They first tore down an iron cross over the (sate entrance way. stoned the front win dows, and broke in the panel of the door. A cry was rfised for straw and matches to tire the ediiice. Kiehl, and Capt John Gans'company of Troop, under Col. Abel Smith, arrived at the City Park iu Fourth St., and were drawn up to await orders of the Mayor. About 1 o'clock this morning, another party had Cohered around the church, with the avowed inten tion of burning i; down. The military were furnish ed with bait cartridges and marched at once to the • ••-ne. The rioters, however, had quietly dispersed. Spies were stationed throughout the city, and the movements of every man iu the street were closely scni'inued. At half past 2 o'clock this morning, the streets were nearly deserted, and no fears of the riot being resumed, the military retired, and sj the riot ended without bloodshed. The Baltimore brokers refused on Saturday to take the note* ol Seiden, Withers & Co , Washing ton bankers, and also all Virginia State stock. David Hoffman, a distinguished Baltimore law yer and an author of reputation, died of apoplexy, in New York, on Saturday. The United States mail steamship Pacific sailed irotn New York on Saturday for Liverpool. She took out Sti l >0,000 in specie. The royal mail steamer America, from Liverpool via Halifax, arrived at Boston on Saturday. Her mails were sent South in the afternoon. St. Paul's church, in Montreal, with other prop" e ty adjoining, was destroyed by fire last week.— The damage is estimated jit 8100,000. NEW YORK ELECTION. New York. Nov. 11.—The returns come in very xlowly from the counties, but continue to show gains for Clark, which, if continued, will give bim a ma jority. The Governorship, however, still hangs in great doubt between Mr. Seymour and Mr. Clark. The official vote alone, which cannot be had for some diys, will be nectsiaty to decide, sa close is the con test. Mr. Raymond, whig, is supposed to have been elected Lieutenant Governor. This, however, ad mits of doubt, but his chances are best, so far as re turns have come to hand. Mr Filzhugh, whig, has been elected Canal Com n.issioner by a large majority, and Mr. Browne, whig, Prison Inspector [second dispatch ] B»ymor is undoubtedly elected His reported majority is 3,686. The Assembly stands—B2 fusion ists, 38 democrats, and 3 temperance men. The con gressional delegation stands— £G fusionists and 7 de mocrats. New York, Nov. 11.—A riot is apprehended at Williamsburg to-morrow. The military will be held in readiness. The Mayor has usued a prtcla mation counseling order. DAMAGE TO DRAWBRIDGE. Philadelphia. Nov 11—The damage to the drawbridge at Grey's Ferxy hss not been "repaired — Itwii! take several days to repair it. The train of last night couid not start in consequence of the da rrnse to the bridge. This morning the patsengers walked abross the bridge, ana took the cars on the west side 8y thin accident, all the trains have been thrown out of time: and in consequence, two accommoda tion trains ciine in cel.ision near Marcus Hook. The engines were damaged to a considerable extent, but the passengers escaped uchtut. Runaway Netio Kili.ed —On Sunday last, near the mouth of Thirteen, in Mason county. Mr. Na than Greeniee discovered a runaway negro, who belonged to Dickinson ii hhrewabury, in tho Salines, and called to hiic to give himself up. The negro re foisd. Ureenlee then attempted to fire a gun at him /or the purpose of frightening him. The gun missed fire. The negro then rushed on Greenlee, knocked him down with a elub commenced choking him, and got his thumb in his mouth. Greenlee finding him self about to be overpowered, succeeded in getting out his knife, and killed the negro instantly. The negro, in his death, stilt kept Greenlee's thumb in his mouth, and his jaws had to be forced open to get it out. We have received a written statement from Mr. Greenlee, which is in substance what we havs ►-ated a bote. —Kanawha Republican, J\'ov. ti. THE MARKETS. Kossuth was foalded in Columbia County, State of Sew York, on the 9th of July, 1847 ; is a beautiful rieh dark-brown, five feet two and • halfinches high, of (treat muscular pawer and symmetry of form, do cile disposition, and can trot his mile inside of three minutes, and ha* been pronounced by trainer* the moat proxi-ing young horns they had ever »een — Hi« colt*, dropped list spring, are equal to any in the State, and as a proof of it, $200 a piece has been re'used for aeveral of them when *ix montb* old. The sire of Black Hawk wßb the celebrated a'.allion Andrew Jackson, (the aire alsocf Kemble Jaokson, Henry Clay, Millei's Damsel, aod a large number of other fast ones ) the fastest trotting horse of his day—having be.aten Daniel D. Tompkins, Fire King, Lady Warrington, Modesty and otners. He was sired by Young I!a --shaw, who was by imported Grand Bashaw, and he by VV iidair, and Wildair by Cade, who was by the Godolphin Arabian. The dam of Andrew Jackson was VVhynot, and she by imported Messenger. Black Hawk's dam was the distinguished trotting mare Sally Miller, who has trotted her mile in two minutes and thirty seconds, ana was not excelled by any horse of her time. She was got by TippooSaib, and he by imported Messenger, herdam by Gunpow der. Black Hawk's lime, with heavy weight, is the best on record up to the time of his death, and es tablished his claim to be the best trotting stallion in America. Performances or Black Hawk —November 17th. 1847. beat Jenny Lind over the Union Course, match $500, mile heats—Place Hawk to a 250 lb. wagon, Jenny Lind to a skeleton wagon, weighing about 75 lbs—winning the first and third he-it* in 2:40—2:43; Jeriny Lind winning the second in 2:38 April 25, IB 18. beat Lady Sutton over the Union Con se, in a match for $7(iO, with an inside stake of •SSOO, n.ile heats, best three in five, 250 lb. wagons— time, 2:43—2:43—2:42—2:55£. May 15th, 1848, beat Ainericus over the Union Course in a match for $200n, three mile heat*, to 250 lb. wagons—time, 8:31—8:S6; for further perform ances, see Turf Register for 1847 and 1848, where will also be seen the challenge of hi* owner to trot him ossinst any horse in the world, for any amouct, from $500 to $6000, which challenge never was ac cepted.
