UUBEuaT MOaUHiNO .....Blrftlrf H* Tbs Late W. H. Eewßfrd The dowsfisil of Wat. B. **mE* "If *•*» M-bjb. Wo bad Bat snaaaoaed that Mr. «Bw» abi> waa entlOed ta taa"bs*a»s-aT STBtaswad, bat tbat he was ass meat adroit poliuclan of tbe day was a fact conceded by everybody: that he was the atoet subtle, tortuoas aaaftuu serapulouaof demagogues, no one, not of his crura party, pretended to doubt or deny. He had about him none of tbe creative qualities of the a talesman, nous of the oa pearly of con st racUa* ao comprehensiveness. The genius «f tbe early fathers of the Republic called Into being a great nation, and that of their successor* developed, invigorated and eularged it, but Seward had no ability of thia kind. His talent was for andeimining that which others had erected at great pains and cost he elevated himself by pulling down that which others had built ap. He wmssied po litisal strife, aecUonal convulsions and civil war, for the purpose of becoming President. The nearer tbe conmry seemed to destruction, tbe more promising were the prospects of this political Ivy, which was risiug upon the rates of the Republic aud growing greeu upon its decay. We had supposed tbat the success of this man waa inevitable. He had met no check in his upward career. He had con quered the great Stele Oaf New York, aid chained i*» gallant and cblvalrlc metropolis a captive at hi= triumphal car. He was so pro foundly calm nadenuuing; he moved with such self-possessed faculties, snch wonderful intelligence, nnd such a stealthy and elastic m*P towards his prey, that we did not gee hew it was possible foritio escape. As if to double his chances of success, be bad the aid ef the most sagacious, experienced and energetic jackal that ever traveled in couples wiib a political tiou. We suppose that uo political editor or manager in the United States ever pre tended to equal Tut'ELow Weed iv craft, tact and nnscrupnlousuess. Moreover, as migui. reasonably be expected, tbe "sinews of war" bad not been neglected in preparing for the final struggle. Ii is said that, through black mailing and other nice municipal job«, the Regency, of which Weep is head, had come into possession of an election fund of abiut two millions of dollars. Seward had just COS&e heme from England, where he had been feasted aud to—'ted as the future President of the United States by the eburtlj aud long- j headed statet-men of Great Britain, who chuckled inwardly at tbe approaching con summation of their frche-.ies for tbe disrnp- i tiou of the Union. When such a pair as Sstw- AKn and Weed combine lor auy polLical game, we have ai ways coucluded that the game wet like the coon when he saw Capt. Scott— might as well immediately ccme down. We bad scarcely supposed there could be any se rious opposition to Seward at Chicago. But the best laid plans are often unexpectedly de im ed, and sometimes by agencies that have been despised. When the fable represents a mouse as able to render substantial service to a lion, it inculcates a truth which Seward. With all his cuuiii>-*% strangely overlooked in bis treatment of Houaoe Greeley. This il lustrious personage of ihe white hat is con- j sidered by some of his party to be so guileless, j inoffensive and ignorant of tbe world, that he ' can be trampled upon with impuni'.v. But , Greeley has shown that he cau bite tbe fie»l that treads on him, and that there Is venom enough in bis compoeition, when scientifically condensed aud energetically ejected, to annihi late the king of beasts. The New York correspondent of tbe Rich mond Enquirer gives us tbe philosophy of the course of Greeley, who is personally as pla cid and harmless aaa lamb; but politically as i remorseless and unmerciful aa a tiger. Mr. I Greeley, according to the correspondent, J desired some years ago, to be Lieutenant Gov ernor, an office which he was quite aa capable of filling with efficiency as Mr. Raymond, of the Times, to whom the Seward regency in Albany gave it instead of Greeley.— Again, the year before last, Greeley strenu ously songht the nomination for the Gover norship of the State, but Seward, Weed A Co. were again deaf to his appeals and blind to bia claims, and nominated E. D. Morgan. Soon after, Greeley made a Western tour; be wrote interesting letters to his paper, and, at various points, delivered lectures; but he did nut neglect the opportunities furnished by this extensive intercourse with the people, to pay off his political debts to Messrs. Weed, Seward A Co. He wandered to the distant wilds of Oregon, and, upon the shores of tbat unpromising region, be picked up the smooth stones which have just hit Goliah in the forehead and made him bite the dust- He returned from Oregon with the five votes of that State in his breeches pocket, which, if given at tbe first ballot in Chi cago for Seward, wonld probably have secured hie nomination. But be returned to unfurl the flag of Bates in the Tribune, and to fight against Seward to tbe bitter end at Chicago. To the utter astonishment of Weed, Webb A Co., and to the intense and unuttera ble mortification of Seward, who is said to be the moat disappointed man to-day in the United States, tbe vindictive philosopher of the TVtiua* proved victorious over the deepest plots, the ehoicoet wiaea, and ihe largeat elec tioneering fund ever brought to bear upon a patriotic Convention. The reeult ia, that Seh-ard, fresh aa a nosegay from the per fussed precincts of British aristocracy, is thrown under foot by the rough backwoods - man of the West, and a flat boatman, a maul er of rails, aud, worse