T«Tg_rvAILY DISPATCH. "MiilXMir _____ -TOLERATION. Thte iB a principle which U in every body's month Wo never tire of admiring ourselves and the ag« ** live in. on account of it# Hba ral and tobraut spirit. When wo think of Urmcr day* and former moil, when we think cf the rack, the fire, tho gibbet, we can scarce ly credit the fact that this is the same world, that we are of the same race We stand in imagination in the dungoons and the aiupdhe atre where the esrly Christians were rent by by beast* scarcely less savage than their per secutors ; or wo beheld them ascending, froun the stake, in a chariot of fire to the skies; or, il a later age we tind tho (yhurch itself, learn mgno wisdom from its own bitter experience, picking from the earth tho weapons of perse cution which had fallen from its own breast, and with unnatural hate, using them against ber own children We dance our eyes in mingled amazement ai*d horror, over tho ♦eclewaytical and civil Liwtory of the past, in which Romans, Greeks and Protestants, in iihe uame of tho Gospel, o! Peace and Korgivem*?, consigned each other's bodies to the flames for the goodof their souls ; in which cavalier anil rouodhead settled points of polemics at the point of the sword, and Pa rituns flying to anew continent for conscience sake, signalu' ' heir accession to power, by burring witch and hanging quakers, in which Whigs and Tories hunted each other to the death, and howled like sav age wolves ever the Wood that trickled from tho block. That was no doubt an uncomfortable age to live in, cud we do well to bo thankful that we were born in an era of greater humanity and toleration. But, after all, the nr.turc of man is uncbang- j ed, and even in this libera! ago and country, j we have by no means arrived at the highest pitch of toleration and charity. We are tree to think as wo please in politicß and re ligion, and we are equally free to denounce and abuse all who differ from us in opinion. There are few men who do not avail them selves of both privileges to the extent ol" their capacity. Mankind are just as narrow, sclf oplniated, unwilling to make allowances for the errors and faults of each other as they ever were. They are not only certain of their own infallibility of opinion, but they do not believe that other men are as sincere in their convictions as themselves. It is true, they may not use the thumb-screw or the rack to give potency to their arguments, but there ig one weapon which thoy may use, and which is capable of more mischief than all the en gines of the inquisition. This is the tongue, a thing which is described in Holy Writ as an "unruly evil, full of deadly poison, set on lire of Hell." The bodycannntbe harmed in these times, but the reputation of the best man living can be burned to death, on a slow fire. Political opponents can no longer send each other to prison or the scaffold, but be hold how they butcher each other's charac ter in the public prints. It is almost impos sible in these days, famous for charity and toleration, for the public to form a cor rect opinion of the talents and character of any leading public man. Many a sensitive and high minded statesmen would prefertoeuf fer from the most infernal machine of physi cal torture rather than to have his goad name crushed beneath the massive weight vf the press. j We wish it could be said with truth that there is more toleration in the religions than ttie political world. Sectarian hostility is of- quite as deep, if not as noisy, as political strife. Strange that men cannot make allow ances for difference of education, habits, tatses, and of intellectual and moral organi sation ! It is clear that ail parties in politics and theology cannot be right; but it is equal- 1 ly evident that all are sincere, and therefore , entitled to the forbearance and toleration oi all. ! SUICIDE. It is stated that more suicides occur ia > T i<?w i England, than in all tho rest of th e p p j| e j States. We know not how ¥ec J ncik tb > 8 statement with the »^ cowled . ed shrewdness and good t0 Bay nothing of the good of brother Jonathan. waß a very curious work once writ- Yen on "The Anatomy of Suicide," by P. Wins Vow, an Englishman. We presume it was written in dismal weather, though the title pag e does not eay so. It contains some interesting and- curious facts. In stances ar-5 given of suicide among the Greeks and Romans, and extracts from their laws upon the same subject. Under most circum stances* they stigmatized it as Infamous. In some parts of the Roman empire, the magis trate had the power of granting, or refusing permission to commit suicide. The laws of Thebes deprived the suicide of funeral rites. In Athens, his hand was cut off from the body aad buried apart from tt. The law said, "the hand was a traitorto the body." Plato, how ever, urged persons conscious of crimeg, •which society had no adequate means of pun ishing, to relieve mankind of their presence by suicide. But this did not express the gen tral sentiment of antiquity. Its feelings were more correctly represented by Virgil, who regards suicides as fools or