SPIRIT OF THE PRESS Yesterday's Enquirer has an article on the Soule duels, Irom which we quote the following relative to the conduct of Mr. Soule, senior: "It was an insult to a woman and that woman his wile, which lie had to avenge. The charac'er and rank of him who offered the affront aggravated the wrong. That Mr. Soule di<l right in rcseutins: the outrage, every man of proper feeling will admit that he bore himself with signal dignity Rnd cork age throughout the affair, i* the testimouy of those even who mani'es: the least friendship tor him. — lie has maintained his personal dignity without compromising hi 9 position—hehaseiven the Inso lent aristocracy of Europe a touch of American chivalry—and for that the country will thank him. The Mail advocates the union of the Hampden Sydney College and the University Medical School. Should this be done, "we should have a medical in-, stitution ol which Virginia and the whole South might be proud, and which would be a source of considerable revenue to any State.'' The Whig and Penny Pout continue the remarks upon the gauge question. VIRGINIA. Arrest. —We learn from the Norfolk Courier that one of the stewards of the steamer North Ca rolina has been arrested on a charge of conniving with slaves to aid them in running eff to the North. It appears that a slave applied to a iortune teller to conjure for his succcess in escaping. The fortune teller informed the Mayor the slave was arrested, and certain confessions made by him led to the arrest of the steward aforesaid. In order to preserve a relic of We aged woman, some curious person took the toe-nailfrom her right loot, and sent it to the Petersburg Express—the editor whereof thinks it could be n;ade available for open* in} oysters. It is about two inches in length, of a spiral shape, and two inches in circumference at the base. Acgcsta Cocntt.—Wecopy the following items from the Staunton Spectator. It is stated that Capt. L. L. On last Thursday, this place was visited by a vio lent storm of wind and ram, accompanied by thun der and lightning. About one 1500 feet of the tin roof of the Institution tor the Deal and Dumb and the Blind were blown off. Mr. George Heiser. a stage driver io the em-, ploy of Messrs. The partiea were Mr. Blackbvkk, a cadet of Uie V. M. 1., and Mr. CHaiSTtA*, a law student, the former having been must foully murdered. The letter says: "Forthe last twenty-four hours (dated 18th in*l.,l this village has been in tfuch a state of as I have never before witnessed. About half part 6 o'clock yesterday (Sunday) evening, young Mr Blackburn, a cadet ot the V. M. Institute, was killed by Mr. Christian, a law student The cause of this sad affair was this : Mr. Christian had beeu in the habit of visiting a young lady of Fincastle, (now in this village,) a cousin of Mr. Blackburn, ami B. hav ing heard or known something derogatory to the chaiaeterot C. told his courin of it and urged her to walk with trim to church no more. On the 3th inst. Christian sent word to the young lady that he would call at her uncle's that evenfag, to escort her to church, when she declined the favor of his com pany. Suspecting something wrong, Christian de manded an explanation, which the young lady gave hiin.' Last Saturday morning Mr. Black burn paid his cousin a vi-it at her uncle's, when she told him that she had given Christian her reasons for declining to keep his company. Learning this, Mr. B. proceed ed t-J town, at once, sought out Christian, told him frankly and candidly that he had warned his cou sin against him. and that be felt justified in sodoing from the character that C. sustained. No outbreak took place then, though the two parted with any other than good feelings. Christian remarking that he would see Blackburn again. On the same day Christian bought a pistol and bowte knife, and was heard to make threats against Blackbdrn several times. Sunday morning whilp Christain was in the ta vern yard of the McDowell hotel, he had theknile in his hand and told old Mr. Dall, the (stage driver, that h* intended to use it that night. At half past 1 o'clock, P. M., of the same day Christian stationed bimsell in tront of the church and threatened to attack Blackburn as he came out, but was restrain ed from so doing by Mr. A. Moore, or the murder would probably have been committed in the pre sence of the dispersing congregation. At this time nothing was known ot Christian's intentions, except by a few, who never dreamed of such a re sult, la the evening the church bell rung, and the peo ple were crowding into the houseoi Ood. Dr. Jun kin was to preach, and came with hi? family, his daughter being escorted by young Blackburn, in the very hey-day of ycuthlul hilari y. As Klick burn passed into the vestibule, Chri-stain tapped hiin on the shoulder, and said he wanted to speak with him. Blackburn turned about, and the two walked off together. Two cadets were standing by and saw this. One of them, knowing of the pre vious difficulty. remarked to the other ''let us 10l low them —tbry will have a fight." "No," replied theother —"there hno fear—C. has only a stick and B. will be a full match for him." They pa?sed out of the gate by themselves, turned the corner and walked up as far as the hay scales. It then partially dark, the moon was not up and day light was nearly gone. James W. Masibie, who was on his way to church, saw the ssav the two fall and rushed forward. Christian, on per ceiving him, Jumped up and