But these were nre occasions. Tbey had been married a year ; and! on the morning ol their wedding anniversary, the tnsband looked askance at her neat and comely pajaon with some shade of remorse as he observed— " "Mary, we'n had ao hoi day tin' we were wed ; and only that I haven't a (Sony 1' th'world, we'd take a jaunt to th' village to nee thee mother." INSTRUCTORS. In the outset of an Institate of this cbaraeter, lay ing claim to pablle confidence, without having had opportunity to earn a reputation, it seems proper that ttae 1 rus ees should give distinct information regard ing the teachers, into whose charge parents are in vited to commit their daughters. Rev. BASIL MANLT, Ja , President of the Insti tute, Is extensively known as the Pastor for four Jeers past, of the Fir»t Baptist Church in this city.— te is a Master of Aits of the Univ. of Alabama; a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, and has had much familiarity with the operations of the higher institutions of learning in oar country. Bis undivided energies wilt be given to the Institute, and his attention will be directed not merely to the classes which he may himself instruct, but slso to the progress of every scholar, in every department of instruction from the highest to the lowest. Mr. R P. Latham, of Culpeper county, a Master of Arts of the University of Vtrginle, resigned the chair of Mathematics, As., in the Colombian College, to accept the Professorship of Ancient Languages and Physical Sciences in this Institate. He brings to his new position the experience of several years of previous occupation as teacher, and the warm recom mendation of those with whom be has been associ ated. The ample and beautiful set of apparatus, which baa been procured, will lend him unusual fa cilities for instruction. It is not surpessed, we pre sume, for practical purposes ef illustration by the apparatus o any college in the State- Mrs. Emma Holcombe, of the celebrated Institute of Mr. Bacon, at La Grange, Ga., and previously en gaged as a teacher for a number of years in Louisi ana, will take charge of the higher English branches. Miss Elizabeth V. Nelson of Norfolk, Va, was engaged for some time as assistant of Miss Robinson, in her weil known school in that city. Her atten tion will also be devoted to the English branches. Miss Jane C. Stanabd has established a reputa tion in this city by the school foi voung ladies, un der her own management, which needs ne com ment She will give instruction in English studies. Mademoisrlle Mina Chollet, a niece of Prof. Arnold Guvot of Harvard College, has enjoyed such a position, both in French and American circles, as to give her unusual advantages. She will instrnct in French and German; and, as she will reside in the Institute, every opportunity for acquiring an accu rate pronunciation and ready ase of the French lan guage will he afforded to the boarders. The system of instruction will be practical, designed to lead the pupils, even in the earliest stages ef study, to use the language readily, and so, to learn French somewhat as a French child would learn it. SI. Joseph Michard, a well known Instructor in Modern Languages, of this city, will give lessons In Spanish and Italian. Mr. John Dunderdale, Organist of St. Paul's and Musical Instructor in Mr. Hoge's scheol for some years, has been selected to take charge of the Musi cal Department, and his long residence here, and eminent success, preclude any necessity for remarks. He will be assisted by his daughter, Miss Emily Dunderdale. She baa just concluded a course of musical training under the celebrated Madame Se guin, by whom she is highly commended as compe tent to reflect honor both upon herself and her teacher. Misa Sallie Sully enjoys the deserved reputation of being an excellent performer and instructor on the Harp, and will give lessons on that instrument. Other musical teachers will be provided if neces sity; or if parents prefer any other Professors of Mo- in the city, their services can be ob- Mrs. Emily Grcbb, formerly of Richmond, and re. cently of the Valley Union Seminary, Botetourt Springs, Va, wilt give instruction in Drawing, Paint ing, Ornamental Needle Work, kc. Her skill in these branches, and her energy as a teacher, are am ply attested. Mrs. Geoßgianna Monroe, of Winchester, Va., has been selected as Matron. She has filled this im portant position with great success in other schools, such as Miss English's, Georgetown, and Mr. Baker's at Winchester. In fine, the purpose expressed In the outset of this enterprise has been steaaily kept in view—to have none bat the very best teachers connected with the Institute: and no pains nor expense has been spared, tbit seemed necessary to attain this object. And, as the design was to obtain the bnt teachers that could be met with, from whatever quarter they might come, it is a gratifying fact that so many of these are from the South. DEPARTMENT B OF INSTRUCTION. The coarie of study is extemive and liberal. It ia de ■iined to afford to y vung ladies opportunities for men tal training corresponding to those which youug men enjoy in our best colleges: only inch modifications being introduced as the different, though not less re sponsible sphere which a well educated woman mast occupy, sesmsto demand. In the Preparatory Department, the usual English studies will be pursued 11 is proposed that the more advanced classes of this 1) epartment may take the initiatory steps in learning French. This will give them a great advantage when they come to the mere scientific study of the language. In the CotU'jiate Department, which contemplates a four years' eourse, the higher English branohes will be prosecuted, together with the Sciences and Ancient or Modern Languages. To those who have successfully completed this course—including at least one other language. Ancient or Modern, besides Eng lish—a Diploma will be given, at the Annual Com mencement. In the Ornamental Department, Vocal Music will be taught to the whole school, aa a part of the regular c iurse, and without any extra charge. It is relied upon as a valuable coadjutoriin promoting cheerful ness, good order and health. Instruction will be given on the Organ, Harp, Pia no and Guitar; in Solo and Quartette Singing; and in Drawing, Painting, Ornamental Needlework, Itc. BOARDERS IN THE INSTITUTE. The young ladies who board in the Institute will be regarded as members of the family of the Presi dent, and will be expected to conform to such re strictions and rules as seem required by this principle. It is deemed unnecessary, therefore, to prescribe any detailed code of regulations in regard to thecondnct of the boarders. They will be simply required to act at young hi diet. Those who make the earliett application have choice of room*. Though they are all furnished slike, there may still be some preference between them. Young ladies (or their parents for them) are desired to choose their room-mates, but where no aeleotion is made, the President will assign them. TERMS PER SESSION OF NINE MONTH*.
