DAIMT DISPATCH that 01 »" th " MUwm of IICHMOBB, YAi J THURSDAY MORNING, OCTOBER. 16, itM. Por.roAMr Dekirded.—Tbe Clereland Plaiodealer publishes a letter, professing to fce written by James Mc Knight, a Mormon elder, vindicating the system of Polygamy. The elder discourses upon the beauties of polygamy with great nnctioo. He says that d»e of the advantages of the Mormon system is that their marriages are indissoluble after death, which is more than can be said of them during life—Brigham Young having the power to dissolve them whenever he ohooses. *■ Elder McKnight states, in a spirit of be coming humility, that as to himself, he has a*yet married but two wives. " This," quoth the elder, in a dejeeted tone, "is a small be ginning, but the day of small things is not to be despised." He confesses, however, that having but two wives, while the majority around him have more, he feels "somewhat dim," but promises to do better after a while. He states that the young Mormon la dies often choose an old man with ten or twenty, or forty wives, in preference to a young man without one. Mr. McKnight avers that there are instances of from six to ten wives inhabiting one dwelling, and living amicably, though for the most part each wife has her own house and rules her own chil dren. The refractory females are also prompt ed to docility by the Mormon belief, that un less the woman is obedient and submissive to her husband, she will most assuredly be damned. We would respectfully ask the Cleveland Plaindealer whether James McKnight, Mor mon elder, is not a creation ef the waggish brain that condacts the Plaindealer. Pica yune gives the following particulars of the assassi nation of Casteneda. Since I last bad the pleasure of writing to you, nothing of importance had occurred in our orderly and quiet city until the night before last, when it was disturbed in its propriety by one of those most cowardly assassinations, which occasionally occur amongst our benighted populace. This was one of more importance than usual, as the unfortunate victim, Jose A. Castafieda, was the individual who captured Gen. Lopez, and against whom vengeance was tworn at the time. Soon after he received the reward, (#6,000,) which the Government offered for the capture of Lopez, he went to Spain, kissed the Queen's hand, and received the hoi ored cross of distinction, for his (gallantry,) and he has but lately returned. He had been watched constantly for the latal opportunity, and on the evening of the lith, between the hours of 7 aud 8, he was playing a eamcol billiards at a coffee house, called Martery Belona, outside of the city, and as he was in the act of striking the ball, with his back towards a blind on the piazza, he was shot through the blind, two balls entering the back of his bead, which al mcßt instantly killed him; and although there were a great number of people present, the assatin mad* gaod bis escape. Gen. Concha had an interview wi;h bim on that day, and it is said, gave him an ap pointment as captain of a partido. Concha feels this as an insult to him, and has offered a large re ward for the ap prehension of the assassin. Yes terday afternoon he was burled. At the time of starting, a mob collected, and showed a determina tion to prevent, if possible, the interment A guard of soldiers were ordered out to protect the re mains on the way to " Campo Santo," which was followed by an immense crowd, yelling, throwing 6tones, Sc , and it was with great difficulty that the grave was reached. Several ot the civil guard were badly injured-a number of the rioters were arrested, and no doubt will be severely dealt with This Castaneda was despised by every one ; bis character was always bad, and once his life was saved by Gen. Lopez, when he was uresident ol the military commission, by his casting vote. Such was his gratitude, that ho hunted the poot man out with dogs in his hour of distress, to get the reward for hia precious head. • Kxtraoedinajly Mania rom SriciDK.-It appears from the Georgetown, Ky., Herald, that a French mania for committing suicide has taken possession of quite a number of the Inhabitants thereabouts.
