THE DAILY DISPATCH. TUESDAY MORNINO, NOVEMBER S9. IIM YORK RIVER RAILROAD A friend has put in onrhands a copy of the Richmond Enquirer of July 19th, which- in advocating this road, takes occasion to com bat the common prejudice, that cities to great, must stand upon the sea shore. ° explode this fallacy, the examples are nun tioned of Rome, Babylon, Memphis, IVkin, Calcutta, liondon, Liverpool. i tor Haven, the finest harbor ot ritain, is studded only with shipping p<' *"■ P ow j Edinburgh, Paris. Amsterdam, Bremen, and in fact all Uie great cities of the Eastern Hemisphere, which are all inland. In our own country. Baltimore > s two hundred mile from the sea ami New Orleans more than a hundred. The instances quoted by the Lnquut. . numerous enough to disprove the fallacy that cities, to be great, must be situated on the g ea shore. But in endorsing this opinion, we must not be understood as changing the views held by us, when advocating the \ ork River Railroad Wt winter. We were then and are still of opinion that the navigsu'OU of the jJftmes is <?f the greatest importance to the commercial Interests of Richmond, and is ca_ pable, if proper improvements are made, of making Richmond one oi the first commer cial cities of the Union. Whilst others have anticipated vast benefits to Richmond from the greater facility of communication which the York River Railroad will afford between Richmond and other ports, we regard as one of its chief advantages the development ot the resources of that section ot Nirginiaon the York, Pamnnkey and Mattaponi, a sec tion whose inexhaustible supply of marl keep* up perpetual fertility and whose extensive and varied productions would, by the \ork River Railroad, be brought to the Richmond market. We have seen nothing to change the opinion, so often expressed, that Rich mond should not abandon the noble river which lies at her doors, but, on the contrary, should bend all her energies to deepening the channel, removing the bars, and thus ren dering efficient this fine outlet, provided by Nature, for the vast trade which will be brought here by her canal and by the four railroads which converge at this point. The York River Railroad will not interfere with this natural avenue of commerce and trade. It will accommodate a portion ot Virginia which has been heretofore neglected by the State, notwithstanding its own liberal contri butions to the treasury, and whose trade, if secured to Richmond, will add greatly to the wealth and prosperity of this city. Some statistics of interest, which sustain the view of the subject we have taken, are unavoida bly deferred till a future number. THE OYSTER TRADE A New Haven correspondent of the New York Jouryial of Commerce, gives some inter esting facts connected with the oyster trade. He says that, contrary to the prevailing no tion, a comparatively small proportion of the oysters for which that region has considera ble reputation, are natives there, but are brought from Chesapeake Bay, in immense quantities, in the Spring, when they are planted, to betaken up in the fall. "The op eration of planting," says the writer, ''is after this fashion: The oyster vessels, upon their arrival from the South, are anchored near the site of the proposed beds, and their car goes are removed by small boats which come along side. The beds are formed by staking off the ground into small lots, or squares, each of which is spread over with about fifty bush els, so laid that one shall not be on another. By fall, the oysters have considerably in creased in size, and greatly improved in flavor If allowed to remain too long in the ' the oyster, not being acclimated to northern winters, periehes with cold ; and if planted too thick, they smother each other. Without regard to mutual rights, each one encroaches upon the peculiar domain of his neighbor gradually enlarging his residence in whatever direction pleasure may dictate. In this way, when oysters remain long undisturbed, the increase of numbers involves the destruction of multitudes. Their means of communicating with the outer world, is closed upon them ba ttle cementing properties of the newly-formed shell, and the unfortunate victim is consigned to starvation." This adapted Southern oyster, says the Journal's correspondent, is sent off in every direction, to all p:irts of the country. "Tliev are first opened and put in keg*, or cans, which are afterwards packed in boxes con taining ice, of a capacity equal to from twelve to twenty gallons each. The enormous extent of this trade may be inferred, when it is known that from 150 to 200 vessels, mostly schooners, are employed in conveying oys ters to New Haven, —the cargoes consL-ting of from 2,000 to 6,000 bushels. The profits, too, have been highly remunerative, where ordinary sagacity has been exercised; one firm having cleared during the last four years, $75,000 or $100,000. 'Failure'in the oyster ii scarcely ever known. The business is chiefly engrossed by about twenty firms, the largest of whom send off from l.oao to l,.">oo gallons of oysters per day. The firm of Levi, Kowe & Co., who have one of the largest es tablishments, with branch houses in Buffalo. Cleveland, Detroit, Hamilton, C. W., &c., es timate that their business this season, will amount to 150,000 gallons. No less than twenty vessels we employed by them ; tml from seventy five to one hundred individuals, mostly girls ai d boys, find constant employ ment in taking oysters from the shell, during six months in the year. These girls often acquire a wonderful dexterity in their depart msnt, the several movements required in go ing through the process being performed with all the regularity and precision observed in touching the key* of a piano forte. If set to music, however, the ear would be grated with a succession of sounds much like t}iis~"*click, —gouge,—splash! Click,—gouge,—splash ! he. The t'rst indicates the use of the ham mer in removing the edges of the shell; the second, the iaetrtion of the knife ; the third, the final deposition of the disemboweled ani mal in a tub, prior t*) packing. Ihe hammer is thrown down each time it is used, bui the knife is always retained in the hand. These 'openers' receive as compel)sat.on two cents a quart, and some of them earn f 3 per day, though #1 is mora commonly earned. As there are about 150 oysters to the gallon, the individual wfro opens 100 quarts, or 25 gal lens per day, necewarlly opens three thousand seven hundred and fifty oysters during that time." " 4 THANKSGIVING DAY. I According to the N. Y. Journal of Com ! merce, Thursday last was observed as a day of Thanksgiving by all the New England States —but Maine, which observed a pre vious day, and Vermont, which is to observe Thursday, Dec. —all the middle States, nil the Western States, and Maryland. North Carolina. Alabama, Georgia and Florida, of the Southern States. The seven States that, bo far as we learn, have no day appointed to observe, are Virginia, South Carolina, Mis sissippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and California. We have no doubt that in time, the custom will spread and become universal. Wo trust it may, if it shall prove more than a mere formality. Certainly no people ever had more reason for gratitude to the Giver of eve ry good and perfect gift. It is difficult for Americans to appreciate the blessings they enjoy iu the universal plenty \vhi,ch prevails in this country, the entire exemption from want, the freedom, both civil aud religious, which is vvery man s birthright. Th<? yon Celebration of a Day of Thanksgiving Is 110 proof of indifference or ingratitude among those States in which it is not observed. The grand festival of the South is Ch iustmas. and we hope it will always be retained at the head of the calendar, and never be thrown into the shade by any festival of modern in vention. We do not suppose, because Christ mas is not generally observed at the North, that its people are insensible to the grand event which that day commemorates, and it would be equally unjust to impute to Southern States a want of religious gratitude from the fact that they do not formally and periodical ly celebrate a day of Thanksgiving. We should like to see that day celebrated, for it is right in itself and we need a few more fes tivals, but never may the crown fall from the brow of Christmas, the benign and joyous old King of the Holidays. Ljr°lt will be seen by reference to our ad vertising columns, that 11. W. Shekfkt, Esq., offers for sale some of the most valua ble property in Staunton. It is said to be a rare offer to capitalists.
