The Whig also has also something to say about Nebraska. "Some doubts are thrown out, whether or not the Administration will support a bill which does not recognize the Wilmot Proviso us opera tive in that territory. If not, and a schism ensues between them and their best friends, [the Free soilers, according to the Whig.] the consequence'' must bo disastrous." The Whig introduces the f .Mowing extract from the Washington correspon dence of the Petersburg Democrat : "'Alien the bill comes up for action, you may look ou' lor old-lashioued wincing and cavorting. Saturday, Jan. 7. A message was received from the Senate, anr:oun cing the passage of sundry bills already noticed in their proceedings, which were appropriately re ferred. The Speaker laid before the House a communi cation from the Secretary of the Beard of Public Works, in answer to a resolution of the House, sta ting that there have been expended of the sum ap propriated to the Covington and Ohio Railroad »8~,000, and that in the uext fiscal year there can be judiciously expended, in addition to the appropria tion already made, S-'.OOO, 00. The communication was ordered to bo printed. Mr. Maxloky presented the petition of the Ex change Bank of Norfolk for a re-charter, which,on his motion, was ordered to be printed. The Speaker announced the following commit tee on the part of the House to examine the books and affairs of the Bank of the Old Dominion, viz : Me-srs. Garuett, Skinner, and Campbell. The engrossed bill to amend ttie chartcr of the Dora Coal and Iron Mining Company, being the un finished business of yesterday, was again debated. Mr. Patrick withdrew his motion for recommit ting the bill, and Mr. Bukord renewed it. The House decided to recommit the bill. Da motion of Mr. Smith of Kanawha, the House took up a bill to amend the 16th section of an act incorporating a company to establish a turnpike road ironi the city of Richmond to Williamson's Ta virn. [This Turnpike Company, which owns the Brook Turnpike, ha- been deprived of its toll* for some mi nths. Their charter provides the mode of ascer taining when the road is out of order, but prescribes no mode Ly which it may be ascertained when it is in order. It declares that when the road is found to be out of order, the gates shall be thrown open and no tolls shall be received upon it until it is put in or der; but as there is no provision to determine when it is in order, there is no authority to close the gates bnd demand tolls. The road was declared out of or der la-t summer, and the company ask now for an amendment in their charter to give them the power to charge tolls whea their road rUall be in order; and this bill gives them that power.] Mr. Mavo moved the indefinite postponement of the bill, which motion was sustained by him and op posed by Messrs. Smtth of Kanawha, and Ei.lyson. Messrs. Mavo and Ellyson both referred to the history of the proceedings in the county of Henrico " ith reaard to the road, deducing opposite conclu sions as to the justice of the case. Mr. Mavo con tended that all had been fair and just, and that the power of charging tolls ought not to be granted to the company, which he contended had forfeited its charter. Mr. Eli-vson deui< d that the charter had been forfeited, and argued that the plainest princi ples of justice demanded that the Legislature should re-instate the company in its authority to demand tolls and control its property. Before the question was taken, on motion of Mr. Staples of Patrick, the House adjourned. A Jolli old "Bkick."—Cymon, of the Boston Post, tells a etory of a staunch old pillar of the church, in New York, who having imbibed too free ly during his new year's calls, was r jeling home wurd in; happy as a harlequin, singing snatches of Bnehanalian verse, occasionally dolling his .antique "tile," and huzzaing in the most patriotic manner, when he met one of his brother churchmen, who expressed bis surprise at such an exhibition; upon which the jolly old "brick" replied: "You see—hie—brother, the fact is, that 1 have worshipped the Lord, faithfully aud true, for the last titty—hie—years ; so 1 thought that I would now— hie—take a day to myself!" Bad News fob Turkmen.