This Fair bw been thu» far successful beyotd the expectation of the members of the Institute; and the prospect I* that it will be mo»t liberally encouraged. The display of article* is very flue, and the room is well packed. The throng of vtei tors for the last three nights has been as dense as it eoald well be without making the room uncomforta ble, and was in a large degree componcd of our most iuteiligent citizens. The scene was indeed a very grand on*. Standing at the entrance to the Hall, apd looking at the four columns of ladies and gen tlemen filing through the rows of exhibition, the # -walls decorated with gay colored fabrics and paint' ings, and the farther end of the room being graced by the splendid picture of the School of Athena, a view at once varied and grand, is presented to the eye. It is richly worth a visit to look upon this scene—while the curious in Mechanics, the lover of art, may find hours and days of study in . the Exhibition. We urge oar citiisens, one and all, to go and be gratified by this fine exhibition, and at the same time help out the noble cause the Mechanics are endeavoring to push ahead. The Agricultural Fair. We cannot now speak with confidence about the number of people the Fair of next week will like ly attract to our city. The number of passengers from the South Side and West yesterday evening Was large, and we suppose gentlemen are coming early to be comfortably quartered before the crowd comes. The entries for the exhibition are fair.— We learn that there are eighty horses entered, and 'that th* ahow of these noble animals will be very fine. We hope there will be a large attendance of the farmers. The means for their accommodation ' are more extensive than formerly, and as usual, the private dwellings will be ready to accommo. date all who cannot find room in the Hotels. Horace Gkkklky Ixdicted—Wa learn from the Clarksburg, Va, Register that at the recent term of the Harrison Circuit Court, the grand jury found about seventy indictments. Of these one was against Horace Greeley for circulating in Harrison county his "Tribune," which wa* con. eidered by tbe grand jurors as incendiary in Its character. Two citizens of the county were pre sented for aiding in the circulation of that print. Thk Tehuantepec Route.—The brig Judge Btaney sailed from N. Y. a few days since for the Coatscolcos, loaded with materials for the construc tion of the Tebuantepee carriage road. Two ves sels had previously been dispatched; but the con traetor finding labor so abundant, sent for more tools. The probability is that this route will be opened in January next. DEAD. —Rev. Albert L Holladay, a clergyman itt the Presbyterian church, and recently elected President of Hampden Sydney College, died is Albemarle county, Virginia, on Snnday last. He was * man of eminent piety, and few equalled him in hi* scholastic attainments. During the first par l of his ministry, he was a Missionary to Persia' bat for several years past has resided in that coun ty and had charge of the South Plains Presbyte rian church. Our COCNTRT and its Prospicts.—Some in teresting facts are recapitulated in the United States Military Argns. It is stated that the popu. lation of the eleven infant colonies in 1701 was 862 000 souls. Georgia and Delaware were added to the number about 1749, and the census reports give as 1, Iu the year 1775, the thirteen colonies had 2,303,000 whites and 500,000 slaves.— After the adoption of the present Constitution, in 1790, there were thirteen States, with 3,172,664 whites, 50,456 free celored, and 697,807 slaves. In » . „ 1850, the States bad increased to thirty-one, and the population to 19 550,000 whites, 434,000 free celored, and 3 204,000 slaves. The total popula tion at this -time is approaching thirty miUiont The number of electoral votes is 296, requiring 149 to elect a President by tbe people. The free States have 176. and tbe slave 120. Tbe day the exhibition was opened to tbe pub lic $502 was taken in at the gate, independent of free aud members of the Society. The premiums will be awarded to morrow, the judges having al ready derided on the merit* of tbe several article* submitted for examination. Nothing of more than ordinary interest occurred to day except tbe trial of ploughs. This came off at 3 o'clock, and vari ous descriptions of th« article were used much skill displayed Among the curiosities may be mentioned a tea pot used by Dr. Franklin, deposited by Wm H. Davis of Chesterfield. The identity of this an cient piece of crockery is well established. In Octagoa Hall, Mr. Daniel Wilson had aoae very tine specimens of oak graining. Breese, Knee land & Co . of Newark, N. J., exhibited an engine with sundry mcdern improvements, which as a specimen of useful mechanism will compare fa vorably with any machine. It simplifies the working of a locomotivo in an essential degree. lathe agricultural department, might beaten an extensive assortment of Ploughs, Peg Rollers, Corn Plauters, Rakes, Coulters, Cob