We repeat that the Co*tom I loose statistics do no- exhibit Virginia in the proper light. A very large portion of the tobacco and fl jur exported to foreign couutries, from this port, goes through tho preliminary of coastwise shipment to a North em port, there to take the foreign-bound vessels • and, With regard to tobacco, certainly without changing owaer*. Her sister States of the South have the advantage of her that they are farther taiy from those Northern ports, and the coa»t wtee shipment not so convenient or cheap; there fore their exports depart directly from their bar bars. Virginia, in truth, stand* more likely at the head of the exporting States. When the James River and Kanawha Canal is finished, she will so •tand on the tables of the Custom House, with the exemption of New York, which is the exporter for nearly half the Vuion. That Canal will bring so large an amount of domestic produce to the A ir «inla ports for shipment abroad that ships will find ready cargoes here.aud will here come to seek «a»ployment. The Iljuatrtoua Dead It was a reproach to Virginia in forrnei d*ys that so Uttle had been d)na in marble or on c«u« van to rontuemorate the fame of tho mighty deal. It was noi until a late period that even a rode healstone marked the resting placo of the il lustrious Madison. This stain upon her escutcheon Virginia has recently washed off. A haudsome monument has been erocied there by order of the Virgin!* Legislature. The Virginia Washington Monument, reflects glory on the Present as well as the Past of Virginia. The removal of President Monroe's remains to Virginia, and tho proposition to build over his grave an enduring memorial showed that Virginia is determined to guard with reverent gratitude the ashes of her mighty det<J, •nd was the occasion of an outburst of nation# 1 patriotism and harmony that linked Virginia more closely than ever to her sister States, aud showed that we are yet a uuited people. Hut, though much has been done to manifest her affectiouate loyalty to the memory of her great men, the graves of ssme of her most dis tinguished sons still remain without a suitable monument to mark their burial place. It has been suggested, and we trust the suggestion will he remembered, and at no distant day carried into effect, that measures should be taken to obtain the consent of the surviviug relatives of other Vir ginia Presidents and other illustrious men of 'he Revolutionary era to the beautiful aud com manding eminence in Hollywood Cemetery, where the body of President Monroe is now deposited- It is not necessary that this removal should beac rompanied with unnecessary pomp and expense, but the State could well affjrd to make a small appropriation to erect a monument over each, simple, elegant and durable, like that of President Monroe. We should then have in Hollywood al". that is mortal of .Jefferson, Madison and Monroe, protected from neglect and profanation, and n;a» king a spot more hallowed and venerated ia the eyes of America than Westminster Abbey. To this consecrated ground, pilgrims might come from every portionof the vast Republic, and replenish the ares of patriotism at these holy shrines, aud renew upon them the vows oi love and fidelity to liberty and the Union. Mormonism This absurd imposture is now lbi(fy-ooe years old. Joe Smith, its inventor, had no hesitation in its early days, in admitting in private ihat Htohe an imposture. On one occasion, wbilo the Mormou temple was in Ohio, he confessed to Mr. WiUoo, a lawyer of Cleveland, (now Judge Wil« on of the U. S. District Court for Northern Ohio,) t it wns a humbug, and defended it on the und that, iu his opinion, all religions were mbugs, and that he had us good a right asany» <ly else to avail himself of popular credulity bad this from Judge Wilson's own lips. The te J. Washington Smith, former Graud Master of lie Grand Lodge of Virginia, informed us that Joe admitted the same thing substantially to him. At the same time, there is no doubt that most of Joe Smith's followers were honest in their delusiou, as the sacrifice* they made <?f comfort and even of property, abundantly prove. The revelation of I'olygamy to the Saints is comparatively recent, not having been publicly proclaimed till I&>3, though they weie suspected both of the theory and practice before that time. I tah wa* recog nized by the Federal Government as a Territory in 1850, and Brighaiu Young appointed Governor by Mr. Fillmore, an appointment which was re. newed undw the administration of Gen. Tierce.— It isnot much credit to the boasted enlighteument of the age and country that such a superstition ihould attain such a growth in the nineteenth centary and in the United States of America — Most oi its deluded votaries are, however, from foreign countries. The masj of them are sincere, bat the leaders are canning rogues, like Joe Smith, who make the credulity of the supersti. tioas their stock in trade. Brigbam Young, the present head of the Mormons, is a man of conside. rable administrative capacity, and is said to have made a handsome fortune out of Mormouisro. Faith in the Union. If there is anything in the political coudnct of that admirable journal, the National Inleliiy ncer, which mast challenge the unqualified admiration of both its party Iriends and foea, it is its UUi •hrloklng and unwavering faith in the preaerva tion of the Union. In ita whole coarse upon the aftitating sectional questloo* of the day, it has proved itself national in spirit at well as in name, and in nothing more so than IU elevation above the fears which alarm ao many minds, as well a* the pasiiou* which agitate *o many breaaW, in re farence to the preservation of the Union. Never despair of the Republic," i« a maxim which guides its discussion* of all the exciting topics of the day. Too many of our public j Jamais and of our public man expreas apprehensions on this subject which tend to cmts the danger they would avert. Ev»o masse* of men in the two sections should be discontented and anxiom for separation, the impoaeiblllty of separation in aoy way or shape that would remove the causes of their discontent •till remain*, and like a dissatisfied couple, living under law* which do uot permit divorce, th»y wttl find it wiser to relioqnith tbeir resentments and live together in peace than gall their neck* in perpetual discord under a yoke which they cannot brsak. If any man will take a map of the Uuited State* and ahow how It is to be divided upon tbe slavery question—tbe only question that threatens disunion—and what is to be done with tbe Missis sippi river and tbe great valley which draius it, we snail be able to form some idea of tbe process of patting asunder that which the God of Nature bath joined together. We ought to consider Dis union an impossibility, and have faith enough in the Constitution, and tbe common sense and pa triotism of the American people, to feal aura that •vary interest and every right of tba State* and tbecitiivn is Ufa under the wgla of our free and constitutional government. Orjgin of Agricultural Associations- It is stated in "Phelps' History of Progress'' that the first associations of farmers appear to have beeu those for mutual assistance ia the ap. preheuMou and persecution of thieves; and as they occasionally met for the prosecution of these ob jects, they talked of their crops and flocks, and thus they gradually cirne to enlarge the objects of their clubs. Judging from the number of pick pockets at the Agricultural Fairs, the farming as» sociations have not yet been successful in their primary object.