effeminate. lie thus speaks of them in the diffuse but spirited translation of Dryden. "The next in place and puniehmsnt are iney Who prodigally throw their live* away; Koole, who repining at their wretched state, And loathing auxioun lite, suborn their iaU»; With late repentance now they would retrieve The bodies they forsook, and with to live, Their pains and poverty desire to bear, To view the light ol heaver, and breathe the vital air. But late forbid*, the Stygian floods oppow; And wtth nine circling t&rcams the captive souls iackne," Napoleon often expressed himself strongly against suicides. "If Marcus," said he, "had slain himnolf in the marshes of Minturntr, he never would have stood the seventh time for consul " On another occasion he said, •'What claim can that man have to courage, who trembles at the frowns of fortune?" A grenadier having shot himself for love, and another following the example, Napoleon, fearing the folly should become contagious, issued this order of th*. day: "The grenadier Grablin ha? committed sui cide from a disappointment in love; ho w.m, In other respects, a worthy man. This is tho; second event of the kind that has happened in this corps within a month. The first con sol directs that it'shxll be notified in the order of the day of the guard, that a sohiier ought to know how to of brooms the grief and niu laotJbftiy of his passion*, that thurc L> aa much .m trueoonragein boating ment*lafflifltk»n>«i*- fatty, M in remaining unmoved under the fire of a battery. To abaodcm wWf to grief, without resulting, and to kill oorself in order to csoapo from it, in like abandoning the field Bewleree." Tho order had tho desired effect, and the apprehended epidemic was stayed. Wo wish we had room for some of the many extraordinary cases recorded by Window. They would tnliven our reader* in dull wea ther. We can only find room for the follow ing: "The case ot a man is recorded in a French paper, who burnt with ono of tho strongest nations of which we ever heard an account- Ilia mistress having proved unfaithful to him, ho willed upoa his servant, informed him that it was his intention to kill himself, and re quested that, after his death, bo would make a candle of his fat, and carry it, lighted, to his mistress, lie then wrote a letter, in which bo told her that as he had long burnt for her, she might now see that his flames were real; •or the candle by which she read thfl HOtfi, was composed of p<vrt of his miserable body. Aftor this he committed suicide." Here was a more sensible fellow, an Eng lishman, who wished to get up a subscrip tion: "An Englishman advertised extensively, that he would, on a c-ertain day, put himself to death Ln Covert Garden, for tbo benefit of his wife and family. Tickets of admission a guinea each." Bo mucfi for suicide. Americans, generally, are too smart to indulge in such nonsense.— Political suicide is the only self murder which is common in this country, and even that is always involuntary. SPIRIT OK TilE PKEBS. The city papers yesterday contained but little beside? the President's Message. The has a oommnuieatioo upon the netea' sity of determining the precise route lor the Coving, ton and Ohio Railroad, aad reocommende that by way of the Jack me and Greenbrier rivers. The Mail, in announcing the election of Lynn Boyd as Speaker of the Ilouse at Washington, says he has never distinguished himself in any way ex. cept by hie blind and rabid partisanship, and notes with pleasure the fact that Messrs. Cankie and Powell did not Tote for him. Speakiug of Mr Forney, H says there are some reminiscences Of hie pact career that would not exactly bear icspec. tion, but don't know that he is any the worse Clerk, in conclusion the Me.il says the Administration has thus for everything its own way; but whether it will " hold its own" all the way through Congress, like the effect of Santa Anna's admission into Mexi. co by President Polk," remains to be seen." The Enquirer briefly comment* on the Presi. dent's Mew-age. Wftextract a portion ofits com plimentary remarks: But, far above any mere excellence of rhetoric, will the country prize and applaud the patriotic sen timent and cound doctrines of this incomparable paper. Since Madison left the Executive Mansion, there has beon no such President's Message given to the country. TBe old State Rights School have now a representative and a champion in the Federal Executive, and President Pierce speaks the lan guage familiar to the Virginia Democracy since Jefferson and Madkon first vindicated the rights of the sovereign States. The Enquirtr has also an article on " The Com promise and the Baltimore Platform," showing tha 1 the assertion that the Baltimore Convention pro* nouncedjudgmentonthc Compromise measures is a misrepresentation of fact. The Bulletin notice; the cheif points in the Presi dent's Message. It also calls attention to the condi tion of our State currency, as urred by Gov. John son, and trusts that the Legislature will at an early day adopt the suggoetiou, and make one more effort at least to relieve the sHate of iw shinplorter cur. rcacy.
