THE DAILY DISPATCH FRIDAY MORNING, JULY tl, IW. [Correspondence of the Di«pa»ih | Whit* Sclphvs Srairro*, J Sunday, July lfltk, 1«M J /bear Dinpatck ■— Having a leisure hour, and not being able to leave aay room in consequence of having a aort o( gout, (not eauaed, however, by the high living which we get here.) 1 have concluded to inflict an eplatle on you. Well, I arrived here aeveral day* ago, aeveral hour* behind time, with no nights' reataa promtaed by the "Central" in "the bill* of the day," but feel amply compensated for the fatigues of my trip, in the agreeable ex change I have made from the hot and crowded streets of our goodly city, where the cry of "cho lera" wa» continually ringing in my ear*, to the healthieet place in the mountain*. The weather here 1* delightful, and every night tuffioiently cold for the use of blankets. The day» are liner, the air more bracing, and the tempera ture more agreeable than our finest Hp ring day* — Tbie i« emphatically " the place " of the mountain*. 1 wi*h not to disparage other deservedly popular watering place*, but this is the " Leviathan " which ' takes them all." The long row*of pleasant looking, neat building* (Generally of one *tory,) the tasty single cottages, the gigantic tree* of primeval growth, with their refreshing shade of green mountain foliage, the nicely kept gravel walks, leading to all parts of the grounds, the whole encompassed by mountain*, ••overed by the richest verdure, making it the most •""autiful valley in the world, forms a " tout ensem ble," a Bijou, a Paradise, which must be seen to be appreciated, and which I have not sutlicient elo quence to describe. It is now the Sabbath ; no sound of imiric or rev elry la hesrd ; the gey throng, which ususlly etroll through the promenades, are probably in their cot tages enjoying their '• siesta " There is to-day no attraction to bring them out: The pistol gallery, the ten-pin alley, the brilliant saloon—all are closed A drowsy *tilln««s seems to pervade the place, and •are the occasional rattle of a stage coach, which is bringing an accession to onr numbers, all i* silent; a striking contrast to the life and gaietv of other days in the we«*k. Yesterday there was M arrivals, which makes the list of visitors " foot up " nearly 400; and I should not be surprised if we were lull before the Ist of August. Whether the opinions of " A Physician," in regard to the health ot our city, has anything to do with this influx, I am unable to »»y. S. Correspondence of the Dispatch. EPISCOPAL CHURCH ON FIRE. Fredericksburg, July 19. Thi* morning, between 3 and I o'clock, our in' habitants were startled by an alarm of fire. It proceeded from the basement of the Episcopal church, and hut for the exertion* of a few citizens, that elegant building would have been totally de stroyed. As it is, the organ, town clock and furni" ture of the church are completely ruined. No doubt exists that thi* tire was the work of an incen diary. This, I believe;, it the only incorporated town in Virginia which has not a regularly organized fire company , and this M a matter of more surprise, •ince there are in Fredericksburg three of tha beat engines in the State. The hoie, it is true, are in a very bad condition; but I would advise the young men to begin at once, and let us have a regular or ganization. The Council would, no doubt, furnish a complete set of hose. Let us begin at once.— What say you, young men ; Yours, B. Correspondence of the Dispatch. RAD CASK OK INSANITY.—THK MrBDKB e ASK IN IIKNBY. Danvillk, July 18. I regret to inform you that Mr. Oliver E. Poindcx ter, who lived in your cily for some time with Messrs. Christian & Latbrop, was committed tojail yesterday for safe keeping, under an attack of in sanity. His friends will send him to the Asylum iri Staunton in a short time. He is Yery much be loved in this county. A negro man belonging to a Mr. Jones, of Patrick county, was tried at the July term of the Court o f Henry county, for the murder ol a man named Bar row and condemned to be hanged. Hknhy. PROM CHINA. Amoy and Fith Caau —The Zephyr brings news from Amoy of the decapitation of sixty Rebels captured by the three West coast junks in the im perial service, lately seized on suspicion of piracy by 11. M sloop Bittern. In revenge lor the slaugh ter of their comrades, the Rebels threatened an attack ou the city on the iMith April, and vowed, should it prove successful, to sacrifice every Impo lialist who might fall into their hands. The head of one of the principal Rebel chiefs, raptuied with eighty of his men near Suatau a fortnight after the city was retaken in November last, is, we are told, in the possession of Dr Bland. Between the teeth is a large brick, which had been driven in with such violence as to have fractured the lower jaw. Routic of the Rebels in the North.—The in* telligence about the rebels in Pehih le (the metro politan province) is not of later date, but fuller in it* details, than was given in our Overland of the 22d April. These details serve to show that the discomfiture has been complete, and, according to the Pekin Gazette, between six and aeven thousand rebels have been killed, while some bad submitted and joined ths Imperialists, by whom they were well "received ; and in order, we presume, to induce others to "repent and renovate themselves," six ol those who first surrendered, have had white buttons conferred upon them. rHE Triumph ok a Travelling Mesmerist in a Difficult*.—The author of "Sam Slick," ob serves in the course ol a work he has just publish ed, that the trials to which travelling Mesmeritt are put to in America, are, at times, humiliating and painful enough, albeit they afford infinite sport to the unbelievers. One poor fellow on arriving at h town in Michigan to lecture, was surrounded by several citizens who told him there was a rheu matic patient up stairs, who must be cured, or he himself would be escorted out of town, an'ride of a rail, with the accompanying ceremonies We had better give the rest of the story rs it wa? re lated by the diaciple of Mksmer himself: •' 'I'petars 1 wont with em, mad as thunder I tell you ; tirat at being thought a humbug, and next that my individual share of the American Eaale should be compelled into a measure by thunder I'd gin them a fight, if it hadn't been for the «cience which would asutiered any how, so I jest said to myself, let 'em bring on their rheumatiz ' I felt as if 1 could a mesmerized a horse, and I d termlned whateper the caae might be, I'd make it squeal by thunder! n * •Herehew, said they, and in we all bundled into a room, gathering round a bed, with me shut in among'em and the cussed big onenlightened hea then that did the talking, drawing out an almighty bowie knile at the same time.
