MONDAY MORNING. £* The Charleston «'en veatlen. The disruption of the Charleston Oonven tion In loOfced upon hy tunny ns the partingol nnotaseretrandinthe cnble which holds tlie ship of IState to its onchnrage nnd has thus far saved It from ihe sea of uncertaintlee which must follow a dissolution of the Union. One link after another has given way in the divi sion of theßapUst, Methodist and (N. S.) Pres byterian churches; Congress itsell is little better than a house divided against Itself, and now, the great Immocratic party seems to haie broken in pieces, and left the Republic to the mercy of the winds aud waves. Such is the gloomy view taken by many muni.-, of the present state of public affairs. We are not inclined to attribute such deci .ive results to the late events in Charleston. There is, a*, any rate, room for hope that tbe ipparent split is more superficial than radi al, and that the Democratic party it- not yet <ectionali~ed. Tbe real difficulty seems to lave been about the man, more than the plat, form. If they had been able to presentncan iiid.ite whvt*e name would of itself have been i platform, il is possible there would not have been much time consumed in the construction of resolutions. After all, the public have not much faith in any platforms, except such us liov. M'bt constructed for John Ruowk aud those other distinguished members of the Re publican party who called a Convention and nominated a ticket in Virginia last full. The only mode of giving entire repot* aud perma nence to the Republic will be to erect a simi lar platform for all intriguing politicians iv the United States, and let them hang by the neck till they are dead—dead — dead. Mau is a creature of circumstance.*., a com plex machine, a combination of spirit and matter, the harmony whereof can be greatly disturbed by even such trivial circumstances ne the state of the weather, and the condition of bis digestive organs. This last, however, is not so inconsiderable a matter as it seem*. Hi cat allowances ought to *je_h-_*ri-r human naU*_*rTrit9_ Hie difficulty of keeping the liver iv order is taken into consideration, and a wise aud benevolent government, instead of spend ing mouey iv lishingbounties, in paying sharp eyed aud nasal New England fishermen for catching indigestible cod, ought to dispense i ts gratuities to those benefactors of their species who advertise so extensively iv the newspa pers preparations for the rectification and mi i igoration of the liver. Undoubtedly, many cases of actual crime may be traced to thedisor derest condition of thisorgan, while nine out of ten of the sour-visa*ed,grum,u aamiable people whom you meet in your daily walks, are sim ply the victims of a bad stomach, and deserve compassion rather than contempt. Even tbe state of the weather, as we have sujrgested, has its effect upon the temper, aud even upon the judgment and the mind. The illustrious Messrs. Heenan and Sat Ens are said to hr.ye exchanged some complimentary remarks on tbe state of the weather before they com menced their international caresses. It if well kuown that most of the suicides In England are committed iv the foggy, drizzling days of November. Tbe sun is a great brighteuer aud purifyer of the moral as well as the physical world, but too much of that good thing may cause decomposition as well as fructification. We make these remarks because we think the solution of the late disruption at Charles ton may be found in causes more superficial thau a deep-seated cancer in the body politic. Instead of the spontaneous and graceful ges ture of welcome, which the delegates no doubt anticipated from an elegaut metropolis of Southern hospitality and refinement, the first echo which the selection of the place of meet iug awakened was the s-liout of the Charles ton iun-keepers—"Five dollars a day." It was useless to explain to them that these enterpris ing inn-l. epers would necessarily be at great expense, and that the people of Charleston, a refilled and hospitable community, had no au thority to increase or to diminish the rates at their hotels. The we.ght of this demand upon the pocket must have become an increasing bur. then with every day of the Convention. In Congress, where, up to a law period, the longer the session the more nourishing tbe jiecuniary condition of the members, no session could have been too long tor humau endurance; but i__ Congress were itself to pay a per diem of five dollars, how long would Congress sit' Without derogation to the late Convention at Charles ton, we may suppose that the personal incon venience aud heavy expense of tue occasion abbreviated their consultations. Moreover, a hot Southern city, the thermometer at 95, mint juleps aud are not tbe most elli cieut auxiliaries of cool deliberation and calm resolve. We are, therefore, uot surprised at the secession, nor of course at the adjourn ment of the remaining body; for, alter the withdrawal of twelve States from its delibe rations, and its owu fruitless balloting* lor a candidate, there was uo alternative but an ad journment, and taking tbe chances which sorrowful experience, sober second though ts* a cooler climate, and circumstances more fa vorable to the healthful operation of ihe di gestive organs may ensure. Whether tbe re a~seinbliug of this body will be attended by belter success, remains to be seen. Possibly, au entirely new Democratic Convention will be assembled iv Haiti more. We observe that the Convention composed of tbe seceding States, has paid our own city tht* compliment of selecting it as their place ot meeting. We can assure them of a cordial