A correspondent of the Charleston Courier, under dale "Havana, July I3ih," giy e » ( h e fol lowing account of the recent accident at a race there, and the race that afterwards look place: The only incident of interest I hare to chronicle, ia a misfortune, or rather an acci dent, that happened yesterday afternoon, at a horse race, by which a host of persons ha»e been seriously injured. The race took place in the Campo Miletar. Happening to he near the plice, I was induced by soma friends to take a stroll around it. The crowd was great, composed of all colors and ail conditions.— Inside there were several stands built up with seats, to the height cf twenty feet, one of which feil just befjre the commencement ct the race. A friend who waa within six feet of the spot where the accident happened, de scribes the scene as The structure was very slightly built, and through a rush of persons to take possession of seats, who had no right to do so, it was crowded to excess, upwards of a thousand persons being collected upon this single atand which was meant for but two hundred; and as most of the occu pants were of a disorderly description, the movement caused by their fightiug and pulling one another, increased the insecurity of their position. My witness observed the build ing swaying to and fro, and expected a catas trophe. Upon the entrance of the Captain- General'the whole mass arose the better to see him, anu by a tide movement in taking their seats again, their weight bore upon a weak place, and, in the twinUling of an eye, the whole fabric fell down, like a house built of cards. A thousand persons were precipitat ed, one upon anoiher. In a short time, those who able came crawling out from the ruia. Some torn by the spikes which held the the planks together, whilst others were dread fully hurt by the splinters of the broken tim ber. All were more or ies3 hurl; but numbers laid where they fell, unable to move. These, to the number of seventeen, were carried to a neighboring hou ;e; others were taken to their own residences, and oiheis hobbled off us best they could. After this, the race—ifit can be called nne with propriety—went on, amidst the screaming and shouting, of as Mackguaid a set as I ever cast eyes upon. I'here was his Excellency, seated with his friends and aid de camps, and all round bita, the geutry I have men ioned, and some two hundred soldiers tinder arms. I never have seen so strange a sight on a race ground. Lancers, to a con siderable number, prancing and galloping about; soldiers, in squads, here and there; end the police, to tlie number of fifty or sixty; and, notwithstanding this formidable host of peace preservers, I never, in any concourse, have seen so little order. But, you are a happy people, who have not to live amongst the Spaniards, to understand their mode of arrang ing affairs in general. DisTßEsst.Na Accident.—We regret to learn that F«a.scis Steger, a young man of Cum berland county, was accidentally killed oa the 14th inst. He went out hunting on that day and not returning home, his Iriends- became alarmed and the next d»y searched the' woods for him without success. Although the search was continued he was not discovered until Monday last, four days after he left home.— His lifeless body was found in the fork of a tree. It is supposed that he fell in endeavor ing to ascend tho tree after a squirrel he had shot, and was killed by the fall, lodging in his downward course in the fork. Hir head was much bruised. His two faithful dogs wera found under the tree, where they had remained from the time of the untimely death of their master. The Storm at Charlottesville.—The storm of Tuesday, which was not so severe here tor the wind that blew as elsewhere ; but whxh was remarkable for the amount of thun der and lightning that attended it, and the co pious showers that fell, was not only very se vere in some sections, but very destructive.— We learn from the Charlottesville that the rain in that town and vicinity was at tended with terrific thunder and lightning, and a severe wind, which prostrated the growing corn, toie up trees, and levelled fences with the ground. The streets were so flooded with rain, that boats might have iloateJ through them; ond during a portion of the time hail fell as large as robin's eggs. A tree was struck at Midway, and a house near the depot of the Central Railroad was struck and set on ti/e ; but the rain extinguished the fire. The storm fortunately was brief in its duration, only last ing about 15 minutes. At Erie, Pa., on Tuesday, an immense meeting was held, and resolutions were passed condemnatory of the proposed change of gauge of the Erie and Northeast Railroads. Great excitement prevailed. Tha meeting unani mously requested the City Council to paps an ordinance directing proper officers to remove tbe track from the streets in case a change of gau,;e should be attempted. The ordinance waa passed the same day. There is likely to be much trouble before the qaeslion is settled. We hope that our differences or. a similar point, as regards the different links of railway, from this place Westward, may be settled in a more peaceable manner.
