litton, Pf?*3rV FRIDAY w^mkstWO^^^^^^ »»*?L™'_! _»w »«. -.< --"•"*'' _s wmmmul i—Mr. »m!U«____**__s * aij-hmendaad ber Railroad Csaaectisas 1 dTrert 4 ennectlea with tbe Mississippi Valley. , __ One of the grandest mistakes ever made by •roar, ts tbe plausible but fallacious idea that natural advantages are all that ta necessary tor the growth aad prosperity of a communi ty On the contrary, all history and experience proclaim, with one voice, thai among commu nities as wsll sa indivtdusla. it dependa epou the man, rather than the circumstances by ■which he is surrounded, whether be shall con quer or oe conquered in tbe great battle of life, j u»t as tbs sou of s usbob is more likely to be paralysed by tbe vastness of his inheritance than inspired to new efforts to multiply hie wealth, ao a commanity, -leased by nature with every advantage of climate and locality, is as often sasrvaied as invigorated by the ~tenitude ef ita resources, and, instead of ful filling the promise of iv youth, is cast into the shade by some obscure but adventurous ri val, whose terveaad muscle are only strength ened by opposition, wboss energy ia more cre ative than the hoards of timid capitalists, and whose faith ia itself and its future can re move mountains. It is unnecessary to meution all th. name* of cities tbat illustrate ths notorioua.fact of which we speak. Tabe the map and Hook at the various marts of induatry and commerce in the United States, aud then decide whether it ia those regions moat favored by nature iv which the greatest amount of prosperity is found. Ons of ta. most remarkable examples of what energy and enterprise can accomplish is the city of Baltimore, which has no such natural advantages as Richmond, which has a miserable harbor, requiriugconstautdredging but which has become the third city in the Union. Baltimore builds a railroad of four hundred miles, a railroad through and across the Ainvncau Alps, ihe most difficult and ex traoruinary achievement of the kiud iv tbe world, simply to teacn tbe great Valley of tbe Ohio and yet, Ricumond is at this moment siumberiug in ihe most profound aud death like stupor over an opportunity which has iwai been secured to her, after yeare ol perse vering assiduity in tbe Legislature, to build a rai.road not more toau a Uuudred miles at the his. est esilDiate-proDaOly not more than sixty-almost on a dead level, by which she win have direct communication with a whole network of railroads, commanding the vast treasures of me South and Southwest, and, iv return, be nble to supply the producers of that immense territory with tbe goods and ■ groceries wbicb they consume. It is idle to say that we already have con nection wuh that Virgiuia aud Tennessee Road, which, leading tor two hundred miles Uiruug- tnericaestporiiouof Virgiuia, unites with the railroads of Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiaua. We have one kind of conuec tijn with it, true enough ; our money is in it to the tune of a hundred thousand dollars; bmaa to tnat direct connection, which alone can give a common pulsation of sympathy aud interest, mere ia nothing of the kind. By two circuitous routes, in the hands of those who have no sympathy with os or ours, we may couuect wub LyucUburg, and ao we may con nect with Wneeiing.aud various otber points in the United States, by roads which are but little more indirect, inconvenient and alien to Richmond, than toe two which, diverging lrom LyucUburg.completely ignore theprinci pal city of tbe Commonwealth. Suppose a city mucb larger than Richmond, a city of two hundred thousand inhabitants, and on each side ol it, at only ten miles distance, two parallel lines of railroad, which, at tbat dis tance, diverge and run off to otber termini, how long would it be belore tbe grass would grow iv ihe streets ol that city, and its popu lous places become aa solitary aa old Tyre 1— If our readers will look at a lailroad map of tbe State, they will see more plainly than words can tell them, tbe proaßs position of Richmond in reference to tttm two roads which, tapping the grearchannsl of South western trude and travel at Lynchburg, con vey the flood to tbe seaboard in two separate *tr*'_ms, not a ripple of whose waters ever reach our own shores. We propose to return again to this subject so important to the interests of Richmond. In the meantime, we once more invoke the atten tion of our citixebs to tbe Farmville Conven tion, which meeta on tbe 14th of Jane, aud the Convention Which is u> assemble at Bucking ham Court-HoW, on the 4th of July. Rich mond ahoaldat oace prepare to co-operate with our friende in tbe country who are man ifesting such laudable public spirit, by hold ing a meeting aad appoiatiag delegates to represent tale city at those Conventions. I Haa. Waa. C Preston. i tbe death of Wm. C. Pbbbtok, of South ulina, which we were called upon to Bu