The surrounding flats were flooded by this stream, and it was found requisite to cut ditches to preserve the roads from inundation. [Sacramento Herald, June 1. A Slave Fobcibly Taken fbom a Ballimole Vksskl —The brig Young America, Captain Roi gers, of Baltimore, recently arrived at Savacna la Mar, Jamaica, having ou board a slave steward named Anderson, who said ho belonged to a Mr Robinson. On arriving in port, tbe Captain, it is said, knowing tbatif the slave landed ou Brllish soil he would become free, took great pains to keep him on board, and to prevent communication wi:h any one on shore. "By some means, the report that a slvae was on board got wind, and the inhabitants became terri bly excited, callirg upon the magistracy to inter fere aod obtain the man's releasH. The magis trate were in donbt, and considered 1 tbe duty i f the Custom's officers to demand the liberation of tbe slave. Tbe consignee of the vessel, Mr. Mason, a magistrate and a member of Assembly, is re ported to bave said "that tbe people had better look sharp what they were doing, or they might c%use another Greysowu scene—that the Americans would send a vessel into the harbor, and »«riH bombs flying into the m®" ti.o not being intimidated, seeing tbat the authorities would not interfere, took the matter Into their own bands, manned their canoes, and made tor the brigsntlne. Five stalwart negoes first boarded her by main force, and seizing the slave, bore him eft'in triumph. " When the man reached tbe shore the people cheered vociferously, and if the Captain had not been careful of himself, ho would have been as saulted. The only uiagis'.rate who took any active part in tbe affair, was Mr. Justice R. F. Thomas.— He, to prevent an assault on the Captain, dreading from the great excitement that such would have been the result, hastened to the beach and received the liberated man with these words: ' Are you a freeman or a slave V 'I aoi a slave,' was there ply. 'Then,' said Mr T., 'in the name of her Majesty the Queen, I now declare that you are free and at liberty, having landed on British soil ' The U. S Consul at Kingston has laid the lacta before the Governor of Jamaica, and demanded the punishment of the negroes for foieibly board" log an American vessel, and abductiug one of her crew. The Consul cautions American shipmasters against shipping negroes in vessels coming to the island. It is a constant tource of trouble and in» convenience, as they almost invariably desert Indiana Free Banks.—The Auditor of Indiana announces that the circulating notes of the North Western Bank of Bloomfield and of the Steuben County Bank of Angola, are redeemed at his office The following is a list of the suspended banks which have resumed and of those which are re deeming their paper: Shawnee Bank, at Attica, resumed; Bank of South Bend, do; Tippecanoe Bank, do; Back of Fort Wayne, redeemed at Branch Bank, Indianapolis ; Upper Wabash Bank ; Staik County Bank; Bank of Rockport; North Western Bank ; Steuben County Bank, rede-med at office of Auditor of State; Great Western Bank, redeemed at Terre Haute. The Cio cincati Sun Ivarn* from a druggist. that among his customers for opium is a girl as young as fourteen years, who Is fast falling a victim to tbe pernicious habit. The Louisville (Ky) Courier relates an in stance* still more sad. How it YVosks —The prohibitory liquor law dots not seein to woik as resti ictlvely in Boston as was expected. The magistrates are active enougt. io sending the violator* of the law betore a jury, but the juries are little disposed to convict. Four teen cases recently tried, wuded in an acquittal of alt exccpt one, the exception being a disagreement. In most of the cases the evidence has been defec tive, but iu one or two cases the evidence warrant, ed a conviction. The juries being declared judges of the law as well as of the facts, they virtually have decided against the law. Shocking Affair m Brooklyn.— One Man Killed and Tiro Wounded—An artray occurred on tbe corner of Koltnn avenue and Raymond atreet, Brooklyn, about 10 o'clock on Sunday morning, which resulted In the death of a young man named Cbarlea Johnson, and the mortal wounding of hla brother, Robert Johnaon. Another man wa» also aerioualy injured. The particulars of the affair are thus given: i"Tho Johnsons, with P. McDonough and two or three others, were on their way home from Ihe house of an elder brother, and at tbd corner of Fulton avenni; they discovered three men (subse quently found to be named Michael McGorman, Michael McGee aod Patrick Sorley) extended across the gutter, laoe downward, and feet extend* ed In the strext. Seeing a new pair of boota near tnfni, and (upposlng them to be sleeping off the effecta of strong drink, one of the party remarked: "Somebody will steal theae lioots; we had better start them home, or tbe M. Acting upon this soggestien, they attempted to aroute the men by sbakirg them, and then by rub bing their ears, but only succeeded In aronring He- Qorman, who, springing op tuddenlv, said he would go hon-e for nobody, drew a knife from bis pocket. *nd tbruit it several times into Chas. Be ne«t attacked Robert Johnson, stabbed him in the back and ahoomau, and then struck at Patrick McDonongh inSieiing an incised wound ou bis right thigh, soma eight inches in length, when he escaped from the fiend with his as sociates. Tbe whole transaetion was the work of a moment. When tbe knife was drawn, the deceased called out "watch," ani after he was stabbed, sung out that lie was murdered, and lis companions were stabbed when they came to bis assistance, while the others fled. Charles A. Livingston, a private watchman, heard the cries of murder, and im&ediately after rapping for assistance, repaired t# tbe spot and saw a portion of the transsction. He attempted ti arrest the infu riated man, but it was with great difficulty tbat he escaped witb his own life, after defending himself against tbe knife for a wbole block, breaking his club to over tbe man, who vowed a determi natiou to kill blm.
