THE DAILY DISPATCH iATuiPAT Moamwo. octobkk i, i«h. NonroLK Conv*irrioii.—The Bouth Bide JDrmocrat, in an artiole on this convention, ex presses the hope that the Covington and Ohio Railroad will be emphatically endorsed, with Jivt feet gemge and none other. It regards the New River route aa a discordant element, but, would say to its friends, bnild the road yon have already a three-fifths appropria tion, —go to work and rouse among those who expect from it such a brilliant future, anoth er fifth, Ac., "and leave Petersburg and Nor folk to elaborate the other, and in our (the De mocrat's) opinion, much more important route." Although not included in this arrangement, we trust Richmond may be permitted, as hav ingsome slight interestin this Commonwealth, and being called on to bear the principal bur then of the taxation that may be imposed for the route which is to be 'elaborated' at Nor folk, to have some voice la that operation.— We therefore again invoke our citizens to assemble and appoint delegates to the Nor folk Convention. They should choose, as other towns and counties have done, their best men, their ablest and most practiced de fa iters, to represent Richmond in that assem blage. We fully agree with the South Side Democrat, that" if an enlightened and liberal spirit is manifested in the deliberations of the Norfolk Convention, if the whole State is ■ought to be benefitted, then will it be a hap py day for the Old Dominion, But, if a dif ferent spirit manifests itself, if sectional pre judice and local aggrandizement at the ex pense of the public good is sought to be foist ed upon it, then it would be better for the State that it bad never been.'' The Agricultural Fair.—As far as we are able to learn, there will be a larger assem blage of persons drawn together by the ap proaching Agricultural Fair than were here upon the like occasion last year. The rail road# have penetrated further th&n they had gone last year, and we have the additional stimulus this year of free transportation from Alexandria for the members of the Agricul tural Society and articles to be exhibited. — From the West, from the Valley, and from both the North and South side of James Riv er there will be a large number of visitors. It becomes our duty to see that this vast concourse of people shall be comfortably and well provided for, and in order that this shall be done, it behoves our citizens to begin at once to make preparation. There is time enough: but there U certainly no time to be lost. They ought to take the subject at once under consideration, and make such arrange ments as the occasion calls for. They should be well planned and actively carried out, so that there shall be no occasion for complaint and no confusion. We invite the attention of our citizens tothis matter, and trust it will be promptly considered. The Northern People.—That a majori ty of the people of the North look with dis approbation upon the aggressive schemes of abolitionism, we cannot for a moment doubt. A great mistake is often made by Southern prints in failing to discriminate between the true men and the traitors in the free States. We ful'y believe that if the people of the free States could all be assembled in one place, and the question of interference with slavery in the South be submitted to them, ninety-nine out of every hundred would be found opposed to such interference. Still farther, if the politicians would leave the peo ple to themselves, the great majority of them would regard Wilmot Provisoes and Nebras ka bills with supreme indifference. But the politicians have made a hobby of anti-slave ry, and the abolitionists are noisy and active, while the conservative portion of the com munity are quiet and minding their own bu siness. But the time has come when this in difference will be as fatal to the public secu rity as a hostile and aggressive spirit. The good and patriotic men of the North must arouse, and give the cause of the Constitution en active support, or the abolitionists will triumph, and ihe whole country be made to suffer the penalty of their madness. Trick of the Free Soi/.iiu .—Under this head the New York Herald denounces, as a free soil trick, a letter from Illinois recently published in a Southern journal, in which a strong prospect of the introduction of slavery into Illinois is held out, and Southerners are warmly urged to migrate thither with a view to effect such a reform in the constitution of the State. Tho object of the letter, remarks the Herald, would not be as transparent as it is had it not coutained a pithy sentence cal ling upon Southern men to "let Kansas and Nebraska go." This explains the whole.— The free soil emigrants find the Southern men pouring in too rapidly for their purposes, and hence the "tub to the whale"'in the shape of the invitation to reform Illinois. Extension of the Southside Railroad to Covington. —At an internal improve ment meeting held in Lexington, Va., on the 2d inst., for the purpose of appointing dele gates to the Norfolk Convention, the follow ing resolutions were adopted: Resolved. That In the epinton of this meeting, the aenerai interests of the eomecoowealth imperiously demand—first, the construction ef the Covington and Ohio Railroad on State aceonct: second, the exten sion of the Southside Ra'lroad by the valley of the James River and Its tribu srles to ike Eastern ter minus of the Covington and Ohio Railroad; and third, the eatension of the Maaaesas Oap Railroad to conaeet with the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad at or near Salens, in aoeordaaee with Ihe views of the . ooareatioa hoidea la this place in November, 1*53. Reeolvsd, That onr Delegatee to tha Norfolk eor vention be, aad they are hereby Instructed te pro mote by all fNfSr moans the adoption of the prio eiples of the above reeelatioß by tae said conven tion. The fttxlngton Gazette in a long article, sustains these resolutions. The extension ol the .VaaaaMt Oap road to Salem is a por tion of the programme which will not be agreeable to the Southaidera. James Bivek ajsd KanawhaCanal.