—A late number of the Mobile Register contains the following: Sallie Waters, the pride of her owners, the boast of her breeders, the dependence of the State, and thefvictroM of every contest save the last, was seized with lock-jaw' on Wednesday. She is a sad loss to Ler owners. She cost an immense sum iu Kentucky last year, aud was considered a tramp card for the ''Stare game," to played next March on the "Metairie." Kossuth at Constantinople—According to the following from the New York Times, Kowsuth is, probably before this, at Constantinople: We iearn uroui private sources, entitled to credit, that Gov. Sad Accident.—On Friday evening last a young lady named Miss Martha Wilson, an em ployee in the Manchester Cotton Factory, met with a serious accident while returning homo from her day'* jabor. Having reached the North abutment of Msyo's bridge, and being anxious to get to her resi dence on Byrd street, between tith and 7th streets, she determined to take a near cut, and for that pur pose climbcd the small fence that divides the Richmond and Danville Railroad lot from j4th street. The reader will remember that the South line of this lot is divided from the river by n high and heavy atone wall, which finds iu Kastern ter ruination at the abutmeut ot Mayo'* bridge. In climbiog the fence her object was to pass along this wall and thence by IJaxxU's mill homeward, but as she stepped upon it she aiaggered, lost her bal ance, and instantly therealter was precipitated to its base below, a distance ot about tweuty-fivefeet, crushing her left ankle so badly that it protruded through the skin, and otherwise bruising and inju ring herself so severely, that it is leared she will not recover. As soon as possible alter the acci dent, the unfortunate young lady was conveyed home, and Drs. Brown and Bolton immediately sent lor, who promptly attended her, and did all they could to relieve her sufferings. When w.~ beard fromher on Saturday she was then suffering severely. Of course the poor creaturo hus no one to blame but herself lor her rni-ifortune, and we trust it may prove a warning to others who have been in the habit of making tbi-* wall n to do so no more. The wonder to us 1?, that falling Irom such a height she was not inuautly killed. Between I and 2 o'clock Saturday, a consultation of physicians was held, when an operation was de termined upon, and shortly alter, Dr. Johnson, as sure i by lira. Brown and Wilson, proceeded to am putate the broken limb just abovetbe ankle. Yes terday afternoon, on enquiry, we were glad to learn that the pati'iut was doing as well as could be expected. Miss Wilson is about 14 years of age, and bad just obtained employment iu the Cotton factory. Being dependenton her own exer tions for a livelihood, we trust the benevolent la dies of our city will see that she ueeds uotiiing that can add to her comfort. Valuable Invention—Commission merchants and others who occupy tall houses, and olten find it necesnary to remove beavv and lijht goods from the basement to the fourtb'or ti'tb sto ry above, will do doubt be cratified to learn that Mr. I*. L. Hates, of Baltimore, ha-* succeeded in inventing a Ught, cheap and handsome Hoisting Mackinc, by which one man can easily perform as much work as two can by the old method. This machine is erected upon scientific principles, and alter having beon thoroughly tested, is said to stir pats every thing of its kind yet discovered in this country. Attached to the wheel is a chcck, by which it can be stopped at pleasure, adding great ly to its convenience iu case of an accident. But. i s greatest recommendation, iu our opinion, is the amount of labor saved by its use, which, of itself, must be it high recommendation to merchants and others, when laborers Hre commanding such ex orbitant prices as at present. Already we find that two ot our enterprising business firms have availed themselves of the advantages afforded by this new invention, and many others will do so as soon as they see its operations in the large eatab luhruentsof Mr. E. Il.Skinkeron Karl street, and the Messrs. Crenshaw, on the basin. By referring to our advertising columns the reader will find the notice ot Mr. Bates, who is prepared to supply our business men with his new and improved Hoisting Machine, at short notice ansi on moderate terms. iheOOr v—Norma.