THE DAILY DISPATCH " "TUESPAT MOKWHtdTNOVIIMgEfc 7,ItM. Oct or Dm.-Tbt State of Connecticut hi out of debt, *&4 haa money loaned out at iiUiMt. The achooi fend hi reload alts,- 076,000, and other productive property of the State la ■»«**—at •■<oo,ooo, the greater part of Which U inverted in bank atocks .- Rich. Enq., A'or. 3. The prosperity of Connecticut is the remit oT the remarkable industry, economy and ingenuity of ita people. Tbe State is by no means diati«guish«i for fertility of resource, bet ita'people are. It would be very difficult if not altogether impossible, to place a Con necticut Yankee on any spot or in any cir cumstances In the world in which he would not soon be paying his way, getting out of debt himself, and getting other people into debt to bim. This being out of debt, or, in other words, independence, is the main spring of all Yankee action. As an illustra tion of the manner in which the Connecticut people avail themselves of every opportunity to "make a living," a friend mentions to us the case of Fair Haven, a little village in Connecticut, not far distant from New Haven. There ia no earthly reason why there should be a village at Fair Haven, at all; above all, why that village should be thriving and pros perous. There are no advantages of soil or position, or climate, which would have any other effect upon any race of people but Connecticut Yankees, aave to drive them •way to a more genial spot in the far West. Nevertheless, Fair Haven is one of the most prosperous of villages; its people are all well fed and well clothed; there is not a citi zen of the place but is out of debt, and has a little surplus. And how was this done ? Why, simply by the oyster trade! They send off boats to the waters of the Chesa peake, buy oysters at a mere song, take them home to Fair Haven, and then all Pair Ha ven—men, women and children sets itself to opening oysters and pickling them, and thus supplies with this article nearly the whole of the interior of New England! The friend who mentioned these facts to us asked us to take a walk with him to the docks, and he would show us a still farther illustration of Fair Haven enterprise. We did so, and were shown a large schooner from Fair Haven, which had just discharged upon the wharves a tremendous cargo of oyster shells. We had some conversation with the master of the vessel, and found that, having purchased oysters in our waters for a mere trifle, these <nte Fair Haven people were sending us back the oyster shells, which were no doubt in their own way, and selling them for seven cents a bushel, (to be burnt into lime,) so that the value of this one cargo of oyster shells was over seven hundred dol lars ! And the vessel having discharged her load, was now ready for return freight. This is but one instance of Connecticut enterprise and management. No wonder that such a State is "out of debt." Austria. —It is astonishing, the clearness with which Austria sees her way out of the woods, now that the allies have Rained some advantages in the East. Some of the Eng lish presses compliment her upon the "digni ty" of the decisive attitude which she is now exhibiting towards the Czar. The "dignity" consists simply in joining the stronger par ty. A more flagrant instance of royal ingra titude has never been displayed than that which the shameless Austrian monarch is now exhibiting to the man who saved him from destruction. Nevertheless, it is some satisfaction to know, that the people of Europe, the only parties in the Eastern war, in whose fortunes Americans can feel the slightest interest, may . derive some advantage from the result of the contest. The kings and potentates will be so irreconcilably embittered against each other that honest folk will have some chance of getting their rights; and when crowns and aristocracies are hereafter threatened by re volution, there will be no league of tyrants, as heretofore, to come to the rescue of the point which is menaced. Austria, in "parti- enlar, will be made to atone for her cruel wrongs to Hungary. The close of the East ern war will, in all probabi'ity, be followed by a general Hungarian revolution; and the Hungarians have already prove 1 that, single banded, they are more than a match for Aus tria. Railroad Accidents.—Scarcely a day passes but we are called upon to chronicle some terrible railway or steamboat accident. It would seem as if there were no longer any security for life or limb on American roads. A man is almost as safe who enters a battle field, as a railway car. Can nothing be done to atop this terrible havoc and waste of hu man life? It is a disgrace to our civilization aad humanity, that we are content to sit qui etly, with folded hands, under such constant, wholesale butcheries, instead of taking the most energetic and thorough measures for the removal of the evil. Bailway travelling is as secure in England and on the European continent as any other mode of travelling.— Why Bhould it not be so here? Comwstoudknc* outwren Mr. Peabody and Ma. The substance of this correspondence is thus given: Mr. Slcklee, apparwitly speaking l n behalf of the wounded legation, asks for such reparation as »h« code of honor prescribes. Mr. Pwbod, „ksin ton if Mr. Sickles, in nsing the word "legation" speaks for Mr. Buchanan or for hlms*-lt t]o ' Mr. Sickles replies that be speaks lor himself alone' whereopoa Mr. Peabody replies that he does not consider that in inviting Mr. Sickles to his house on the 4th ofJnly hegnve Mr. Sickles any right to open a correspondence with him, and accordingly re turns the Secretary's note, at which, by the way, his useful and patriotic friend, George Sanders, was the bearer.