—The Lexington Oasette remarks that if the water line hftd been extended from Covington to the Ohio, according to the estimates of the New York State Engineer and Snrreyor. the Vir ginia Canal woald carry the produce of the West and Nerthweet to the Atlantic seaboard, one dollar and seventy-four cants par tdn obaapar than conld the lines of New York or aoyrfhar. The Kngiaspr exults in the idea that Ilia water Una has -been by the Virginia Legislature: and a railroad sob stitated. The region la remote from the aettled por tlona of Dominica, being about 200 milea by eee, the only convenient mode of getting there from St. Do mingo City. To lote it entirely wonld be no aenooa injury to the Dominiciana, were it not the prelude to aome auch performance aa took place In Texaa from 1836 to 1845, with the extenaion and confirmation ot Slavery in the North American Union aa ite great ecd and objret. The Tribune denies that we have any need of Samana for a naval station, and in regard to the suggestion of the Washington Star of fortifying the peninsular as a sort of outwork to Cub.i, says it would like to see the Presi dent calling upon Congress for money for snch an object! It is true, says the Tribune, "we shall be told there are other benefits than those of nigger-driving to be reaped in Dominica. In the Cibao country, adjoining S'imana, are rich mines of the precious metals which have long ceased to be >«>rked for want of enterprise and labor, but which Ame ricans can re-open; there are mighty forests of mahogany which await the blows of Ame rican axes; but these are things that we have enough of already, or can well do without." It is clear to us that the Tribune wants to see Samana annexed. Job's mouth is evi dently watering for that mahogany and gold dust. The monomania of the Tribune in re gard to slavery is beginning to excite suspi cions. We should surprised if that journal is a secret orgaiiof 'some of the South ern Secessionists, who fee it to alienate the Northern people from the South, so as to facil itate disunion! jy* The great danger to the American Union and to American Liberty is not slave ry, but the unhallowed ambition of political aspirants. Upon the same rock which has shipwrecked other Republics, we bid fair to strike and sink. Most of our public men look to self, not to country, and are willing to make any sacrifice of principle, of conscience, or of the public welfare, for the gratification of their own ambition. The North River Improvement.—The I Lexington Gazette justly remarks, that the first and most important of all improvements with Rockbridge should be the completion of the North River Canal. We have no doubt that that work, when completed, will be of more advantage to Rockbridge county than all other works put together, as well as be come a most important feeder of the James River and Kanawha Canal. Feast or TABERHACLEs(SuccoTH.)—This Featival obaerved by the Jewiah nation in com memoration of the departure of their anceetora from the land of Egypt to Canaan, a travel through tbe deaerta of forty yeara, daring which lime they dwelt in boothe, or tents, commenced laat evening, the eve of the fifteenth day of Tiari, (or Seventh Month,) and will be held to-day and to-morrow (Sunday) aa days of holy convocation. In the Bible the ordinance relative to thia feast is thus recorded: "On the fifteenth day oi this seventh month, shall be the F>-ait of Tabernaclea for seven days unto the ',ord, &.c. Ax. And ye shall take unto your selves on the first day the fruit of the tree Hadar, (Citron,) branches of Palm-trees and tbe bougha of the Myrtle tree and Wlllowaof the brook, and ye ahall tejoice before the Lord your God aeven days, and ye sh ll keep it aa afeaatunto the Lard seven daya in the year; it ahall be a statute forever throughout your generations; in the seventh month shall ye celebrate it. In booths (Tabernacles) shall ye dwell seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths, in order that your generations may know, that I caused the children of Israel to dwell fn booths, when I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; lam the Lord your God." In compliance with thia divine injunction, though or dained upwards ot five thousand years ago, the la raelitea throughout the world hallow this day with utmost sanctity. Each congrqaation has a Taber nacle erected contiguous to their Synagogue, in which tbe congregations, after their aervice, assem ble and enjoy tbe feast. The palm-brancb, citron, myrtle and willow of the brook are used in the Synagogue service. The combination of tbe most arrogant species of fruit and the lowly willow are symbolical of the attributea of the Creator, fully demonstrating that He knoweth no distinction be tween the supplications of