—The performance of Norma on Fiilay night, was certainly a very brilliant and triumphant achievement. Madame I>k Vries excelled all her past efforts he.e. Her Norma was indeed a superb performance. She acted the character with great spirit and fidelity. Sijnor Arnoldi performed Polliane with decided credit to himself; and Coli.etti's Ornvtsso was admirably done. Signora as Adclgi sa, performed with accuracy and propriety, fiie is a remarkably unassumiug and rather timid ac tress. Her timidity affects her voice—producing occasionally, a tremulousness, which in some pas'- sages adds to its patboe; but is iu the general a draw back, doing injustice to her powers. Her tones are svvee: aud correct, and with a little more boldness would have a greatly increased effect.— Her personation of the part allotted to her Friday night, won tor her the good feeling of the house. We were mistaken übout I'ozzolini appearing in Norma. He took no part in the Opera. The cho rus was very fine and the Orchestra rendered the delicious music of the piece with marked skill aud sweetness There wag a full house to wi-ne-s La Somnabul* Saturday night, and the entertainment was very fine. Madame DeVries in Amina elicited general applause, and l'ozzolini was himself again, per forming Elvino admirably. Arditi and his orches tra delighted the audience with their superior ex ec atioQ of the brilliant music of the opera, and elici ted rapturous applause by their performance of Jullien's lumous Prima Donna waltz. Hard Joke.—Michael Ivunkles paid Eli zabeth Murray a visit lust Friday, and wheu about leaving, helped himself to a flannel shirt aud a pocket handkerchief, that did not belong to him, regardle.-a of the remonstrances to the contrary ol his lair friend. To tiy the feelinsrs of the good natured dame, Mike paid no attention to her calls, but once out of her sight, he stepped into the wood cellar of the same house, and raising up a log of wood, deposited the wearing apparel under ir, and then made his exit. Supposing that Mike intended to retaiu possession ol the goods, Mrs. Murray ap plied for a warrant, which was placed in the hands of the Watchmen, who took him inte custody, re covered the shirt and handkerchief, aud brought him before the Mayor the next morning, when "he was examined, admonished and then discharged. Olk Bill.—Next Tuesday evening the admirers, in our eily, of the great Norwegian vio linist, are to have au opportunity of attending a grand concert, to be given by himself and popular assistants—Strakoscb on the piano, and that musi cal prodigy, little Adelina Patti, whose sweet, en chanting notes so enraptured her hearers when she was last here. The reputation of Ole Bull is too unbounded, and the anxiety everywhere too k'reatto hear him, to admit of a doubt that the bouse will be filled when hi' concert takes place.— We therefore invite attention to his advertisement iu another column, aud say to our readers, 6ecure your seats at once. Montgomery Guard Ball.—This much talked of affair will take place to-nijht at the Union Hotel, and we have every reason to believe that (hose who attend will be highly delighted with the genera) arrangements made tor the occasion. The Commit tee to whom were entrusted the necessary prepara tions, have spared neither labor nor money to give entire satisfaction, and to render the celebration a fitting one for the grand event in the history of our country which it is intended to commemorate. The Hth of January cannot be passed lightly over by a people whose second independence from British tyranny was gained on that eventful day. The bat tle of New Orleans was a grand period for our citi zen soldiery, whose bravery there defeated the ve terans of England, and it is proper, therefore, that our Volunteers should annually recur to it as a proud moment in the history of American freemen, and it is no less right that our citizens should join in the merriment and rejoicing, for to it we owe in a mea ♦itro the happiness and independence we now enjoy. From the character of the management, and the .Teat care taken to exclude improper persons, there is very little doubt that the Company at the Union Hotel to-night., will be composed of our best citizens, and the evening prove one of pleasure and enjoy ment to all who participate in the entertainment.