ran off as rapidly as possible. Massie finding that Blackburn could not get up, and hearing a gurgling sound in Lis thrt at, called tor help. As soou as aid could bo obtained poor Pdnckburn was taken to Wm. VVhhe's, where ne Soon breathed his last, never having spoken a word. When a light was procured, i*. was found that B. had received a large gash in the left side of his throat, an Such and a half below theear. Four physicians were in attendance in two or three min utes, but they only arrived in tuue to see one gasp and B. was dead. In less than ten minutes from the time Blackburn left the church with Christian, be was a corpse. Dr. Junkin hud ascended the pidpit and opened the service, and lew of the congregation, therefore, knew of the murder till the close of the sermon. As many cadets had entered the church, one after ano ther, heard it and left, causing a great deal ot confu-. eion. The congregation knew that something had happened, but most persons kept their seats. ' Christian, finding that he had probably killed Blackburn, ran down to the tavern in jg-eat haste and took to his room. lie was pursued by a man, and finding that he was known, gave himself «p, but uof until he had changed his clothes. He now says that he committed the deed in self-defence, Ijut no body believes it, as he was armed with a stick, a pis tol and a bowie knife, while poor Blackburn had no weapon about hiin. As soon as the murder was made known, the ca dets became greatly excited, and threats were qtade of Lynch law, and so great was the crowd in frunt ofthe tavern, that the officers had to take Christian out of the back way and by an unfrequented street to the jajl, where a strong guard was stationed all nip lit. A Coroner's Jury ot Inquest have been sitting all day, and are not halt through the testimony. On examining Blackburn's body to-day, it was fonnd that he was cut in the head above the right ear, and stabbed very badly in the shoulder. The wpund in the neck was So deep that the weapon had passed clear through the neck and struck the jaw bone on the opposite side. His clothes were also vary much cut. Christian threw the knife and stick away, when near Mr. White's store. I believe the pistol has not been found, although it is certain that he purchased Mr. Pettigrew on the day before the murder. Ifhehad it with bimhedidnot use it. The knite and slick when found were both very bloody. A large quantity of blood was found in the street near the h*y scales. It looked to*he full as much as if a Urge hog had been killed. Crowds of persons have hfeu going to the place all day to see it. Blackburn could not have survived more than three minutes after receiving the stab in the neck. So bad is the state of feeling between the Cadets and the Law students, that 1 greatly fear more blood-bed. iChristian, I understand, is in a dreadful state of mind, and some think there is danger of iiis com mitting suicide. The town has been in a ferment all day about the murder, aud people have thought aid talked ot nothing else. Christian is from Am herst county, where he has a widowed mother aud two Sisters Blackburn was from Charlestown, Jffferioo county, llis father is a very respectable mau and an elder in the Presbyterian Church of that place. An express started to Charlestown last night with the dreadful tidings, and another may have goneto Amherst, for all that I know. I have been thus particular, that you might be upprised of aH the lacts as far as 1 Lave been able to gather them." Mas. Pakti.s!oto.n's Caiu>et Bag of Fc.v." We have received from Geo. M. West, Bookseller, a new publication with the above tide. It contains more funny things than we could enumerate in a column of the Ditpitch, besides one haudred and tilty engravings to which the comic almanac bears 1 tin comparison. A good laugh is better fur diges tion than any thing else we can prescribe, and this book will certainly produce that. Although it is uot an otfspi ing of the Mrs. Partington who has bo long been before the public, we are sure she need not be ashamed to own it. I f the weather or any other cause has given you the blues, go dowu to West's, procure a copy of this amusing publication and, our word for it, you'll feci at peace with all the world aud—everybody else. Risk in Gcano.—We learn from the Baltimore Patriot that Messrs. Barreda <fc Bro., Peruvian agents, have been instructed to raise the price of guano from $46,20 to $50,'J0 per ton. This is owing Co the increase ol freights and the difficulty of pro curing vessels to supply the increasing demand lor the article. . It is not onr purpose to find fault wihi the Prpent police or charge them with care lessness and neglect. Were they the meat vigilant men in the world (and some of them have no supe riors) it would be morally impossible for them to detect incendiaries or burglars when they are com pelled to traverse beats a mile r.r more in length in the performance of their duties. Evil disposed T^ r . eons, to effect their ends, have only to mark the time o! their passing a given point, and then they can commit their crimes and make their escape, with certainty. As proof of this we refer to the burning of the two stables on Wednesday night within three hundred yards of each other, and the escnpe of the iucencharioß. Fires are becoming so frequent in our midst that something should be done promptly to prevent them, and to this end the police should not oniy have numbers but means to ferret out the incendiaries and brirg them to justice. This can and should be done, if it were necessary to place guards within one hundred yards of each other throughout the city, and we, therefor*-, hope that: the City Council will consider the subject at once and act upon it in a becoming manner. Murderer Examined.