The mails by the Europaare received, buteor. tain mo newa of importance beyond what haa bean telegraphed The following are Item* of interest: The aeconnta of the recent earthquake In Egypt wera exaggerated. At Cairo, however, math alarm waa felt. Among other incidenta, Mile, lta chel rnthed from the bonae in her night dreas. Advieea from the Cape of Good Hope to August ■ji, report busines* very dull, provisions dear, mo ney acarce, and another Caffre war threatening A meeting of the Turkish Missions Aid Society waa held in Exeter Hall, London, for the purpose of taking leave of tho Rev. Dr. C. Hamlin, who is returning to the scene of his minsionary labors io the East. Hon. and Rev. B. W. Noel, seconded by Rev. W. Bagnall, moved a resolution recognis ing the elevated exertions of the American mis sionaries among the Armenians. The meeting then terminated. Admiral Sir Charles Napier lias written an un usually temperate reply to Sir Robert Peel's after dinner speech in which he taxed the veteran Ad miral with something very like cowardice. Col- Tarr, whose arrest by the Austrian* may be remembered, has been refused a passport to Con stantinople by Lord Clarendon. Mr. William Brown, M P, of Liverpool, who some time since offered the munificent donation of £6 000 toward* the erection of buildings for a fre library and museum, offers to double the amount cf his gift, provided the building be commenced im mediately. The liabilities of Fox Si Henderson, the con tractors, Is £350,000—half unsecured. The London Times strongly dissuades capitalists, from investing in the Russian railway concessions. The railways conceded are 3,500 miles, requiring forty millions sterling of capital The British government has presented a gold chronometer with this inscription : "Presented by the British government to Captain Champion, of the American ship Victoria, for his generous and prompt assistance to the British bark Rose, 15th October, 185ti." At a Court of Common Council of the city of Loudon, the Lord Mayor informed the Court that he bad received from the city of Boston Mass, two books published by the Corporation of Boston, and presented to the Corporation of the city of Loudon He (the Lord Mayor) had already written to the Mayor of Boston, expressing thanks for the gift Mr. Deputy Dakin bad pleasure in moving that the present be accepted and deposited in the library; for it was gratifying to see across the Atlantic the reflex of those institutions which had contributed so much to English greatness. The motion was seconded and carried by acclamation. The Lord Mayor of London has remitted a further sum of '5.000 francs for relief of the suf ferers by the recent inundations in France, mak ing a total contribution from London of 850,000 francs Harrison, the English wizard, who figured in the trial of Dove, the poisoner, ha 6 been committed to prison, at Leeds, as a rogue and vagabond. Jules Gerard, the lion tamer, has been robbed of 70 000 francs, confided to him by a friend to buy land in Algeria Execution is Mississippi—Unusual Seen*.— - William Roberson, who murdered Franklin Wil liams, with the aid of the murdered man's wife, was exeeuted at Holmesville, Miss., on the Bth Inst. The Independent says: The prisoner was returned j to the jail of tbia county, from that of Amite, at the hour of 10 o'clock in the morning of the day ol execution, and about IP.M., was taken thence and placed upon the scaffold, which wa* erected just outside the Jail, on the public square. He stepped from the outer stairway of the jail, upon the scaffold, in his usual attire, and in a very self complacent manner proceeded to address the crowd in his own justiti cation. He spoke to the crowd about two hours, in a vary unconnected manner—endeavoring to awaken the sympathies of the crowd in bis bebalt, and closed his long and very incoherent harangue with an appeal to them to manifest a desire that he should be remanded to jail and have anew trial, in furtherance of which he requested those In favor of his proposition to stand aloof from the crowd, as he felt assared the Sheriff would not proceed with the execution, if the popular senti went shonld be found to be against it. The appa rent acquiescence of the Sheriff to this startling and unusual proceeding stirred the crowd to an exhi bition of some little excitement, and cries of " new trialhang him!"' "hang bim !" were heard on both sides, and for a moment we feared mob law would run riot around the very precincts of our courts of justice. The announcement of the Sheriff, however, made to the prisoner, that he eonld expect nothing from the people, ia this emergency, however much hj|own or their sym pathies were evinced for him, and his proceeding at once with his duty accordingly, quelled the rising tumult, and it was not until this moment that the prisoner appeared to look death in the fa.se. Hia cheek blanched—his frame shookVith tremor—his limbs trembled, and ha fell upon his kneea and buried bis face in his hands, while the attending minister, Dr. Laney, approached him upon the scaffold, in performance of his last sad duty, and kneeling beside the prisoner, with his hand upon his bowed bead, and sent up in his be half an impressive appeal to heaven. After this solemn service, the prisoner continued upon his knees, until the Sheriff, finding the laat hour of the time allotted him for the execution, fait ex piring, aroused him to his feet, placed the cap over hia tace, and in another instant the rope sup porting the platform was eut, letting the prisoner down below the heads of the people, and witbiu a few inches of the ground, where the body hung aome fifteen or twenty minutes, when it was cut own. Difficulties at Naplks —a correspondent of the New ork Journal of Commerce, writing from the United States Squadron, at Genoa, on the iHrth October, says: "Be not surprised to hear of troubles with the Western powers. Our squadron is constantly on the qui tire. The Constellation hurried to Naples a week or two ago—and the Congress followed a day or two afterwards. The common talk is of revolution. The Susquehanna is at Spezia. She has been a regular tug for the Congress and Com modore, ever since she has been on the station The rumor is that she will winter here, aud we are all expecting to have a jolly time of it " Si't-n.
