Five per son*—Era*ln* Corning and E. Deleyan, of Albany Charles Butler, of New York ; Geirit Smfeh, of Madison county, and Dr. Nott, of Bhenectady, gave $1,000 each. The whole amount was expended in the publication of Temperance papers and other document*. Suit against a Kaii.koai> —La*t week, Albert W. I'age brought a suit against the New \ ork Central Railroad, for violation of contract In re filling to convey him to Lyon*, New York, for which place he had purchased a ticket, and for for cibly ejecting him from a railroad car, because he refused to pay additional fare. Damages Jaid at $5,000. Ttie jury gave him a verdict of #175. The shortest passage between Boston and Ilali fa*, by a sailing vessel, ha* been made by the Halifax, which left Boston on the 17th inst She made the passage in thirty bours, which is several hours shorter than the average run of the Cunard steamers. So says the Boston Daily Advertiser. A man with a large family was complainicg of tbe difficulty of supporting tbein all. "But," said a friend, "you have sons big enough to earn some thing for you now."' "The difficulty is, they are too big to work." was the answer. The Oldest Senator —The death of Mr. Clay ton has very naturally directed attention to the members of the United States Senate, and to the point of seniority. Mr Crittenden, of Kentucky, is now the "Father" of that distinguished body, having entered it on the 4th of March, 1817. PaosißLE Origin or thb Times Hoax.—A cor respondent of the Savannah Republican furnishes tbe following probable solution of the Arrowsmith Heax on the London Times. After detailing his im pression that Mr. Arrowsmith intended his publica tion as a hoax, the correspondent says : "Suspecting one of the Mail Agents, between Au gusta and Columbus, of having a hand in it, and meeting him shortly after the appearance of the sto ry in tbe American papers, I accused him of mysus pieiom, when lie staled to mo that be had amused an idle hour, ia fabricating the story, and getting into couversation with an Englishman who was passing over tin route ou the subject of Southern atrocities, i e id him his effort. "The traveller requested the copy of the story, which he gave him, without suspicion of the use that would be made of it, aud ycu may imagine his asto nishment ss well as amusemeut, when it made its appearance in the Times, as a true and genuine scene, ai witnessed by the acute Mr. Arrowsmith, en his passage from Macou to Augusta " Senator Douglas and his Bride.—Senator Douglas and his beautiful bride occupied a prosceni um box at the opera last night. They wero accom panied by the bridal party, consisting of Miss Allen aud Miss Granger, aud by Gen. Shields, Augustus Sehall, and ex-Canal Commissioner Mather. Mrs Douglas was attited in a rather high-necked blussiik drees, with a blue satin amiped trimmed with lace.— Her hair was not, as is said to be usual, thrown in a braid round her clasnic forehead, but disposed after the fashion of the Empress Eugenie. She leaned over occasionally to look at the stage, apparently un conscious of the general battery of lorgnettes to which she was exposed. The Senator looked un commonly well and cheerful. He was sprucely cos tumed, snd evidently enjoyed both the opera and his own condition. The scene in Trovatore, in which Leonora (La Grange) and Manrico (Brignoli) petson ate the characters of bride and btidegroom, was re garded with special attention. Senator Douglas and Lis bride will shortly visit his mothsr. at Clifton *prings, in this State. They are now staying at the St. Nicholas.-xY. V. Post.
