My right hon friend has > aited I thin-, in the letter which be btis just rendihat be did not know what the Influence • was 'which drew Mr. Delane, one of the edi torator manager* of ihe Times to me ; atd if by that statement he means to imply a wish on j mv imrt to exercise any influence over the line I of conduct which is pursued in thecase of that I lourual, I tan only say, in answer to.this t charge, iv the words of Mrs. Malaprop, that I . should be but 100 glad to plead guilty to the B.*ft impeachment and to know that the in- . sin nation which it Involves was really found- J ed on fact. (Alangh.) If the re are influences { which as the right honorable gentleman says, a have fortunately led Mr. Delane to me, tbey | are none other than the Influence of society, i Hear hear.) Mv right honorable friend has I observed, in ihat glowing address which he has just delivered to us, that the contributors ■ to the press are the favorites and the orna ments of the social circles in which they enter. . Iv that opinion he is, it seems to me, perfectly j correct. The geutlemen to whom he refers are, generally speaking, persons of great at- j tainments and Information. It is, then, but t natural that their society should be agreeable. My -cuuaintance with Mr. Delane is exactly *• of that character. I have hail the pleasure oi , meeting Mr. Delane frequently in society, and , he has occasionally done me the honor to mix ] in society tinder my roof. That society was, I may add, composed of persons of nil shades t of politics, (cheers,) of various pursuits, and I need hardly say I feel proud when persons so j honor me without undertaking any other en- J gagemetit than that which Mr. Delane always I makes good—of making themselves very » agreeable during the time of their stay. , (Cheers.) I have had the honor—and I need, 1 am sore, scarcely add that 1 esteemed it no small honor—of receiving occasionally under . my roof the right honorable gentleman the i member for Buckinghamshire, and the right J honorable gentleman the member for the Lm versity of Cambridge. Hear, hear.) The in- jj fluences which led them to do me that honor were of the same nature as those which in- j duced Mr. Delane to confer upourae a similar i honor—the expectation of meeting agreeable I b »ciety, and I trust they were not disappointed. (Cheers.) I bad also myself the honor on more than one occasion, of being a member of the ( society which assembled under Lord Derby's , roof, and in availing mysellmf that privilege I did nothing more than that which the right , honorable gentleman the member of Bucking hamshire, the right honorable gentleman the ' member for the University of Cambridge, or Mr. Delane did when they visited me (bear, hear,) that is to say, mix on fair and equal terms in the society iv which they met, and endeavor to make themselves as agreeable as possible." j A Slave Sax ton Obeys ijis Master's Ob debs Litekallv.—The burial ground at Al giers, New Orleans, in which tbe remains of the millionaire, John McDouoagh were inter red, was established by Mr. McDonough him self, abont fifty year* ago, as a place of burial for his slaves, and a favorite slave named Jack was honored with the honorary post of sex ton. Gradually tbe cemetery became popular and populous, and Jack was authorized by bis master to collect the money paid for inter ments, Ac, a task which he accomplished with business-like correctness and fidelity. According to ihe business account kept by McDonough witb all his slaves, (noting and rating their daily labor on his books, and by an original mathematical plan of his own, emancipating tbem as soon as the books showed they had a little more than paid fol themselves, expenses and interest IncludedJ Old Jack was presented with his free papers some years before his master died. He still remained the sexton of the McDonough ceme- ' tery: and some eight or ten years ago it fell to his loi to see his old friend and former master buried in the inclosure which he had guarded loug—and since McDonough's death Jack has stuck to his old post, attending to burials ' and collecting theexpeuses, the same as in for mer years. i A few weeks ago it was decided to disinter the remains of thedeadjinillionaire for trans portation and reinterment at Baltimore, and the exhumation was being progressed with when Jack—who is currently reported to be a hundred years old—was on hand and de manded F-M before consenting to the removal of ibe body; slating that Mass* John's orders to him, ever since he had been sexton, were not to let any one take a body out of the graveyard without paying B'£s. Jack's de mands were laughed at, and the resurrection ists having completed their task, placed the coffin containing the earthly remaius of Mc- Donough upon a wagon and conveyed it to tbe city. Old Jack would not. however, consent to the ignoring of his claim, aud followed the party to the ferry and then to the city, demand ing at every step the payment of the money.
