FROM PETERSBURG.

tion about Petersburg has bf no means lost its in
terest. Grant's purpose, in mussing lus troops to
the left, is known to be the occupation of the South
side railroad, aud thus to force an abandonment of
the position. This movement nay be inaugurated
any day, but its success depends very much upon
Grant's ability to out-mauieuvre a general more
• iitliful than himself at the head of an army which
has never yet kuoini defeat. It is, therefore, with
feehugs of the utmost confidence that the people
await the movement that shall be the signal for the
t erribk-trial of arms with which this bloody cam
psiigu will close.
The Yankees are still laboriously engaged upon
their canal at Dutch Gap. A deserter states that
when it is nearly finished its completion will be
exiK'dited by mining and blowing out the ends with
gunpowder. Our batteries at liowlett's again opened
upon the working party yesterday morning, and
doubtless caused them to suspend operations for a
period.
FROM GEORGIA.
Accounts from Georgia represent that General
Hood's troops are in the best of (spirits, and that the
fall campaign promises to be an active one- A
new strategic movement is on foot, from which the
best results are anticipated. The nature of this
movement will be made known in due time, but pru
dj-uce foibids any further uliun.on to it at present.—
Our 0 pii aon is that Mr. Sherman will find Atlanta
.....sit as disagreeable as he made it to our peoplo

few weeks ago. '
MUTUAL PRESS ASSOCIATION.
We invite the attention of newspaper publishers
throughout the Confederacy to the prospectus of the
'• Mutual Press Association," which appears iv our
columns this morning. The intiiction et worthless
and unreliable telegrams, at a heavy expense, was
borne until foibeurauee seated to be it virtue, when
lour of the Richmond papers withdrew from the old
association and set on toot an euterp--'*'- which pro
mises the best results. The proprietor of any jour
nal in the Confederacy may become a member of the
new association by contributing five dollars per
month in advance to the treasury, and forwarding
to the general agent all important news from his
locality. Thus, by making each member a news re
porter, nothing bgt reliable news will be forwarded,
and the publication of worthless trash avoided.

I cannot, as yet, give any definite account of tho
results of the battio of yesterday. Our hats will bo
light. General Crook struck the left flank of the en
emy, doubled it up, advancing down .along their
lines. General Rtckett's division of the Sixth army

and WheatonVs division:!, tukThg up tho some move
ment, followed by tlie whole tine, and attacking —
beautifully carrying—the works of Uk- enemy. The
rebels threw down their arms and fled in the greatest
confusion, abandoning most of their artillery.
It was dark before the battle ended. I pursued on
after the enemy during the night to tins point with
the Sixth and Ninth corps, and have stopped here to
rest the men and issue rations.
If General Torbert has pushed down the Luray
Valley, according to my din-ebons, he will achieve
great results. Ido not think that there ever was an
army so badly routed The Valley soldiers are hid
ing away and going to their homes.
I cannot give you any estimate ot prisoners. I
pushed on, regardless of everything. The number
of pieces of artillery reported captured is sixteen.

The raid by the Federal cavalry on the Rapid Ann,
in whith the railroad bridge over that sitream waa
destroyed, was performed by four hundred cavalry,
under command of Colonel Luzelle, Sixteenth Now
York cavalry, sicnt out by Geaeral Augur. The
movement was ordered in refereutse to the impend
ing battle between Sheridan and Eaijy's forces.—
The expedition w;u succecsful in the destruction of
the- railroad bridge, and also tho Liberty Mills, about
six miles nbove the Grange and Alexandria railroad,
and four thousand barrels of flour with considera
ble other property.
About lour hundred mulct were captured, but on
the return of tilts party the*y encountered a greatly
■ uperior force of Early's cavalry, with whom they
hud a smart engagement, losing twenty-three killed

The main object of the expedition, say the Yankee

New York, September 21.—Gold huj had a deci
ded downward teiideucy this morning. From 212 it
soon fell to 210, then to 207, and at liatf-past twelve
o'clock was ottered at 2ciij, with a still down ward fe'ti

Gne o'clock.—Gold has further declined to 205
under the uifiucuce of the news from Sheridan.
One and-a-half o'clock P. M.—Gold has still fur- I
ther declined to 2(H), and is still coming down.

Fremont has written a letter withdrawing from
the canvass for the Presidency for the sake of unity
among those opposed to -davory. In it he suys:

ceeding up the steep grade en Eighth street to
Broad, became unnianageable after getting a sheet

the bridge being up, tho locomotive struck against it

the fore-wheels of the engine ran off tbe abutment

the time of tbe occurrence. Engineer Nunnally,
Trainmaster Curry and two negroes were on board,

found impossible to stop the emntw. Messrs. Nun

before been in that institution, an additional term
of fire years' imprisonment was pronounced against

George W. Polliud, charged with burglariously en
tering the house of Mary Payne, a free negro wemau,
and stealing a gold watch and chain, valued at two

fore the Hustings Court—Thomas Divine and James
E. Jestis, parties engaged some nights since tv a
drunken spree and disorderly conduct in Piznui's
confectionary ston- aad Ann Thomas's boarding
house, were each required to give aerdrity in the sum

Divine was also required to give bad for hi* appear
ance before the grand jury in November next to
answer the charge of engaging in_a row ih Ann

its* progress.— lamest A. Moore, a wood merchant on
Broad street, was charged with refuting to permit
Mr. John F. Olazebrook, the wood measurer recently
appointed by the Council, to inspect his wood, ac
cording to the requirements of an ordinance. Mr.
Olazebrook testified that upon an examination of
Moore's wood, he* found it considerably shorter than
the regular length, aud the carts employed to do
his hauling were not competent to hold a bait
cord of wood. He therefore informed, bim that
he vis not giving full nwasurement to his cus
tomers, whereupon' Moore replied that he never pre
tended te *ell his wood Ly the cord, and denied the
tight to subirht it to the inspection of the measurer.
The Mayor, having a rase somewhat of a -similar
character under consideration, derided to render
his decision in both of thpm at once, aad there
fore: continued the matter till such tune as bt*
mind was satisfied what should be done.—James
F. Hammer-dey wan fined ten dollars for rieing
his horse on the sidewalk, and twenty dollar*
additional for beating a negro in the market.—
Math*w Powers, charged with buybaj potatoes iv
the market to scR again, was fined twenty dollars,
and his potatoes were confiscated.—John Hicks, a
free negro, was; ordered to be whipped for assaulting
Oaniel, slavt of 11. Edeliu, alter which he is to bo
put to work on the butteries. One or two other
eases, not worth mentioning, were disposed of, after
which the court adjourned.

Monday night to break into Michael WaU's store'

had 1-een driven into the door, when Mr. WaU, be
ing aroused by the noise, hoisted his window above
and frighteued the thief off He tired two loads of
a revolver tit the fellow, but failed to bit him. The
chisel was left behind, and may lead to the detection
of the rogue.

be one of the most profitable, in a pecuniary point
of view, held by any officer in the Confederacy By
the ordinance adopted, fifty cents per cord is allowed
the measurer for all the wood brought into tbe city;
and as the number of cords annually consumed heie
usually exceeds one hundred thousand, hts income
will amount to over fifty thousand dollars,
