right yesterday morning, and indicated, quite un
mistakwahly, active operations In that direction. —
The firing turned out to h tve been en encounter be

cavalry, estimatari al fifteen hundred strong, accom
panied by four pieces of artillery, provided with ra
t on- and forage for three days. Then object was,
doubtless, a raid in the direction of the Boot—side
railroad. Ihey found, however, our boys on the
ami rice; and alter diiving in thank-eta, Dame upon
a body of our reserves, who engaged and drove them
back pell-mall towards their own lines lv their ro
dent they threw away canteens, side-arras, sabres,
and scattered "their oats" in every direction.—
Our loss was a few horses ; we captured a few piison"
ers. Our lines havo been ro-obtabLished, and all is
quiet to-day.
' We hold the railroad at Rcanis's still, but the
oiiemy still have tho road on our boat just out of
ibis place Grant's next object (mark my predic
tion will be to eat the Bontfaehfe railroad with his
raiders, or, if possible, to make a permanent lodg
ment upon it as he has upon the W. l.b.n road. In
older to acoomptiafa this last result he will have to

broke out in an old tobacco factory in the alley run
ning trcmThirteenth to Fourteenth streets, between
Main and Frank——, destroying that, a brick b 1
lug occupied as an eating-house next door, and tl c

the buildings were old, and not of much value. The
fir.- is supposed to have been the woik of an incen

morning; a fire broke out in the old framed building
known as Myers's ncsro quarters, which lets back
in the yaid on Seventh street, between Gary ut d
Canul. lt was occupied by a number of females,
both white and black ; and before they were aware of
lt, the fire luid gained such headway .as to compel
many of thriii to leap from tho MCOnd-story wi:i-
Jow* with just what 1 lollies they had ou ; one of
whom, Mrs. Wallace Hefnin, sustained severe in
juries about the body and legs. Prom this building
ibe names extended to lorn other tenements, occu
pied respectively by Miss Josephine Douglas, Ed
ward Fag-ui, —- Swan:n, and a couple of old negro
women, employed in cooking washing toi Cap
tain Loch.
Tho destruction, financially speaking, done to
Dougi ess's property was neater than all the i-ent
combined. Bar house, which is a three-story buck,
was completely gutted, besides which the moat of
her valu.tblc furniture burnt up, including 'U
perior wearing apparel, a lull assoiiment of piovi
aioiii, and a large tiiuik containing a line collection
of Oliver table warn and several tlious__d dollars in
gold and silver coin, which were melted into one com
mon mass and afterwards spirited away, where she
has not since heard from them. Her loss wiii amount
tv about sixty thousand dollars. The Other houses
wero contideiably damaged in the rear, aud each of
the occupants lost a portion of their ful nituic J but
the tenement I being small, old and dilapidated, the
aggregate damage done to them cannot exceed t>ix
or eight thousand dollars. The back and front ten
ement-, which first took fire, including the lots, be~
loni,'to Mr. \VilUam IP Poindexter; the house oc
, npied by Bwann is owned by John W. Bremer, and
that 111 the possession of Pagan is owned by Mrs.
Catherine Ruins. Myers's negro quarters, together
with all the furniture therein, was entirely de
stroyed.
About the origin of the fire there arc two reports,
both ol which we give without expressing any opin
ion. One is that it originated from a tiro used Ly an
old woman named Jane, who was engaged at that
hoar in baking pies for sale at the eaily Petersburg

The Dcellera Case.—On Saturday the cgae of
Messrs. P. C Elmore, and H. Riveo Pollard, parties
alleged to have boon recently concerned 111 a duel,
was taken up by Justices Riddiek and Lee, of
Henrico, at the County Court-house.
Dr. Tally, a Confederate surgeon, was called to
the witness stand, whereupon Mr. John B. You.ll;',
the Commonwealth's prosecutor, propounded ques
tion- to him Kinular to those which had been asked
Dr. Peticolas, all of wliich Dr. T. declined to answer
upon the ground that they uiight implicate him in n
criminal prosecution.
Mi. Young, at ihis htago of tlie proceedings, an
nounced that ho should uke no further steps in the
piosecution of the case till tho Court oi Appeals
rendered tbrir decision as to the legality of Judge
Mci.-duh's opinion releasing Dr. Peticolas from the
obligation to give testimony in relation to a duel
which had been fought by "John M. Daniel and P.
C. Elmore.
Mr Young slso stated that information had j
readied him which indicate-that Oeneral _o__nf;
•en would be an important witness, and be hoped j
the court would use stringent measures to procure
his attendai.ee at the next examination. j
The Court then adjouiued till Tuesday, the 13tii

were well supplied with meats, vegetable*, poultry,

able in their demands, good beef selling for thre

AcmiTinn —The case of John B. Williams, a
Confederate detective, charged with shooting, on
Thursday night last, Joseph Foster, a Confederate
deserter," was again taken up before Commissioner
Bands on Saturday. After a iigid examination "f
all the- facta in the matter, it appeared that Wil
li .ins did no more than what it was his duty to do,
and he was therefore hor.oiably discharged.
Srkt to Salisbury— Sixty-odd prisonors, con
fined for ijijc time ia Castle. Thunder, were sent off
this morning to the Confederate States penitentiary
at Salisbury, North Carolina, there to be kept till
the expiration of the 'sentence found against
FLts-or-TnccK Boat —Another ' flig-of-truce
boat from Fortress Monies is expected to arrive at
Varina this afternoon or to-morrow. It is sup
posed that she will bung some answer from th<
Federal Government with reference to the exchange
of prisoners.
