THE DAILY DISPATCH. ■Bumm MmMw. rusktiAiu i n«.~ THE WRECKER. Aoouttmuona Toward* the close of the *ixteenth century, a horrid evattwA prevailed on the coast of Cornwall, of hiring voxel* to their destruction in storstv weather by fastening a lantern to a hone'* head, ted leading it about on the cliff*, in order that the bewildered mariner, mbtakinr it for the light of a i wii l might be Induced to anape hi* course to ward* k. Thi* atrocious expedient waa often auc ceasful. The devoted crew dreamed not of their dancer entil warned of R, too late, by the foaming breaker* that burst upon them from the shore; and the veeaet apeedtty became the prey of a net of ruth laat barbarian*, who, to secure themselves impuni ty in their plunder, often murdered tlio*e who es caped drowning, and then called their booty a "god-tend.** In a •mall hovel, on the craggy *hore of a deep and dangerous bay on die coast of Cornwall, dwelt one of tb >«e wretches, an old hardened des perado. who united in bimaelf the fisherman, the smuggler, and the wrecker, but the last waa hi* favorite occupation; and such wa* the confidence ofhlscompir.|.>n* in hi* experience in thi* capaci ty, that fce u h« usually appointed their leader, and rarely fallal in his office. Hi* wife, too, eticour aaed him, and i«ot unfrequently aided him in his Iniquitous exploit*. Disgusted with the wicked ness of bU parent*, their >nlv son left his home in early life, and sought to obtain an honorable sub sistence a* the mate of a West India trader. It wa* at a period wbpn a loot; and profitless rammer and autumn had nearly passed away, that Terloggan, like the vulture, ever watchful for his prey, wa* more than usually observant ot thesfcna of the heaven*; nor was any one more capable than bimaell of discovering the most distant in dtcationa of a tempest. Nature bad for several month* worn a placid and most encouraging as pect. The soft and azure sky seemed to re«t upon the transparent sea, and the slowly-expanding waves swept with slow murmuring* along the •hiuing sands of the de'p bay with a wild and mo notonou* pitching, that seemed to strike like the voice of a prophecy upon the ear. Not more hateful were the glorious beams of the orb of day to the fallen Lucifer, aa described by our great poet, than waathe quUcent state of nature to the dark mind of Terloggan. Inhislmpatiencehecur*edthepro tracted *ea*on of tranquility, and hailed the ap proaching period of storms as more congenial not only to the "gloomy temper ol bis *oul," but to bis interests. At length he saw, with a smile ot savage •arlsf action, the sun sink in angry red beneath die dim and cloudy horizon ; heard with secret exultation the hollow murmuring of the winds ; and beheld the blackening waves rising into fury, and lashing the lofty rock* with their ascending •pray. A* the night advanced in chaotic darkness, the horrors of the tempest increased; and the loud and long blasts of the contending elements rune out upon the ear like the death-knell of a departed oiil. "Now'* thy time," ejaculated the old hag, his wife, "go thy way out upon the clitft; there's death in the wind." Terloggan speedily equipped himself, and aaeended the steep promontory at the entrance of the bay. The usual expedient was resorted to, and he soon observed a light at sea as if in answer to his •ignal. Hi* prey *eemed already in his grasp. The light evidently approached nearer; aud, before an hour had elapsed, the white, close-reefed sails of the vessel could be dimly discovered through the dnrk ness, and the appalling cry of the seamen at the discovery of their danger distinctly heard. Signal en* of distress were immediately fired, and the id command*, all hands on board, and about ship, were vociferated in wild despair. Every exertion wa* made to wear the vessel from the shore; but the redeeming moment was past, the ship was com pletely embayed, and neither strength nor skill were of any avail in averting her impending fate.— In a few minutes a tremendous crash, and a heart rending but fruitless cry for" help, announced the horrid catastrophe; and the last Hashing signal gun revealed for a moment a scene too terrible to be described. The stranded vessel, hurled repeat edly against the jagged rocks of the bay. soon parted; the wave* dashed over her shattered huil with relentless fury, bearing to the shore the scatter ed cargo, broken pieces of the wreck, and the tat tered rigging; whilst the mingled shrieks ot the drowning, blended with the roar of the conflicting , elements, rose upon the ear like the despairiug erie* of an anny ot dying Titans. There was one, however, in whose eyes such a acene wa* joyous, in whose ears such sounds were melody; ana that being was Terloggan. lie wait ed impatiently until the storm hail s me what abut ed; and when silence began to indicate that the work of death was well nign over, he descended the well-known cliffs to dart upon his prey. Un moved by the horrid spectacle, (for the moon bad broken trom the clouds by which she bad before been concealed,) he stood awhile gazing upon the scene of desolation around him, at a loss where tratta begin his work of rapine. But, to his sur prise and momentary dismay, there was yet one living soul on board, who, should be survive, would interpose between him and his hard-earned booty, and who was even now loudly supplicating his as sistance. To despatch this unhappy creature in hi* exhausted and helpless condition, was a resolu tion no sooner formed than executed. Whilst he wa* appearing to aid hia escape from the jaws ol death, one stroke of hi* hanger laid him a livid and mntilated-:or*e upon the sands before him.— Terloggan then rifled the pockets of his victim, took a ring from his finger, and, laden with the most portable articles of his plunder, retraced his foot step* to his hut. " What luck I" exclaimed his fiend-like help mate, as he crossed the tbreshhold ot the door. " Never better," rejoined Terloegan, pointing to his booty. He then described the success ot his hellish stratagem, without even concealing the par ticulars of the murder ; alter which he displayed •ome nieces ot foreign gold coin, and the ring which ne bad taken from the finger ot the stranger. "Giveme the light, Meg," said the hoary villian. The hag obeyed. 'But no sooner had he examined the ring, than be recognized its form and certain mark upon it. His countenance changed, and wi h a groan of agony he quickly handed it to his wife.— She knew too well trom whose hand it must have been taken, and, after glancing at it for a moment, yelled out with supernatural energy: "Oh my son, my poor eon I" ana fell senseless at the feet ot her husband. Terloggan endeavored to master#is toll ing* until the fact could be ascertained. He arose wtththedawn, mid hastened to the spot where he had left the murdered corpse, It was inded his son. The strode ot retribution had been complete Overwhelmed I y despair and stung by remorse, to which hi* heart nad ever belore been impervious, he determined on self-destruction. A lew days afterward* hi* mangled body was tuund among the rock*, and interred on the spot where he had per petrated bis last deed ot blood. The chief incidents of hi* laat terrible story are narrated in the neigh borhood * hich was the scene ot its hero's manifold atrocities. His wretched wife perished a few weeks afterwards by the fall ot ber hut, occasioned by one of those dreadful storms which she and her savage helpmate had so frequently invoked.
