its flowers are remarkable for
beauty and fragrance, and contradictory qual
ities. lis blossoms ere cf a delicious crinuon,
appearing in lsrge bunches and exhaling &
ri:h perfume. The fruit resembles enormous
cannon b&Us, hence the name. However,
soresa? iohas been so called because of the
toise whtcwthe balls make in bursting. From
the shell domestic utensils are made, and the
contents contain several kinds of acids, besides
sujar sndgum, and furnish 'he materiuls tor
making an excellent d r ink in sickness But,
singular as it may appear, this pulp, when in
a prrfesiiy ripe state, is very filthy, aad the
odsr from it is exceedingly unpleasant.

Unprecedented Railroad Feat.—En
gine No. »o, on the New York and Erie Rail
road, recently hnuled one hundred and ninety,
twu coui cars from Binghampton to Ovvego,
each ciirand loud •■veighinx eight tons, besides
four cars heavily freighted with bridge limber.
This, we presume, is the Waviest load ever
drawn by one engine, beirg with the four
loads of limber, about two thousand tons—
rrore than enough to load the new ateuuier
Queen ot the West, which is ihe largest nit r
cnant steamer now afloat on this continent. —

collision was caused by gross carelessness in

Brevet Capt. Elms K.. Kane, of the United
States Army, died ai Belleville, Illinois, on the
9th instant, in the 31#t yeur ol his age. He
graduated at West Point in 1841, and since
then has been attached to the Army.
