The tele graph between Fredericksburg and Washington was working so badly last night that we were una ble to receive oar usual dispatches, and therefore are without the latest returns: Manassas Gap Railroad.—The annual meet ing of the stockholders of the Manassas Gap Rail road, was held in Alexandria, Thursday. From the statements in the reports of the officers, we loam that the road cost 04,600,000, of which $1,- 800,000 is yet to be recaived from a mortgage ioan i and and individual subscription. The re ceipts of the road last year were $1,116,786 1)6, and the disbursements $1,110,424 52. The net earnings of the road for the past year amount to $38,943 12. Steamer Texas.—The steamship Texas, from Nicaragua via New Orleans bound to New York, with a large number of p&ssengera, went into Nor folk, Vs., Monday, for coal, and anchored near Fort Norfolk. Fa+al Fire.—The gin house and cotton house of Dr. B. R. Jones, near Montgomery, Ala, was burnt on the 12lh Instant. Four negroes lost their lives in the ilames. Loss $180,000. Destructive Firk.—A correspondent of the Petersburg Democrat, writing from Boydton, Va., atates that a fire took place in that town, on Wed neaday, destroying the store house of Alfred Boyd, aaddlery of William H. Grafford, and the tailoring establishment. The entire loss i« estimated at $20,000. Snow —On Tuesday night last, snow fell in Harrisonburg, Va., to the depth of three inches. In Liberty, Bedford Co., and Christiansburg, Mont gomery, the same indication of winter appeared. John Roller, a prominent citizen ofßockingham, County r Va., died on Tuesday. Railway Demonstration.— A meeting of the citizens of Montreal, called by the Mayor, was held on Tuesday, to adopt measures for a proper celebration of the completion of the Orand Trunk Railway. Resolutions were passed in favor of a "grand demonstration," and it U proposed to raise the sum of (#40,000) The demonstration will take place about the iirst week in November. The Grand Trunk Railway engages to carry the invited guests free. The outline of the fete is not yet agreed upon, bat that it will be a grand one no one cau doubt. The sum of £2.500, ($10,000,) had been sub scribed on Thursday night towards the celebra tion. _____________ A Narrow Escape — Mr. Annstead M. Miller, of Loudoun county, Va., one day last week, was descending the mountain a short distance below Derry'a Store, on the Hillsborough and Harper's Ferry Tarnpike, and just as he was rounding the bend of the bill, his hoise became frightened, sprang suddenly back, throwing his rider from the saddle, and leaving him upon the brink of a preci pice, some 30 feet steep. The horse himself was precipitated to the ravine below, the result of which was instant death. Female wages are still very high in California — Advertisements in San Francuco paper* offer $60 a month, and $40 for a girl. A letter say*—"lt would astonish yon to see some of oar servant girls ia full rig in Montgomery street. Troops—A company of NU, 8. soldiers from Oswego, passed through this eity yesterday forenoon on their way to Florida. This company has occapted Fort Ontario, at Oswego, for the past two years; H is understood that their places will be filled with a company from Florida. Sev eral of the soldiers had their wives and children with them, and among the men were two desert ers with balls and chaing oa their legs. Syracuse Journal, Aug 14. Creditors' Mzetiku.—The first meeting of the creditors of Don aid McKay took place in Bos ton on Monday, and was numerously attended — C. T. Hubbard, Wm. rsge and B. *f. Clark were chosen assignees almost unanimously. Mr. Me Kay s liabilities when he failed amounted to $240,- 000 and his asset* $375,000, showing a balance in favor of $135,000; but this was mostly in real estate, and not immediately available.
