$idrntflitu ffiipfefr. l Written for the Richmond Disputes 1 A LADY'S CHALLBNOB, AMD HOW ITENDED. UY » BTOZIS APM-at*." I[cr»»ctcDßt>.J Tanner wheeled iastaatly and naed on Mies flllie a glance that was ißtended to search the »ry depths of her soul. Bnt he only saw a niting nnd mischievous young lady. " Well, that «*< cool," said hs at length. "Ifot snore cool than true.-* "And yon can trial* me fail ia lore with ou I" •• I can." ■ 1 dare yon." ••No lady of spirit ever took a dare. But, i shove you what faith I have ia my obarnu, will be tbe challenger. I dare you not to Ml i love with me." " I accept tbe challenge." " I must make one stipulation." "Ob! yon are trying to get off—you ere iching ont." " Not the least bit, as you will see, sir. If I n to make you mil in love with me, I mu-t are the opportunity." " What do you mean by ' opportunity t'" " That I 'shall see you ; which means, that ou shall visit me." ** Yon are quite right. That is nothing mors tea fair. 1 wilt visit yon." "Not once a month, or once a week; but f ten—intimately." * I agree to that, too." • Then we understand each other ?" " Yes. lam to c*ome once a day to see you." " Twice, if you like. Tbe oftener tbe better >r me." "Of course." *• It is a bargain, then I" « A bargain." " Give me your band on it." John did as he was bidden. Miss Willie ad a band which any man would delight to lake. As she pulled off her glove, Jobn was, >r the first time, struck with its diminutive -OS and perfect form. Nor did the gentle reesure she gave bim in sealing the bargain iter fere at all with the f vorable opinion he ad formed of that little hand. As she held is own quite fearlessly, she said archly. •*Tbis is but the beginning of tbe end. I 111 make yon give me this hand at the altar ifore I have done witb you." "Ot>! I said nothing about marrying you," plied Tanner gravely. "Don't be alarmed, sir. Yon shall not mar • me unless I choose." "It seems to me that I mi*ht have some, ing to say in the matter." "Only to make the proper responses to the in ister." And so they parted. She shot a Parthian ance at him as she disappeared through tbe >or of the concert room, leaning on her ther's arm. Tanner's heart beat faster as at arrow of light transfixed him, but be walked merrily homeward, thinking no more of his adventure witb Miss Willie than he had thought of many flirtations whicb, in former I years, bad begun auspiciously only to be broken off at tbe very moment they threatened to become intensely agreeable. The next morn tng, though, matters took a graver tnrn, as they will do under the sober Influences of every-duy day-light. His word was pledged, there was no drawing: back—he must visit MirM Willie, and vim her that very day. Tanner was not vain, and yet be could not eecape an ugly premonition as of something evil, that could not be escaped if he carried out bis bargain to the very letter. Nor did it oc cur to him that the evil of which he seemed dimly forewarned would do much Injury to himself. Come what might, it was too late to debate the propriety or impropriety of hie course. The die was cast, and he must stand the hazard of It. " Well," said he to himself, as he ascended the steps that led Into Miss Willies house, "welt, if she can make me fall In love with her, ahs will do me the greatest possible kind ness. I'll marry her, and have, as she says, an aim la life." His reception was all he could have asked, and more beside. When a really pretty, well bred, and exceedingly sensible woman, tries to make an Impression upon a man, he must be made of obdurate material indeed, if she alto gether fail. Of course such a woman has art enough to conceal ber art even in the moment of iv most excited and effective action. It was after midnight when Tanner lingeringly with . drew from the sound of that swift, captivating voice, and the splendor of those large, brilliant eyes. Next time, it was easy to go. Next time, still easier. He began to look forward to bis regular visit to Miss Willie as the reward of all his dally troubles. Was he getting in love ? He thought so, and the thought gave him pleasure. He begun to go twice a day. People began to talk. His friends plagued bim about Miss Willie. He smiled, and was glad 10 be plagued. One morning, standing on the top step of the porch, with Miss Willie near him, holding by the vine-clad pillar with her plump white arm, and looking roguishly at him. he hesi tated. " Well," said she, interpreting his hesitation " well, tell me. Don't be afraid." " They say I am in love with you." "Do they I I'm so glad." " If you are glad, so am I." " But do they tell tbe truth ?" " I declare," said Tanner, with the most lu dicrous tolemuity, "I don't know. Some