— If you have not obtained a ticket yet, but desire to do so, you had better call at an early hour this morning and supply yourself, as but a limited number are to be sol], and they may run out before night Not Dose With—Juines Atkinson was before the Mayor i»»t Satordny, to am*wit to the rlmrge made itraiwt him of stealing $5 trout James Jones on tho 30th ult.; but ax Jones refused to ap pear, the examination was postponed until Wednes day m \t, and a wurrai.t issued ageinet Junes to briu? him into Court. The Mayor has no idea oi' permitting men to swear awnv the character of ■jtbeßK, by making chnrpi! that Uit y cannot sustain; iinA havtni: made their black mark, by imputation, then shrinking out of it by keeping from Court, and thereby preTcntinj the accused from proving his iotioconoe. Dismissed.—A summons against James Smith for leaving • lo»d ut wood to the street at night, *u examined and diaminend, on the ground t °* t th« defendant and his family were sick, and that he conld get no one to put it away. Postpoiied.—The examination of tlie ne gro boy Daniel charged with shooting and maim own6d by Mr. Davis, will not take place until Friday next, when the physicians of the wounned negro think he will be sufficiently reco vered to appear in court and testify. Dr. Bolton states that Mr. Davis' man hat lost one eye by the shot, and that several shot have been taken out of iiia face. The Italian Opera Troupe will give another entertainment to-night at the Theatre.— Thus f ar they have been greeted hy crowded houses, and their music has b<»en mos: rapturously ap plauded. The bill for this evening is a very ricti one, and will no doubt draw out tho ''fashionables" I by the hundreds. Funeral Procession.—Liberal Grove, No. 2, U. A. O. The Richmond Sacred Music Society will meet this evening at half-past 7 o'clock, at the u'.ual place. Snow fell ia our city last Saturday night to the depth of two inches. Olb Bull's Colony.—As mauy articlei and cotr munications have found place in the Eastern papers and been copied extensively in ths West in relation to Ole Bull's connection with the colony in Panr syivatiia, reflecting much discredit upon that gentle man, vse furniih our readers with the following let ter from Ola Bull's attorney, extracted from the N. Y Herald of the 21st u!t.: Jumci Gordon Hennett, Esq, rear Sir:—Having observed ia t vour paper of lha lsth icst., a letter h udeci ''Oio Boll's Colony in Pennsylvania." I deem it iny duty, as the counsel of Mr. Bull, {he being ab sent from the city,) to correct the impression which the pubiic wouiu leceivo from thai letter, almost every parngraph of which is without 'oundatiou. It seems the ostensible author of this production is one a medical man, wiio emigrated from some place at ihe westof this colony, and has been, since iiisi arrival, living, rent irep, in a bouso of Mr. Bun's, and otherwise most plentifully partaking of his bounty. While pretending to be a warm frieod of O'.e Bull and the Norwegians, he has secretly avowed that he would have alt the Norwegians routed aud settle the colony with Uerinan*—to which race he bc.'ongs. He endeavored to obtain the situation of ovajseer, iu which he failed. His whole career since his arrival at the colonj has been characterized with duplicity and imbecility, never having accomplished anything except to bring a man with him to the colouy, who has turned out to be of the stamp with himself. It is so evident that this letter emanated from and was written to curry favor with certa:n parties who were connected with the late association, that jus tice demands that 1 should give a full history of JVlr. Bull's unfortunate connection with it. In the summer of 1852, John K. Cowan, of Wil liamsport, Joseph T. Bailey, of Philadelphia, and olliers, procured for themselves au introduction to Olu Bull, and through the agency of a person who was then hia attorney, persuaded him to a project which he had nearly complettd, of pur chasing lands in Virginia, and to enter iuio an asso ciation with them to found a colony on lands in Pot ter county, of which they were the owners. Fif teen hundred dollars were exacted from Mr 801 l to pay the expenses of a trip for the whole party up to view the lands Afarmor, who lived in tne vicinity, was solicited by a person connected with the atfair— but whose uame, fortlie present, I withhold—to rep resent to Mr. Bull, as he passed through there, that the lands were worth au acre, und increasing in value. Mr. Cowao, who headed the party. {alsely repre