I<rfiae tateau and a aeetons advocate of £.*en. enterprise and tbe taproot and In crease of Southern manufactutee HU address will, we doubt not, be a most interesting and aj> P 'xi>e exhibition will be creditable to the me chanics—highly ao under the circumstances. Be- Me* the catalogue of articles more particularly Dertaining to their vocation*, are a number of vety curious things and others belonging to the fanciftil line. Tbe ladies have been especially liberal in their contributions, and there will ba a display, showing the wonderful patience, industry and taste which mark their handiwork. A grand attraction, however, of tbe great Hall where the Mechanics' Fair is held, is the renown «d picture of tbe School of Athens, copied most faithfully from Rafaelle's original- This picture was painted to the order of the Alumni of tM Uai varsity of Virginia, and is to.be presented by them to that institution of which Virginians are so justly proud. We had the gratification of aeeing it un rolled yesterday by Mr. Pratt, the agent of the purchasers, who has it in chargp It is a gloriot-s picture. The genius of Rafaelie has indeed pre sented the great philosophers of Athens iu forms fitting tbe great souls that inhabited them. It is a picture to be studied and admired always—one that we can never grow tired of and in which we can constantly discern new beauties. The Exhibition will continue for ten or more days, and we trust will ba liberally patronizsd by the public. The mechanics are struggling to es tablish the Institute permanently, believing that it will impart the most important benefits not only te their professions, but to the State at large. A just State pride should prompt every citizen to contribute something to help along the cause. The Quarterly Lsw Journal. Tbe Law Journal for October, 185ti, is a very valuable number. 1U chapter of contents embraces a great variety of subjects of decided interest to the legal professioo. The "Journal" has won high plaudits from distinguished professional sources.— It ought to be in the ba»ds of every lawyer. This excellent periodical is published in admira ble style by J- W. Randolph St Co. The editor, A. Guigon, Esq , is evincing much energy, talent and judgment in his Important post. Presbyterian SYNOD, NEW SCHOOL.—The Sy nod of Virginia.New School, met at Sheperdstown, Virginia, on the 9th, Rev. Mr. Read, of Richmond, Moderator, and Rev. Messrs. Eva, of Maryland, and Boyd, of Winchester, clerks. Rev. Mr. Sun derland, of Washington, preached the opening sermon. Caution to Steamboat Captains—Tbe steam, er Connecticut was caaght in the terrible storn on Long Island Sound, on Friday last, and upon brioging tbe life preservers out, in case they should have to be used, it was found that not over fifty were in serviceable condition. The rest were rendered incapable by tbe effects of tbe heat on tbe India-rubber daring tbe snmmer. Missionaries .—Among the passengers of the steamer City of Manchester, which sailed from Philadelphia on Thursday, were tbe Rev. R J. Dodds and lady; and the Rev. Jos. Beatty and lady of this city, of the Reformed Presbyterian Cbarch, and Rev. Guilan Lansing, of tbe Asso ciate Reformed Church, at Damascus in Syria, who go to commence a new mission, and aUo to rc-inforce an important one already established at that place. Naval. —Purser Thomas R. Ware has been ordered to the U. S. Receiving ship Pennsylvania, to relieve Parser John N. Hamilton, on Monday next. Sentenced to the Penitentiary—Ben Hughes, of Halifax county, Va., charged with killing one of his negroes, was tried last week, convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years' imprisonment in tbe penitentiary. Military—Hoa. Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War, Col. William 8. Harden, United States Army, and Professor W. 11. Bartlett, of the Mili tary Academy, West Point, arrived in Springfield Wednesday evening, on a visit to tbe U.S. Ar mory, Accident on the Central Ohio Railroad —An accident occurred on tbe Central Ohio Hail road, near Giencoe, about ten miles west of Bull Air, Ohio, on Friday morning last, by which sev eral persons were somewhat wounded, and con Blderable damage done to two trains of cars. It appears that an accommodation traia, which was turning off for the purpose of allowing a feight train in its rear to pass, accidentally left some of its hindmost cars upon tbe track by reasoa of the coupling breaking. Tbe passengers were warned of the approach of tbe freight train by those out side, and some of them managed to escape. Oth ers were less fortunate. The Wheeling Gazette says: The locomotive of the freight train rnn half way through tbe hindmost car of tbe accommodation, breaking it up to a great extent, and forcing the two ears which