Crashers, Mowers and Reapers, and many other useful arti cles for aiding labor. Most of these were deposi ted by Messrs. Baldwin &. Branch &. Son, Church &: Brother, and Sinclair & Co. the last named of Baltimore. The display of poultry is quite creditable Every kind is ou band, from a gigantic Sbanghae to a diminutive Bantam. In the vegetable line, there are numerous specimens of fresh green peas, large radishes, turnips, cab bages, ecg plants, and indeed of every kind of ve getable iadiginous to tbe soil. The people seemed to be busily engaged in mix ing in, making acquaintances and enjoying them selves In looking at tbe sights—that is the honest portion. During the dsy Mrs Wm C Butler was robbed of $400 by one of the light fingered gentry, in passing out of Octagon Hall. Her husband htd given her the amount for safe keeping, and she to make assurance doubly sure, put it in her pocket, and secured it, as she thought,by pinning it in. She was rudely pushed against by a young man wbile leaving Octagon Hall, and pausing for a moment to lookat him she forgot the purse. On getting through the crowd the young gent was not visible, and it was found on examination that her pocket had boen cut (as also a parasol) by some sharp instru ment. The money was missing. The individual noticed by Mrs B was youthful in appearance, and wore a slouch felt hat What makes the case peculiarly hard, is tbe fact that the money was the accumulated savings of several years' labor, and Mr. B. and his lady de signed leaving the city for tbo West in a few da'y. Another lady was robbed of $90 in a similar man ner on Wednesday. The mention of these occur rences will show yon that pick-pockets are abroad, aud it would be well for your folks during the com ing week to look well to their pockats, at some of tLe-ic gentry will doubtless pay you a professional visit. A number of tbe friends of tbe turf from your city attended tbo New Market Course to-day, to witness the contest between Sebastopol and Frank fort. Rarely has there been more interest mani fested on such an occasion, or a larger attendance of all classes on the field. When the horse* first appeared, the betting was about even ; next it run iu favor of Sebastopol, and finally be wat the favorite in the ratio of five to one, and in some instances (after tho first heat; of twenty to one — The purse was $800, four mile heat*. The Circuit Court of this county (Judge John W. Nash presiding) commenced its session to-day. There is but one case docketed which excites much curiosity anions the citizens as to the denoument. This is the trial of Moses Stratton for the murder of Col. Henry P Miller, in August last. Ajnry was sworn, and the prisoner (who is a young mau of good appearance) was arraigned today, and plead "not guilty." The trial will probably occupy three or four days, the prisoner's friends having engaged sev eral lawyers to conduct bis defence, and the inter ests of the Commonwealth being cared for by three gentlemen of well known legal attain ments With their aid all the facts bearing on the guilt or innocence of the accused will doubtless be elicited from the witnesses. The prisoner pleads self-defence in justification. The circum stance attending the homicide (as intimated to me) are as follows : Stratton was the overseer for Miller and had reason to suspect him of im proper advances to his wife He made this the subject of a communication to M. During the conversation both parties got angry a dispute, and finally a sctffle or fight between the two ensued, in the progress of which M. re ceived one or more pistol shot wounds, which caus> ed his death. How far Stratton was justified in regarding.M. as a violator of his domestic felicity the evidence will doubtless Show. Messrs. Alexander Jones, (Commonwealth's At torney,) Hon. R K Meade, of Petersburg, and W. C, Flournoy, of Prince Edward county, appear for the State. For the prisoner, Messrs August, Flournoy snd Poindexter, of Richmond, Hon. H. L. Hopkins, of Powhatan, and V. D. Markham, of Chesterfield. Four Eyes. Richmond, Va., October 11th, 1855. BTI bave examined the prospectus of Lou'* Aozsanyi, Esq., for kis Riding School in the city < f Richmond, and commend his plan to all who desiie to practice the art of commanding the horse. He follows the system of Bnuober, the celebrated cavalry trainer of France, whose work was translated by Jno. Sergeant, Esq ,of Philadelphia. I have witnessed the effects of training riders and horses under that system, in Philadelphia, have conversed mnch with the translator, and read tbe book, and I may safely assure the public of Virginia that it is considered the most perfect system of riding known in either Eu rope or America. The Krenoh Consul, Mr. Paul, has introduced Mr Rozsanyl to me with tbe highest com mendation of him at a rota and at amt'terof hia art. I troat that he will aeaure auch a patronage of hia achool aa to form a delightful mgwum of eter ciae for the ladiaa and gentlemen of Richmond.