sented to Air. Bull, aud also to Mr. Dudley, a well known merchant of this city, who ha* escaped />nly with a less ot $3,000, that certain lauds, and the only level or cleared spot in thr whole trnct of twenty thousand acres, belonged to him and hia as sociates. and thus induced Air. Bull to consent to found the colony there. A large sum of money to expended by »«lr. Bull in procuring and forwarding emigrants: aud, finally, a meeting was held in Phila delphia, (Mr. Bull not being preseut,) at which Cowan was appointed sole superintendent, and man ager, Bailey treasurer, Mr. Bull president. Teu thousand dollars were obtained from Mr. Bull by Cowan, without giving him any equivalent, not so much as a receipt. Bailey, through Cowan and another, got from him twenty-live thousand dollars more, for which it is now alleged that they were to give Mr. Ball deeds to certain portions of the land ; but uot the scratch of a pen was given to Mr. Bull tc show it. Cowan, some ten months after he had received the money, wns reluctantly induced to give a deed for about ten thousand acres, out of wtiich he covertly excepted all the trace that induced Mr. Bull to tauks the purchase. This decepticn wai not diacoveied until after I was retained as his counsel, and went personally to the lands to examine the validity ol the titiea, &.C., when l ascertained that Bailey and Cowan did no:, and never bad, owned a foot of this tract —all ol which belonged to Mr. (ieerge Hteward ■ >n, of Philadelphia, of whom they bad made seve ral ineflectual attempts to purchase it. Under this deception, Mr Bull .lad expended from his owu pri vate purse, $Jo,(feil, iu putting up buildings and sat isfying ihe demands of aetileis, who complained to hiui that Cowuu did not pay them fur their work. Bailey held on to the #£5,000, and still Mr. Bull hod never been able to get u deed, or rhe slightest equiva lent; and when lie wrote to have the money returned, or else a deed, received as his only satisfaction the answer, "that he was a foreigner, and could not hold lands." Mr. Bailey, I knew, bus the reputation of a a shrewd artificer in gold and the bnse metals; but the fact that he did not discover that Old Bull, the Nnr weg a> , wai not a native bora Yankee, till alter he had get his money, does not sjieak much for his his torical learning. in July last 1 was employed as Mr. Bull's counsel, and finding matters in this curious state, 1 adv.sed him to abandon the whole concern, and demand t return of his money . After nearly hree month's time spent in collecting evidence in Potter t/y and elsewhere, and in frequent met ting Jot the counsel for the respective parties, a comproinUe win effected, by which Mr. Bull return ed the deed to Cowan, and received back his $1U,04X) in the shape of a bond, payable in six, twelve, eigh teen and twentf-fi>ur months, and be retired from the association with a loss, as he asserts andean show, of nearly $40,000. By that settlement, Ole 801 l was to pay • certain schedule of the debts of the association every dol lar of which has been paid as fast as the parties could be communicated with; Bailey, Cowan, ice., assumed to pay the balance of the debts, and have not done so; and it is the con-payment of tfceae debts aione that has citased all the suffering at the oolooy, and subjected Mr. Bull to the abuse of some of h:< colonists. The base attempt to throw the blame of the mis management of the colony upon O«o Bali is in keep ing with the rest of the Hibtnue. Cowaa was the »u --penotendeat, and Bailey, at hia own urgent ao'icita lion, was treasurer of thr association that founded tlifi colony ; and on theli beads alone wilt tall the odium, and <o them alone can be j-i»tly attributed any bad re pute or mltfnintiiement of the colony. Mr. Bull being wholly uriacijuuinttii with the price ot the laud, wua induced by tnese parties to take it a' $1 and $i 40 per acre, when it wan welt known la Philadelphia that for years theownoraof belter land* In the immediate vicinity have only rallied thetn at from twenty-lire t©se*enty-ftve cuts. Thla kn>gkt of the pill box osieir» in b's letter tbat he knnwt that Mr. Bull luat no money in b!a connec tion with the coiony j that he teaold the land for double the amount he paid for it. and that nothii p hut • friendly transaction took piaea between Mr. Bull and the land owu-rt.
