A Uetie*«le»>l Poet.
The ooet IV*. O. Hhvast, who edits theN.
x- r «f !'•->«», isinaViaghimself merry over
ih« deeds of violence and murder at Harper s
I * trust that the excellent humor
into Which these tragical events have put this
unviable and benevolent person, will dispel
Ttermanentlv the dejection and apprehension
which he has'suffered from having Mich a
neighbor as Mrs. BtBOXLL OC>V»oham
»!-]„. juiet occupies a tine house with a brown*
stone front, In one of the fashionable avenues
of New York, and in a modest two-story
br.ck next door, is the famous Mrs. CrSKIKO
h am. whose trial for abolishing l>r. lit uuki.l
made a good deal of noise at the time,—
The poet has been excessively annoyed by
having such a neighbor, and left no stone
unturned to have her removed. Hut a*
Mr*. Ov 2i y 1 Noli AM pays her rent with un
deviating punctuality, it has been found
difficult to eject lier, and #0 the poet has to suf
fer all the horrors of eating by day and sleep
ing by night with only a thin partition be
tween him and a suspected murderess.
Yet this delicate sprig of puritan piety and
poetic sensibility rejoices and makes himself
merry over the tragic scenes of blood and
crime at Harper's Ferry ! What consistency !
What conscience! What humanity! How
would you like a touch of this abolition at
your own d x>rs 1 How would you like, oh !
poet, in the dark and solemn midnight, to see
the "drapery of your couch" withdrawn, and
Mrs. Hi ki>xllCvxmn«iiam peering in,armed
with one of those devilish-looking jukes man
ufactured in Connecticut, and which now af
fords you so much merriment f Would you
not laugh the other side of your mouth .'
This flue sport of throwing stones at the
frogs—sport to alwlition editors, though it i*
death to others—will not continue long. If
they are determined on exciting insurrection
and civil war, let them bear in mind a fact
which they may learn any day by consulting
theirewn neighbors and acquaintances, that
the baitle will begin in their own streets.—
There are tens of thousands ol loyal and
brave men in the North, who, when the crisis
comes, will go down into the streets, and try
conclusions with the abolitionists, bayonets to
bayonets and heart to heart. Hut abolitionists
will never stand such a trial. If they could
once be made to feel that it is inevitable; if
such men as U-reei.ev of the Tribune, Bryant
of the Post, and others, whoare as timid in ac
tion as they are furious in speech, could be
made to realize that the civil war which they
are laboring to bring about w ill begin in the city
of New York, and involve their own precious
persons, their printing houses, their private
residences, and their own wives and children,
they would cultivate caution and charity, in
stead of sowing broadcast the seeds of servile
and civil commotion. That such will be the
case, no one who knows the state of sentiment
among the Northern people can doubt. The
conservative men of the North will fight the
battles of the Constitution at their own doors,
and they who ha\e sown the wind will reap
the whirlwind.
The Fair.
A visit, yesterday, to the Fair Grounds, left
us with the impression that there are not as
many people at the present exhibition as on
former grounds. In tins, however, we may he
mistaken, the grounds being so much larger
than thijse formerly occupied, that the same,
or even a larger crowd, would not make as
great a show. The plan of exhibition is one of
the finest, best arranged, and most spacious in
the country. Strangers from oiher States
pa«s high commendations upon the grounds
and the arrangements for the reception of
stock, and for every purpose connected with
the Fair. The ground of Lhe trotting course is
admirably adapted for that purpose. A horse
who could not make good time on that soil,
might as well retire from public life. There
are more horses at this Fair than we have ever
seen on any previous occasion, some of them
very fine. Some of the cattle are the fattest
and handsomest of their kind we ever saw.—
In a very hasty examination, we were much
etruck with the variety and beauty of the fan
cy work in the ladies' department, and in the
vegetable tent we saw "some pumpkins," as
well as other monster vegetables, which we
recommend to the inspection of the curious.
Safety of our Public Armories.
The recent seizure of Harper's Kerry by a
small band of white men and negroes, has
drawn attention to the safety of our public ar
mories and forts, and has elicited the fact that
there is not a single regiment of regular sol
dierson theentire Atlantic and Gulf seaboard.
The New York Herald says there are but two
companies at Fort Hamilton to protect New
York harbor, owe company at Hoston, one just
returning from Newport to the West, two
companies at Charleston, one at Key West,
and eight companies of recruits at the artillery
school at Fortress Monroe. The immense forti
fication constructing on the Dry Fortugas,
which has already cost millions of dollars,
stands alone in the centre of a thousand miles
of unguarded coast, with not a hundred sol
diers to guard it, if it were menaced. Within
eighty miles of this great work, designed,
nays the New York lleruld, to be the Gibraltar
of the Gulf of Mexico, the (Japtain-General of
Cuba has twenty thousand disciplined troops
and twenty-five steamships-of-war, which in
eeven hours would enable him to take the for- j
tress,'and to keep'it for months and perhaps
years. The subject certainly deserves the early
attention of Congress.
Address of Hun. IS. \V. Miller. To-night.
We hope that a large number of our citi
zens, and of the many strangers in the city,
Will attend at the African Church on the oc
casion of Mr. Miller's eloquent oration, to
night. It will be a rich and rare treat.—
Having ourselves, on oue occasion, heard Mr.
Miller, we can say, with contidence, that no
oue will be disappointed. As the object is to
increase the fuuds of the Mount Vernon As
sociation, we cannot, for a moment, doubt that
an intelligent and appreciative audience will
reward the gifted orator for the time and
trouble which he has cheerfully sacrificed at
the request of the Committee of the Associa
tion. The price of tickets is 50 cents. They
can be obtained at the depot of the Richmond
and Fredericksburg Company, during the day,
and at the door of the Church this evening.
The Presidency in England.
The London T'lsgraph gravely states that
among the most prominent candidates in tie
United States for the Presidency, is Stkimikn
A. iJoroi.AH, a black man, who, for many
years, has conducted an abolition and eman
cipation newspaper with signal success. We
should think that Mr. Sbwakd, wiio is now
in England, might keep his abolition friends
In that country better posted upon American
politics. Perhaps, when the Hsrix-r « terry
news arrives, he will be able to tell the Lon
don Telegraph who Jobs Heowh is. Or per
haps not. Maybe be never heard of such a
person as OiuwiTOHti Ilhow>, and will !*•
very much shocked when the tidings of his
evil doings reaches England.
Col. Davis.
Col. J. Lucius Davis, of Henrico, who is
placed in command ot the troops at Charles,
town, is just the man for the position. Col.
Davie is a graduate of West Point, an accom.
plished and experienced cavalry officer, a
vigilant and gallant soldier. There will be no
renewal of an attempt to invade any portion
of the soli which te assigned *> the gdardian
shipof CM. Davis; or,should there be it will
he met la precisely the wanner that every
Virginian, eepecially i., the present temper of
the State, would de»ire it to be met.
Colonel Duryee.
We are pleased to learn that a large number
of the principal merchants of New York are
getting up a splendid testimonial tor presen
tation to ex-Colonel AaaAM Dirtii, the lat*
Commandant of thoMew York 7th Regiment,
ae a fitting acknowledgment of his eminent