nco yesterday, Virginia and Caroliua bleud their tears over the grave of one of the most illustrious orators, patriots and states men whom tbe South, prolific of eloquence and statesmanship, baa ever given to the i country. Probably, since the days of Pat rick Hbbby, whose blood flowed ia hia veina, there haa been ao auch orator in America as Wm. C. Puxbtob. Who tbat has ever seen bis towering and graceful form; his gestures, that spoke more eloquently than tha tongues of most men; hia far* on Are with inspiration ; and who that haa heard that voice, which has been likened, in variety aad sweetness of tone, to the notee of a mocking-bird, aad whfch aometime* rung upon the ear like a trumpet call to battle, but has awarded bim the palm of being tbs first orator of America I A« not without interest at this time, we re-produce a sketch of Col. Mr SfcOABB ia by no means satisfied with confining himseli within such narrow limits. He meaus, he says, to attack the devil in all bis works, and therefore he fires away at what be calls tbe corruption of the times. Appa- I reiitly, he" does not include in bia classification j the various little peccadilloes by means ol wblch two millions or some ench snug sum were raised iv Albany for political uses by the Black Republicans to assist in electing Sewibd. That was but a spoiling of the Philistines, and therefore entirely lawful.— Tbe work of the devil which he thinks espe cially worthy of attack, is alavebolding.- Accordlug to bim there is no other sin but that, and he who owns not a slave ia incapable of sinning at all. I The otber preacher who distinguished him self last Sunday, was the Rev. Dr. Ohebvbu. Urn did not say that he differed from the Apos- , tie in hia opinions with regard to the duties | of a pastor; but he proved it. His sermon was devoted, not to Chbist and Him crucified, but to Thaddbus Hyatt and him luiprisoned- Hyatt, our readers are aware, refused to give evidence upon compulsion before the Commit tee of the Senate, raised to investigate the Johh Broww affair. He publithed an address to the public, in which he professed himself perfectly willing to tell all be anew. There was nothing, he said, within his knowledge, which he could injure either himself or anybody else by tell iug, and be would testify on one condition— If the Senate would only acknowledge tbat they had no power on earth to compel his at tendance as a wituess, or to imprison him for declining to answer interrogatories, and for the basest of purposes, it had usurped a power which did not belong to it, he wonld make aclean breast of it. As the Senate would not accede to this very reasonable proposition, be preferred martyrdom to compliance, and j so be continues to lie in jail. Dr. Chekvek's blood boils at this unreasonable conduct of the Senate, and he proposes to set everything right, by marching to Washington at the head I or his congregation, and taking Hyatt forci- j bly out of jail. He has no opiuion of any law j which stands between a man and his con- j science, and just now his conscience requires I tbe rescue of Thaodetjs Hyatt. What it will I require afwrwards, we are uuable to learn ; J but we confess ourselves much impressed I with the Dr.'s views ot law and politics.— I There is only ooe little obstacle in the way of his success. It might possibly happen that j other people, besides the congregation in Union J Square, might have consciences, and those j consciences might impel them to resist any at- j tempt to liberate Hyatt. What is to be done, then I One set of consciences, we presume, is j as good as another set. One man has as much right to obey the dictates of bis conscience as I another man. It will'not be pretended that j the congregation in Union Square monopolize all the article extant. Suppose Chbbvbb and bis congregation in Washington, and, under the dictation of conscience, pulling down ths jail in which Hyatt is confined. And then I suppose the marine corps, and the dozen uni- I formed companies of tbe District, firing on I them under a similar prompting of conscience. It is just as easy and as rational to suppose I the one, as it is to suppose the other. Con science is a two-edged sword. It cuts both ways. Thb Cbops.—The .joint worm is doing se rious injury to the wheatin Fauquier county, tVa. Some fields will not average ten bushels to the acre, from which but a few days ago the prospect was good for from twenty to thirty bushels. In Prince Edward county, a few weeks ago, the wheat was extremely promis ing, but tbe joint worm and fly together will injure it to a very serious extent. A meeting of citizeis was held iv Montreal on Saturday last, when 84,190 were subscribed for the reception of tbe Prince of Wales. The sum desired ia about 850,000. Tbe thirtieth anniversary Conference of the Mormon Church was celebrated at Groat Salt Lake city on the oth of April.