the rich or poor, the high or the low; they are alike in His sight. Tbis selec tion from the vegetable kingdom repreaents also the structure of man: "the palm branch,''the spine or man erect; "the citron," the heart; "the myrtle," the eye; "the willow," tbe lips; all easential in the praiae of Almighty Gcd. Tbe Rev. HenryS. Jacobs, whose lecture on Sun day evening last was listened to with such marked admiration as being one replete wi.h beauty and in struction, ia expected to lecture to-morrow morn ing (Sunday) at the Synagogue, Mayo street. Curious Stomach —An *x was killed by one of the butchers in the first market, last Thurs day evening, and on examining its maw seven hair balls were discovered, the largest of which mea sured nineteen inches in circumference and weigh ed nearly two pound*. The other six varied in size from that of a hen's egg to a large apple.— Thpse balls are iormed from tbe bair the animal gather* upon its tongue while licking itaelf, but wa never heard of seven being taken from one stom ach, or of one measuring nineteen inches around. Miss A. Ince.—The patrons of the drama willjdoubtless be delighted to learn that the gifted and talented Miss Ince, whose tine reading, accu rate conceptions and life-like personations were so much admired while fulfilling an engagement at tbe Marshall last season, ha* arrived in the city, and will appear at the theatre, on Monday night, in one of her most attractive piece*. We understand from a friend that Miss Ince ba* improved very much (ince last here—that her voice has increased in volume—that she has attained more confidence in her own powers—and that familiarity with the stage has increased that grace and elegance toe* sential to a first rate actress. All these, added to her natural sp'ightlines* of mind, cannot fail to ensure her crowded bouses, and win for her the appreci ation due to a lady of her exalted personal worth. We therefore say to our readers, secure tickets in time, if you desire to see the first and brightest star of tbe season. Bigamy.—The Henrico County Court met yesterday morning to proceed with the exam ination of Bfcjamia F. Prentiss, charged with big amy, but the officer wbo bad been dispatched to Pennsylvania having failed to reach the city, and a telegraphic dispatch having been received from bin that he would be here last night, tbe case was adjourned ever until this morning, when, if the witnesses have arrived, the investigation will pro. ceed. It is proper for us to *ay, that the prisoner's counsel announced their readiness to meet the ex amination at once, acd desired the Court to have that fact entered upon record. The Court having no other criminal business to attend to, took up the civil docket, and (pent the re mainder ot the session in hearing that class of eases. Wife Whipping.—Daniel O. Dunnivant came before the Mayor yesterday morning to an swer the charge ot cruelly assaulting and beating bis wife, Mary, on the sth inst. These parties re aide in the neighborhood of the Second market, where the cries of murder were heard by many. The wife, on being sworn, stated that they had been married about three months —that on Thursday last Daniel threw her headforemost down a flight of steps —that he jammed her head against the wall until sbe was nearly senseless—and that be then beatber severely and tore from her head a handful of hair, which she exhibited in court. The prisoner did not pretend to deny having beat his wife, but gave as a reason that she would not attend her church every morning, as he desired. James Denhart, on hearing the crieaof murder, went to the prisioner's door and knocked violently for admission. Whpn it was opened he saw the wile lying upon the floor in a helpless condition. The Mayor held the accused to bail lor hi* good behavior in the sum of $200, and then aent him on to the Grand Jury term of the Hustings Court, to answer for his barbarity. Punished.—A negro woman, called Bet ay Clarke, in the service of William Gouldln, made her appearance before the Mayor, yesterday, to answer the charge of using provoking and insult ing language to Mary Tyree, a free woman, and trespassing upon her premises. Betsy la a woman of high temper, and is bountifully blessed with the gift ot gab After laying down the law to Mary, promised to handle her without gloves if sbe dared to complain to the city authorities against her.— She waa ordered ten stripes by the Mayor, for her bad conduct, and her punishment afterward* in creased by order ol the master. Tipplwo.—Joseph Augustine, the keep* er of a confectionary store, on 17th street, near the vegetable market, waa fined 95 by the Mayor, on the evidence of A. Rowlett, who testified to seeing three men purchase, pay for, and take drioks, in the house of tiie accused, on the 2d lust Augus tine made no defence, the proof of hi* guilt being most conclusive. For the second offence, If takfn before the Huttings Court, the punishment of tip pling is itnpria onment in the city jail Bit bt a Doo.—A small white boy, whose name we could not learn, was badly bitten by a bull terrier, whilst passing alone 17th street, yesterday morning. A gentleman living not far Irom lhe Chapel, on witnessing the occurrence, procured n gun and killed the brute at once. If the Council would pas* an ordinance making It imperative on owners to hare their dog* muzzled, children would then be free from the risk of being torn to piece*.