than all, a man sus pected of being " honest," is selected in his stead. HITe dare say there is little to choose between the uitraism of Seward aad that of Lincoln. In point ot fact, tbe latter is said to be tbe father of the "irrepressible conflict" which Seward, in an evil hour appropriated and vaunted as his own. If elected, Seward might have kicked over the ladder by which bo rose to power, and administered tbe gov ernment on national principles. "Libcolb is au uneducated man, possibly more honest, but alao more violent in his anti-slavery language than Seward, lesa cool, cautious and circum spect, and therefore wore likely to adhere to his principles if elect* d, aud to be rash and imprudent iv carrying tbem out. These cha racteristics, however, ranst deprive him of the public confidence and d.muiish tbe chances of bis election, which, owing to ihe obscurity of his lite, aud bis utter want of political pre*. tig*, are not very brilliant. We may, there fore, r,joice with unmiugled joy at tbe le»s >v to "vaulting ambition which baa juai beea administered at Chicago. Tbe country is not yet so deed to the impulses <»f patriotism, of memory and of hope, as to be lit prey for the political vultures, who, patient aa they are persistent in their hunger, have long hov ered in the heighta ef our nrmsmsut, waiting an opportunity to descend, and gorge their ravenous maws with tbs dismembered lira be and Useless carcass of the Republic. Most maa would rather be twehty-flve any time; but, fifty and a prospect for the Presidency, may possibly make an old stager fresh aad vigorous. There is Lord Lybdhtrst, who lately made a line speech in the House of Lords, and is eighty-eight, whilst Palmer*, ton, at seventy-live, is the backbone of tho House of Commons. It la said tbat on the supply nights, when most of the members are away, he continue* steadfast at his poet, and is as full of animal spirits, as disdainful of > crutch on hand and spectacle on nose, as elas tic of mind as at any time within tbe last half century. The flne old fellow te said to cherish still a troiy English admiration of tbe "manly art of self-defence," which he evinced lately by subscribing " live sovereigns for that splendid little fellow, Saybbs." But, in this country, perhaps because the climate is not favorable to longevity, or be cause we live too last, and do not sufficiently observe the laws of health, or because our offi cials fail to encourage the physical develop ment of tbe people by making up purses for prije-Jighters, we have not many such vigor ous aim blocimr.gold fogies aa Palmbrston, Bad the British nobles in general, among our public men. The plaiu aud simple fact in re gard to the blooming young LrNcoLN is, that he looks quite as old as any Ame.lran juvenile of his years, wifh tbe single exception, per haps, of Greeley, who had a venerable aspect when he was au infant at the breast, and to whim, no doubt, all other men, Metri'Se i..*ti included, appear mere iulai. is. Tbe British Navy. Tbe Parliament of Great Britain continues to betray a laudable vigilance in respect to the condition of the naval police which pro tects tbe island from its faithful ally acro&s the channel. Lord Lym>ui rp r lately made a i speech iv the House of Lords on the subject, winch tills two and a half closely printed i columns of the daily whicn evinced powers very seldom possessed at the age of | eighty-eight. The venerable uobl man made inquiry of the Government respect iug the present condition of the British navy, and particularly with regard to the supply of sea men, marines, Ac. The Duke of Somerset said, in reply : •' That the Hritish navy consisted at present of fifty sinp» of the line afloat, and thirty-seven I i<ates, exclusive <>l blocs ships The number of corvettes win sevente... and tue-e, with sl.-us, many ot which were vers powerful vessels, made about ~ne hundred snu fifty in all, to which must be added one hundred and sixt* tun-boat*. W hen these reserve forces were completed they would have, on emergencies, 11,300 men avail abe " In the House of Commons, there was a dis cussion on the same subject, introduced by Sir C. Nafieb. Palmerston aud Tern Sayers. Tbe Prime Minister of England has lately begged to be allowed to contribute "five sove reigns for that splendid little fellow, Saybes." This is one of those delicate little dives for popularity among tbe pluck-loving Britons at which no one is more expert than the wide awake and elastic Premier. When it is taken into consideration that the English do not claim that Sayhka achieved a victory ; that their highest pretension is that it was a drawn battle, there is something wonderful in tbe honors they lavish upon their Cham pion. Snch honors, under tbese circum stance, redound principally to the Americans; for, not to be whipped by an American, is a pitch of glory which fills the highest ambi tion of Great Britain. "Honest Old Abe.'* The principal recommendation of Mr. Lin coln for the Presidency is that he is honest. We are not surprised at theextravagaut sat isfaction manifested by the Republican press at this fact. If the salvation of the country depended on finding five honest politicians in it, the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah would overtake it before sundown. "Honest old Abe !" We can imagine tbe honest old gentle man's surprise at finding such a handle affixed to his name. If, however, he ia honest in the main principle of his political creed, the "irre pressible conflict," so much tbe worse for the country, if he is elected.
