Let ate tall yon n secret. Most things yea ace la the newspapers, under the head of " Tales,'* or --Stories," you set down as—to use a i lain word—lies. You ere mistaken.— Ia alnety-nlne cases out of a hundred, these newspaper tales are based upon fact—actual persoaal experience—with last enough altera, tlou in the circumstances narrated to render the tdeatity of persona and of places a mat. ter of doubt, and just so mud of exaggeration la the style and coloring as will serve to make the story enticing. Now, what lam about to tell yon, actually happened in this very world in which yen and I now live, and in a part of It with which, 1 dure say, the moat of you are pretty well acquainted. The events detailed may have happened to my self, or to some other person. Decide for yourself who tbe hero is. Fifteen years ago last summer, Bob Ander son—then a tolerably promising youth, but who subsequently died of ibe effects of his Ticious indulgences -said to John Tinner— "John, let's go and see Willie Lamar .'" "Confound Willie Lamar,-' said Tauner, " I don't want to see him. If be wants to see me, let him come." Jobn Tanner, aged 'il or 24, stout-built, swar thy, darh-eyed, food of dissipation, was leaa promising tban bis comrade. He had a repu tation for being smart; but people, looking at hla past career, predicted that his smartness would be the ruin of him. But, happily for John, the race of prophets is dead. The last time 1 heard from him he was doing well—so well that I doubt uot many of his old school. mates and companions in a thousand frolics unvy htm bis position before tbe world. Mo. ted; Iron't give a boy up because he is a little wild. - Nor is it right to envy nny man bia place. Many a reputation which has increas ed steadily until midd-e-age, when the theory la that tbe character is established, has sudden ly gone down In darkness and in shame. " Why, hang it all," said Anderson in reply *to Tanner, v bang it all! Willie Lamar Is a girl—Wilhelmina is her name." "A b! Thnt al ten- the case. Ia she pretty !" " (Jome and see for yourself." They went. It was a beautiful summer afternoon, and Willie entertained her visitors in a rose-embowered porch. She was about twsuty years old—very round, plump, rosy, full of mischief and of talk. She was a sort of belle in the circle in which she moved—a fact which made it singular that John Tanner had never before seen her, for John was a great ad mirer of the ladies, and the town was too small to boast many belles. The visit lasted about an hour. Tanner and Anderson went away witb different impres sions : the former so well pleased that he ex pressed his determination to visit Willie regu larly ; the latter so unfavorably, or rather so slightly impressed, that tbe recollection of Willies existence soon passed entirely from him. Three years after this, Jobn Tanner, who had bees abroad for eighteen months or more, came bach home. The tessel which brought him to bis native ahoree passed in tbe night another vessel which was bearing off the girl he cared to see above all others in tbe town.— She was gone only a few months; but when Bhe returned she was a bride. Tanner was in vited to the ftrst party that was given her after she landed. He accepted the invitation. It is nothing to you, O! reader, nor, perhaps, to me; but tbe truth Is,tbat party tried John Tanner to the utmost extent of bis capacity for endurance and concealment. He met his Bweetheart with great apparent calmness. His face was naturally pale; no one knew how weak he was—weak as a child. As sdlju aa tbe dancing commenced, be ex cused himself to tbe host for not indulging with tbe rest, and, pleuling indisposition, (it was something more than that,) retired to an ante-chamber and threw himself upon a lonnge. from which, through the open door, he could now and then catch a glimpse of the woman h#had loved with all bis heart, as she moved in perfect time and grace, smiling upon her partner and— husband. How beautiful she was that night!—tbe last night that poor John ever saw her. There he reclined on tbe lounge, feasting his eyes upon her loveliness and eas ing his stricken heart witb prayers for her happiness. He saw nothing, heard nothing else. He was entranced. When, at length, refreshments were handed round, he refused to partake of anything, but, maintaining bis position, tell into a reverie so profound that he was utterly unconscious of everything around him—at least, he told me bo witb bia own lips. " Permit me to offer you some of my grapes —they are really delicious." And a costly plate, piled high with Malaga grapes, was thrust under John's nose. The voice of tbe speaker was melodious, and there was in il an under tone of tenderness which touched poor Jobn to the very core. Evi dently the lady thought he was not well. Nor win be. Bousing himself witb n powerful effort, he reapectfully declined the proffered grapee, at the same time tendering his thanks to