Military Advantage* ot Railroads.
One of the most important lessons taught by
the late invasion of Harper's Ferry, is the fact
that, in twenty-four hours, troops can be con
gregated from a distance of 150 or vJOUmiles: e.t
a moment's notice, cannon and military stores
transported, and an invasion crushed and it*
leaders shot or captured. Before the intro
duction of railroads and telegraphs, Brown
might have held jwssession of the Arsenal for
weeks, and even months, before be could have
l»cn dislodged. Now, as the Philadelphia
Ledger observes, such are the advantages of
lailroads and telegraphs, though builtciitiie.y
for the purposes of peace, that in an instant
they place all military and volunteer forces,
within a hundred and llfty miles, in such
proximity as this to the seat of war-Cabinet
Council." are assembled—military officers sum
moned troops gathered by telegraph and con
veved by steam to the seat of war, with a ce
lerity inconceivable fifty years ago.
•• All this," remarks the IMger. "multiplies the
power of a small army of well disciplined men. it

all. their powers are fir more favorable for defen

object. The true wav to make a nation strong tor

It is to be hoped that the next Legislature of
Virginia will complete a system ot railways,
and thus develop the wealth, and provide for
the security, of the State.

of the death ol Sir Robert Stephenson, the
great English engineer, in the 50th year of his
age. He commenced life as an apprentice in a
factory where steam engines were made, ami

sumed its own smoke, weighed only six tons,
and drew 20 tons at the rate of 10 miles an
hour. For this work he received a prize of
S-2,000. He then commenced building railroads,
and all the principal lines in England, Bel