—Daniel, slave to Jihn N. Toacker. charged with shooting Albert Thomas, slave to William Davis of Henrico, on the Ist inst, from the effects of which he died on the 15th inst., w;as examined before the Mayor yesterday. William Davis sworn. I know nothing »f the shooting save what was told me. on the night of the Ist inst. He is dead. He died on .Sunday night last. 1 bad a conversation on the night he was shot. Mrs. Catherine Houston sworn. Albert came into my house on new year's night and asked for some thing to eat. I gave him something and he sat down at the table. Shortly after Duniel came in and asked for a cup of coffee. 1 gave it to him. find he sat down to the table, where Albert and himself sat and talked for a while, Daniel amusing Albert by relating the fun he enjoyed during his late trip to the country! After they had finished, both of them took seat* by the fire, and commenced a conversation. I paid but little attention to what passed, as I was busy at the time beating hu eg:>. Daniel pulled out a pistol and Albert took it to examine. Heard liimtell Daniel he ought not to carry such a weapon. Albert then gave Daniel a pi.itol, and they continued their conversa tion. Shortly after I felt the powder burn my face, and my eyes were dimmed by the flash'and"Yh«; smoke. An soon as I could see, I observed Albert with hi? face resting in his hands, crying «*oh me, oh me." Did not hear him say who shot him. Daniel then got up and left the room. They both frequent ly came to my house to get something to eat. Dr. James Bolton was called to see thewourded man. Found several punctures in his face which were much swolen. Probed some of the wen oris and extracted shot. Several shot had entered the eye—one passed through the ball and another through the lid, but did not touch the brain. Symp toms were favorable for several days, until ersyp ela« set in, which produced death. The disease was the result of the wounds. Robert Custello, a negro, heard the screams of Albert, and saw Daniel when he came out of Mrs Houston's door. Went in—found Albert with hi# lace resting iu his hands—said he was shot, and asked me to carry him, which I did. The Mayor then remanded the prisoner for trial at the February term of the Hustings Court, and recognized the witnesses to appear at that time to testi'y iu behalf of the Commonwealth. Not at Fallt.—Joe Anderson, the black white washer, whose reputation hasnotbeen at all Improved by an extensive acquaintance with the police, was set to the criminal bar in the Mayor's Court yesterday, for assaulting and beating a color ed associate named Samuel Clayton, on the 16'h inst. Sam represented himself to be a non-resis tant, and as amiable in disposition as a youn ff sheep. He had merely asked Joe to settle the baf ance between them, when Joe in the moei barba rous manner, knocked him out as stiff as a crutch, fo* merely clsiming what was his own. A disinter ested witness, who was present at the assault, gave a very different version of the affair, proving con clusjlvelv that the complainant had been imbibing too freely at the time of the circumstance, and that the prisoner had to knock him over to get rid of him. The Mayor, on learning these facts, dismissed the warrant, and the prisoner went on his way re joicing. Theatric.—Notwithstanding the incle mency of the weather, which prevented the atten dance of many who would otherwise have been present, the beautiful play of " Lady of Lyons" was brought out last night in the most unexception able manner, giving infinitedelight to a discrimina ting audience. Miss Logan's Pauline was a charm ing piece of acting, and {be ohly regret was that it wtw not witnessed by every ope who admires this great production ol Bnlwer. We hope it will be re peated. on some more favorable night. The tragedy »f " Fazio" will be presented this evening, Miss Logan sustaining the splendid char acterof Bianco, supported by Boaisice, Griffiths, and the strength of the company. The amu-ing comedy of the " Honeymoon " will close the even ing's entertainment. With Miss Logan ns Juliannq and Taylor as the Dukr, our citizens may expect something first-rate. Remember, the performance to-night is for the benefit of Miss Logan, the bare announcement of which should be sufficient to fill the house. Robbing a Her Roost.—Philip, a negro boy in the service of Reuben Lacy, was convicted before the Mayor of breaking into Mr, Alex. Ster ling's hen house last Wednesday morning, and stealing therefrom twelve chickens, and ordered twenty stripes. George, a smaller boy, and ser vant to Charles Davis, says that Philip waked him that morning, when the fire bells were ringing, told him what he was going to do, got him to go to the place with him, and then made him stand ou the outside and keep watch, while he (Phil.) climbed the fence, broke the lock to thenen house door, bagged the fowls, and came out. George was cnuiht that morning by the Watchmen and punished. Law Over.—Alexander Jackson, one of th» very worst free negroes known to the Police of Richmoud, appearead before the Mayor to answer the charge ofassaultiug Joseph Arnold, a white man souie weeks since.