the fair doner. Who was she 1 Wilhelmina Lamar, as Tanner saw at a glance. But there was an archness upon her rosy face which did not suit his mood at that moment, and he sank back upon bib lounge with an air which forbade further converse. Two months afterwards there was a ball at Z House. Tanner was there, as gay as a lark He was not tbe mau to break his heart for any woman that walked tbe earth. Wil helmiua Lamar was there, too, smiling, happy, mischievous—"charming," as John told her wnile leading her through tbe mazes of the dance. Whether she exerted herself to please him that night, it is not for us to know; certain it is that she did please bim exceedingly. lie was fortunate enough to ride home with ber, nnd as he retired that morning he fonnd bis mind full of her. In a few days, be. as In duty bound, called on her. Sbe proved to be one of the most brilliant, ready, and flowing conver sationists he bad ever met. Was be smitten .' Let tbe sequel answer this question. After paying two or three visits, at short intervals, John suddenly stopped going to see Miss Willie Lamar. Why * to this day, no body hnowa; perhap.-, not John himself. Some mon tbe passed. At a concert or exhi bition of some humbug sort, John Tanner, sitting on a back seat, was musing over his own aud the public's gullibility, when he fell a light tap ou his shoulder, and immediately afterwards a soft voice inquired— " How ia Mr. Tanner this evening ?" "tiulte well, thank you, Miss Willie, but cry much disgusted and bored with this ex ibitioa," said he, replying to the lair ques oner, who sat behind him with her father. "So am I. But why haven't you been to see me this long time t Have I displeased you I" " Not at all. 1 have been much immersed in business, and besides have been rather com plaining." "lint sorry. What has been the matter nothing serious, I hope— no disease of tbe heart I I bear of you, »ir. You find time, iv spite of your business and your complaining, to go quite often to see the beautiful Miss This was the truth. Tanner turned it off. " I have been to see her occasionally. But I have been ailing for all that." "In consequence of that, you shou'd say if you desire to keep to the record as published in the gossipping circles." "All a mistake. Miss Willie, I assure you — I only wonder that you attached any credit to it." ♦•I should not, bat for the fact that 1 have lost, without any offence on my part, a valua ble acquaintance. The facts in the case, as we glean them from reliable sources, are about at* fol lows : Miss Anna Bond, an elegant appearing girl of bright fifteen, rosy with life nnd joy, daughter of Col. Eaton Bond, a wealthy and highly respectable planter of tbe vicinity of Denmark, iv this State, and Dr. W. W. Sim moils, a worthy and promising young practi tioner of Springdale, Lifayette county, Miss., became enamored of each other. The attach ment of the young )>eople did not meet the ap proval of the lady's parents, and, as is not unfrequently tbe case under similar circum stances, an elopement was planned between them, and duly executed on Thursday night last. The parties, accompanied by a few se lect friends—three ladies and .is many gentle, men—took tbe cars immediately after the elopement, arrived tat the city at an early hour on Friday morning and took rooms at the Worsham House. During the day the par ty visited Raleigh, where the young couple were duly married, and afterwards again returned to town and the Worsham House.— In the evening, the newly-wedded pair, ac companied by their friends, visited the thea tre, where Mr. Simmons met a young man named Benjamin Kloom, a former and unsuc cessful suitor lor her hand. The performance nt the theatre over, Bloom accompanied tbe party to the parlor of the hotel, and engaged iv conversation until a late hour. About 1 o'clock, all had retired to their rooms witb the exception of Mr.aud Mrs. Simmons and Hloom. The hour being late, tbe young lutsoand also intimated his purpose of retiring, and with bis wife proceeded in the direction of their room, but before reaching it, tbe lady, under pre tence of a desire of visiting the room of one of her female friends, begged a moment's ab sence. The husband assented, and proceeded to bis room alone, in the expectation of being speedily rejoined by his youug bride. A half hour or so elapses, when, the lady not return ing, he concludes she has retired with her friend, and throwing himself on the bed, is soon in a sound slumber, from which he is awoke in the morning to find his wife not only still absent, but that she has fled the premises in company with Bloom. Search for tiie fu gitives was at ouce instituted, but without success, when about .'.o'clock last evening, just as the Doctor and bis friends were about re turning borne, the lady returned, and implor ing ber husband's pardon, was forgiven. The whereabouts of the scoundrel, Bloom, is still unkuown— Memphis (Term.) Bulletin.
