AcqurrrKD.—Armstrong,*who has been in the jail of Monroe county for several years, under a charge of bigamy, has been acquitted. One of the Men.—The Rockingham Register thus describes a citizen of Pendleton county—Fre derick Kelater by name: He is now in his 88th year, and has killed during bis lile one thousand deer, ten elk, three hundred bears, thirty panthers, and fifty three wolves. Veri ly, be has slain hia share of varmits. He was a volunteer in the whiskey in urrection—and has a very young wife, with two interesting young boys— "chips of the old block"—one two years old and the other four. Neel has assumed the sole proprietorship of the Virginia Gazette. It will hereafter be a neutral paper. Clerkship.—James B. Headen has been elected clerk of the county and circuit courts of Floyd.— We don't know whether It was " a Know Nothing triumph " or not North Carolina Legislature.—A bill is before the North Carolina Legislature to Incorporate the Charlotte and Wilmington Railroad Company, by which a connection is to be formed between Wil mington and Charlotte, via Lumberton, Rocking ham, Wadeaboro", &c. The capital of the company i* to be $2,400,000; and when individuals shall have subscribed $800,000 (one-third,) the State is to en dorse the bonds of the company for the remaining two-thirds, retaining as security a mortgage upon all the effects of the company. The people of this vicinity are interested in the fate of this bill, in view of the anticipated connexion by means of the Danville Railroad. A bill was introduced last friday to raise the sal aries of the principal officers of the State as follows: that of the Governor to $3,000; the Treasurer to $2,000; the Comptroller to $1,500, and the judges of the Supreme Court to $2,000 per annum. Revelations or the New York Dentists.— We copy the following from the New York He rald: For rome days psst, meetings hare been held by the dentists of New York, with a view to elicit facts bearing on the recent case ot Dr. Beale, of Phila delphia; and in the proceeding! of these met tings, which have obtained a wide publicity from the press, revelations of the most startling and unex» pected character have been made, It seems that the use of chloroform and ether, in a majority of cases, has been followed by the most unpleasant and shameful consaquences. Dr. Barlow testifies that "he has known ladles (under chloroform; of course unconsciously, but seemingly not so at the moment, divulge their dearest and most delicate secrets." Or. Castle "is satisfied of the influence of ether over the reproductive system." Mr Francis declares that a lady to whom he gave chlo roform "used language of the most ridiculous, pro lane, and oven obscene description." Dr. Hazlett confesses that a female patient of his, "as she grad ually felt the excitement caused by the ether, caught him round the neck in the most endearing man ner." Mr. Hurd had a lady under the inflence of ether, "chase himself (the operator) around the room, af fording most unmistadable signs of perverted feel ing, so much so that her mortified husband begged him not to give her any more." Other medical men gave testimony to the like effect. These revelations have taken the community by surprise. Whatever may have been the motive of the New York dentists in holding their meeting and giving publicity to the facU elicited thereat, it is something very strange that a practice fraught with such abominable effects should have been in vogue (or so many years without a single attempt to ex pose or discard it. People have been sending their wives and their daughters to the dentists to take chlorolorm ever since its Introduction, and though, according to the concurrent testimony of the most eminent practitioners, it has hardly ever been ad ministered without causing the Innocent sufferer to violate the laws of modesty, no one has ever heard a word on the subject tilt a dentist Is sent to prison for an Indecent assault on a young girL The Blue Ridge Railroad bill ha* passed the Huuaeof Representative* of Sooth Carolina by a vote of 05 to 52. The average per tierce waa then $24 97: last year it was $25 05. Of the Domestic Produce of the country expor ted the last Treasury year, amounting to $215,157,- 504, the produce of Domestic Manufacturea com posed $26,179,503, or about one-eighth, say 12 49 per cent.; and of this last sum, the produce ol the Cotton manufacture of the United States made $5.- 535,516, or a little over one-tifib, against $8,768,894 Cotton manufacturers exported the previous year. The falling off is principally in uncolored Cotton Piece Goods, which yielded to the export table in 1853 $6,926,485, and this year only $3,927,148. A Breach of Promise Casx and its Rmult.— About a year since, It will be remembered, the cir cumstances relative to a suit brought against Wm. K. Hall, at that time Superintendent of the Harlem Railroad for a breach of promise of marriage, by a young lady from Washington, were published; and it was subsequently stated that she had obtained a verdict of $13,000 damages against him. Since that time, says the New York Express, hehasap. plied for the benefit of the Insolvent act, submitted to imprisonment in jail, and recently obtained a discharge from his debts; by means of which he escapes the penalty and leaves the young lady to take care of herselt. Such is law in New Ycrk. Samuel D. Scovllle, who absconded from Mason, the 29 th October, with 910,000 of the funds of Agen cy in that place of the Marine Rank of Bevanriaby and who was arrested in St. Louis, has been taken to Macon and lodged in jail About $8600 of the money stolen has been restored to the Rank. It was rumored in our city last evading, says a late number of the St Paul's <Mln.) Times, that the deck hands ol the War Eagle,on her last trip down, had a fracas, when soon after they were heard nail ing up a box. When the boat reached a point below Prairie du Chlen, the box was taken ashore and buried. This box was dug up by the inhabitants to which was found the corpse of a young man with his skull smashed In. An Inquest was held on th 6 body—the box was identified a* coming from the War Eagle, and officers were sent to arrest the pro gress of the boat. We hope that this disagreeable rumor may prove false, but the information seems to emanate from a responsible source.