times I think I am in love witb you, and then again, I know lam not. What do you, think about it {" "Me I That t* an odd question. Do I think you are in love with me. I declare I don't know. Sometimes I " "Stop, stop!" said he, "don't quote my words against me. It is deliriously droll to hear you do so, but I am serious. Do I love you I" " It you did, you would put tbe question in a different form." - What form I" "Instead of saying 'do I love you F- you would ask, 'do you love me!' and be very anxious about tbe answer." " Well, do you love me ?" " Didn't I .ell you I was going to make yon marry me I" "Yea* but that is not answering my ques tion." " Well, do you think 1 would marry a man I didn't love 1" This Bounded thrillingly sweet to Tanner — For a time, the only answer be made was with his eyes. And she gave back look for look. But he was not con ten i with looks, he wanted what a woman does not like to give even at the lost: he wanted words. " Do you love me, Willie ?"' Even iv that warm moment, the nature of the woman was not to bo surprised or forced. She remembered that before putting this ques tion, his duly as a gentleman was to bave mode a distinct, unequivocal avowal of love on his part. To his extreme wonder and cha grin, she said, "Not one bit." Her tone was firm, calm, deliberate. If she were piqued. Tanner had not the remotest •Mi-pici.inof It. Only this be«aw too plainly— thni her gay miscbievousnesa was gone, and the calmness that had come in its stead seem ed by contrast coldness. He toncbed his hat wi i h that Impatient movement which betokens something more than dissatisfaction, and went hia way. A a for Mias Willie, I have it from good au. thorlty that she was very angry with Tanner for two entire days, and then excessively an gry with herself. His visits bad ceased. But bis absence was more eloquent than he him self could possibly have been; but how was be, who always held that woman was an in scrutable mystery even to herself, to know thU J Doubtless ibe fair, mysterious beings are constructed la a somewhat different man. ner from the ruder sex, bat not so very differ ently us to be as incomprehensible as many would-be students of human nature wonld nave tbe world of mankind to believe. These are not light, troubles, come how they may, whether for just or unjustcause. Tanner ceuld never again he the maa he had been. Later in nfr, he dis covered his mistake, and chnnged somewhat bis opinion of the character of the lady, but It was too late to alter the conviction be bad for so many years entertained of ths unwonhi uess of mankind, and of women in particular. Doubtless many estrangements—perhaps tbe majority of them—grow ont of mtsnnd-r --standings precisely similar to tbe one jnst narrated. What pain, what life-long solitude, a trifle may occasion! Two views may be taken of such cases. If blind Chance order all the happenings of this life; or if the countless weaknesses and foibles of humanity are chargeable witb tbe great general movement of the moral world, made up, as it is, of tbe lesser movements of individual actions: if, in a word, ths human Will is responsible for all that does not come of Accident, then, indeed, the bnrthen of blame must rest on both parties. But, as we have seeu in the instaaee of Tanner and Miss Lamar, it may so occur that blame should not attach to either. With the best possible feel ings and intentions, their friendship—their love, if you will—was sundered in the very act, as it were, of its consummation. How continually such events happen, not only between man and woman, bnt between man and man! May we go behind the most secret motive:-, arising out of constitutional peculiarities, which lead to these results, and seek for some remoter, the most remote, Cause I If not, we may at least take to heart the lesson of forbearance, of forgiveness, of the largest charity toward our fellow man in our inter course and dealings with bim. Little else remains to tell. They met on some public occasion, and were seen prome nading together during the evening. The gen tleman soon disappeared from tho gay throng; the lady remained, but there was a weary look in her eyes, usually so bright and beaming. Tanner's position, as 1 regards the goods of this world and the esteem of his fellow men, is indeed enviable. And yet I can never bring him before my mind's eye without missing from his side a fair figure which, In the old days, seemed to belong there and there only. The lady married. She says her husband indulges her every wish, and—"he is really very agreeable at times !" £"2s-» THE "DISPATCH" STEAM uK-Sa P 0 W E R VEt INTI.Vii t ) FF IO X, Corner of Main and Thirteenth Streets, Richmond, Virginia.
