LATEST MAIL NEW! Stßioi's Accident.—'We regret to hear of a serious accident vefterdsy to Mr. A. C. Martin, conductor of one of th# freight trains on the Orange road. Whilst the train was in rapid motion, coming towards Alexandria, Mr. Martin was standing upon the top of one ofthe cars, with his back towards the loco motive., and in passing over the Kappahan-' nock bridge his head struck the timbers of the upper part of the bridge, knocking him offthe car and on to the track, when he was run over by a part of the train, and then pre cipitated into the river. He was soou taken out. and carried to Culpepper C. H., where he received medical attendance. His inju ries, it is fesred. *re serious. Alfi.r. (Saz., Tkurs. Boston, Oct 31.—Henry J. Gardner, Esq., the Know-Nothing candidate for Governor, has addressed a letter to Hon. Charles Allen, denying generally and in detail the charges made against him by .Judge Allen, in a speech made by him at the Free Soil Convention at Worcester. Mr. Gardner asserts that he has always been an advocate for the repeal or modification of the fugitive law, and was in favor of a fusion of the Whigs and Free Soiler?. He also says he never did. nor ever will vote for a man who is or has been in favor of the fugitive slave law, and in June last he signed a memorial to Congresa for its unconditional repta'. Heavy Damages.—Nathan Guilds, Jr., of St. Louis, but formerly of Baltimore, has re covered £2,550 damages from the directors of the Bank of Missouri, to indemnity him for the expense he was put to a few years ago in defending himself in a suit brought against him by the bank on a charge of em bezzling SIOO,OOO, and of which he was ac quitted. This is the second case determined in favor of Mr. Childs, and the aggregate damages amount to $4,910. FIRE IN CHARLESTON. Columbia, Nov. I.—The tire at Charieiton de stroyed Chapin's carriage repository. Insured lor ?15,L)00— $5000 in the Royal Company, $5000 in (iirard Company, and the rest divided among seve lal other compauies. Saveral other of Chapin's buildings were also burnt, one of which was in sured for $5000 in the Home and in the New Ha ven Insurance companies. Gilbert's coach factory was also burnt. It w#< insured at New York for $5000. The Pavilion Hotel was but slightly dam aged in the rear. Thestbatnship Quaker City, from Philadelphia, has arrived. CißcriT Court.—The session of tbe Circuit Court was closed on Monday evening last. The Jury in the caie of Common wealth vs. Jones, being unable to agree, were discharged. We understand ftiat two ill tbe Jury were for a verdict of murder in the first degree, the other* beiag lor confinement in the penitentiary for a term of nine to eighteen years. Mr. li. C. Denison, ah aged printer, died in Phila delphia, on Wednesday last. SAFETY OF THE STEAMER ISABEL—BREAK ING OF HER SHAFT. Columbia, S C., Nov. I—By advices received at Charleston, I learn that the steamer Isabel was not wrecked, as reported. She broke her shaft on the 21st, whilst on her trip to Havana; hence the report of her being wrecked. Charleston, Nov. I.—The pilot boat Datt has ar rived from Key West, and reports that on Ihe2'ith, the steamer Isabel put in there with her shaft bro ken. Bhe will be able to return to Charleston in mo derate weather, with one wheel. THE EXPECTED STEAMER. New York Nov. 1 —The latest information from Sandy Hook reports no signs of the steamer Arabia, now in her twelfth day out from Liverpool, with dates to the 21st ult.