welcome. We htive here the handsomest ami largest city of the Southern Atlantic Slates, a climate proverbial lor healthfuluess, and as hospitable, intelligent and patriotic a people ns can be found in the broad limits ot the Union. We have in our midst the monuments of tbe great men of tbe Past—of Washing- TON, Of Jg_ FKBSON, M_Bo_, PATRICK H-KBY, who delivered us from foreign tyranny ami laid the foundations of the American Union. The old Church, St. John's, is still standing, in which Patuiok Henry thundered, in which the first impetus was given to the ball of the Revolution in the South, and iv which the Couventiou met thnt accepted that Constitu tion. Tbis is a sacred place, and all around it is holy. This old, classic ground of the Revolu tion is egain to be agraud political battle-field. It is well for National Conventions lo meet here, and drink in the inspiration wbich il luminated tbe soul of the sages, statesmen and soldiers by whom our independence was achieved and our government established. Southern Literary Messruger. We are requested by Messrs. Mai karlakb A Panuti-soK, the proprietors of tbe _s*e__eru r l tterary Messenger, to announce tbnt .Tohk R. Thompson, Esq , whose connection with tbe Augusta Field and Fireside has been already noticed iv this paper, will be succtded in tbe editorship of tbe Messenger by Dr. GKOK-K W.liAonv, a gentleman wbose flue literary attainments and cultivated taste give assur ance that he will fully sustain the reputation of tbis periodical. We avail ourselves of tbe occasion, once more to invoke i tt r*»balf of tbe Alr*»«_ger the cordial and universal suimort of tbe triends of Southern literature. Let them uo longer permit tbis meritorious _aa_a_iua to languish, but corns to the support ot it* proprietors with that « material aid » W iUi out wbich no literary enterprise, whatever its excellence, can command success. The evidence-hken before the ailed ion Com missioners also proves that this evil is by no means confined to the largest class of voter** j that the chief actors are lawyers of fair repute and tradesmen styled respectable; that men commonly deemed honest members of the cominumty have couie to look upon the act of receiving money for their voles and influence at elections, as a very harmless aud iniioceut transaction, which ought not in any way to affect their .lauding in Moiety. The London Star exclaims : "Turn which way we will, we meet with proofs of wide-spread venality and corruption, which may well make us doubt whether we have any right lo boast that we live in a civilized and Christian laud." To tb- Edi'or of the Dispatch —In my last letter I save a deicnntioii of Catarrh, pointed out the con nection which exists between this disease and Consumption, and explained a method of treat ment under which it is rapidly and radically cured. I shall now proceed to speak oi affections ot the Tnroat. , . , . . , The Throat is that cavity wh.ch is seen'*/»•<* aad behind the curtain of the palate, on looking into tlte mouth. From the centre of the palate a little point ham's down towardi the root of the tongue—this is the " uvula." On each side ol the en franc c t„ the cavity called the throat.-ue haye two glands-the tonsils. The throat is lined by the mucous membrane, which also covers the uvula and tons.:.-;. Beneath tne mucous membrane there are little glandular bodies, which, in health, secrete a lubricating thud—these are the mucous fottules. ~ ~ Now. all these several t.arts are liable to disease, hence you will understand thai aii affections ot the tbroat are not alike, aur can that lie cured b* the stn.e lOasediee. The tonsils may be *•« iarged Iron) repeated attacks ol satesy or the uvula elongated from repeated attacks of simple sore tiiroat. To detect and remove these several diseases, ig tlie businens of the physician, and that physiosn and that practice which aooompiishe* these ob jerts with the greatest certainty and with the leastinconvenier.ee. is the moot deserting the confidence of tlie public. In ordinary sore throat, occasioned by a coltl, there is simply redress, and slight putfi'iees oi the membrane, witic,h subside after a few daTs, and leave the parts affected in their for mer condition. This occurs to moat persons dur tngee_h winter, but is thought ef so little coase tiuence as scarcely to deserve attention. Not so in reality, however; for each attack leaves an in creased iiability to a recurrence, and lain the fi.un dHtmn ol chronic diseases. It is imperative that all these cases should be promptly treate.l, by the use of warm enrtithent inhalations from a propel instrument, the tubes ot wincii are oapabfeol di recting a large volume of vapor into the throat, without ellort on the part of the patient. But simple sore throat does not sewers termi nate in tins satisfactory manner. All the unp.e.;* ant symptoms gradually disappear, leaving the pa tient, as he supposes, m perlect health, but soon lie becomes conscious if a harassing titillation, pro ducing a desiic two or three limes a day to cleat the throat. This, probably, is not perceptible to himself, but is noticed by his friends. Ou looking into the throat, under these circum stances, granulations of various sizes wiil be seen studding the membrane, aad causing it. to appear rough and uneven. At times, these exist hi irreg ular patches, but COB* HI only they are regular IB stiape, ami each granulation is distinct. M.ou il the disease progress, the mucous follicle* of the larynx also liecome involved, and then we have a HosKuasa ol tlie voice, with fre.menf and vexa tious atteaapts to char tiie throat.