contained the passengers frjra the bridge upon which they had stopped to tbe east side of the ravine, over which the bridge was extended. A Mr. E. 81ocuiii belonging to Booker's opera troupe, bad his face cut and was otherwise injured. Mrs. M. J.Chambers of Indiana, had her face brtris edand received other slight injuries. Dr. Buckly, of'Zanesville, a passenger on the freight train, was hurt very badly by jumping from tbe train. He was left at Giencoe. A. brakesman on the same train was injured by a similar effort to escape what he considered certain death. A number of others were bruised and scalded, but so sligbtlv as to be scarcely worthy of remark. Among thern Gso. Brooke, of 81. Louis, and E (>. Neeland, of Gaiiena, 111. After these persons had received the neee»s*iy attention at Hell-Air they were brought to this ctty. The two passenger cars were completely demolished, so as to render them perfectly uselest. Tbe locomotive of the freight train was somewhat damaged. That all escaped with life seems almost a miracle. The Camels in Texas.—The Galveston News contains correspondence from Castroville, Medina county, Texas, dated I'Jth ult, from which we take the following interesting particulars in relation to the camels which have lately been imported there by the United States Government: I had also tbe pleasure of making tbe acquain tsnce of Major Wayne, for several years attached to tbe War Department in Washington City, wbo went out last year to Asia and introduced the cam els into this country, wbicb arrived at Indianola last spring, and are now kept at this post. It has been selected by him as tbe best adapted to that service for wbicb he intends them. The Herald of Sat urday says : Ha was arrested ou Thursday night, In a farm bouse, about 10 miles back of Newhurg, Orange county, New York, by two of the United State* Deputy Marshals, And waa conveyed to the El dridge street Jail, in this city, on Frtdsy, where he now remains iu close custody. Carpentier was dressed la the disguise of a farmer, and was direst ed of hU moustache when the officers succeeded Ir arresting him. The fugitive was captured "hll<> asleep in bed. much to his surprise and mortifica tion. His captors wUI receive the promised re ward of $1,000, effered by Belmont's agent In this city for the apprehension of the prisoner- No mo ney or property of toy conieqaenw wm found in the possession of the fugitive. Carpentler expresses great astonishment at toe adroit manner In which his capture waa effected. He says be did not tell auy one where he was go ing when he left New York, but on tbe contrary, hinted that be was going to Philadelphia, when his intention really was to secrete himself in the interior of this State until a favorable opportunity might present itself for his escape. He proceeded on board the Eria railroad ears, and (retting off some dist nee from Newburg, wended bis way into the interior, and th«re hired himself out to a farmer at a very small compensa tion per month. As we said before, he was fast asleep when the officers made their appearance at his bedside, and summoned him to pnt on his clothing and prepare for a journey to New York. He was greatly non plussed, and at first denied that his name was Carpentier, but the presence of a photograph of the prisoner's made all denials useless. Tbe officers conveyed their prisoner across the river in a boat, and took tbe Hudson River Rail road cars for this city, where they arrived withont any obstacle. The appearance of Carpentier was oomew hat novel. He was dressed in coarse far mer's clothing, and although be tried to divest himself of everything that might serve to betray him, yet there were unmistakeabie signs of the polished gentleman about tbe man whenever the observer chose to scrutinize his personal appear ance and mode of carriage. The prisoner says that he has arrived iu this country quite poor, and has hardly as much money as would defray the expenses of a journey to Europe and back. His story iu relation to the fraud upon the Northern railway varies but little from that of Crelet. . Fatal Accident—lron for the Virginia and Tcnneuu Railroad—Cold Wtatktr—Rtligwus Molten. Yours. SENEX. Fire at the Western Lunatic Asylum. CORRESPONDENCE OF THE DISPATCH. Staunton, October 19tb, 1856. I deeply regret having so soon again to ask a space in your columns, to apprise the community that another fire has occurred at the Western Lu natic Asylum. About 9 o'clock last night, a small detached building, containing fifteen male patients, was discovered to be on fire in the attic. Tbe pa tients were promptly removed to places of secu rity, without the slightest injury to any one, and tbe fire was extinguished without other material damage to the building than the destruction of the roof.
