Vet we think it fortunate tor tlu- South, at least, that he dad nut auc ceed. It eonkl only have poatponed the separation, without rotadaring it impos* bible The day wa> destined to arrive; and snoner or later it would havehrouj-'ht iv its train all Uk* evils and inconvem i ncies that belong to it. Postponement, we are disposed to think, would only have added to our difficulties. We should havelieen vi. toriousin any war which we should have waged with any European rower. The enormous armies which the two sections have brought into the field, and the unparal leJed obstinacy with which they have Knight, leave no doubt whatever of that tact. No European Tower could have stood hefore. the combined strength ot the whole country once known as the United States. The navy was, it is true, con fined to a few ships; hut in the course ut a two years'war it would probably have reached the number of a thousand. It would have swept that of either France or England from thu ocean. It is probable that, in the beginning of the war, France or England might have landed an army upon our shores. But events have clearly shown that it could not have sustained it sotf here a week, let its size have been what it might. The navy having be come irresistible, a million of men, il necessary, could have been thrown on the shores of either France or Qreat Britain ; and neither France nor Great Britain, let them vapor as they may, could have withstood the onset of such an army. Ofcour.se, Canada would have gone overboard at the very first rush, tor Cireat Britain, so far from defending her, is anxious, ever, now, to give her away to the Yankee. That we are not draw ing upon our imagination, we think the gigantic proportions of the present war sufficiently indicate. What might not tne whole country united have done ': The I'nited States would have come out of such a war with a high reputa tion, a mighty army, and an invincible navy. As was the case in the Mexican war. the South would have done all the fighting, and the Yankees would have taken all the profit and claimed all the' glory. They would have taken all the navy and as much of the army as they could havo induced to join them. Their le-.turce-s would have been multiplied beyond measure, and their arrogance would have grown far beyond even theii actual acquisition of wealth and power. They would not have failed to assert, more otiemiively than ever, their mission to settle the affairs of the whole earth, and more especially those of the South crn States. The Black Republican party would still have been predominant— would still have insisted upon their mis sion—would still have persevered in their determination to ignore the rights ol the States, and to make them all bend to their will. Separation and war would still have been inevitable. We should btill have been compelled to meet the Yankee hosts in the fields, and that, too, undu for greater disadvantages than we actually encountered when the war he gan. Suppose they had hail in the be ginning such an army and such a tleet as they now have. There is hardly a possibility that we could have resisted them, utterly unprepared as we then were for war. Such an army and such a tleet they would have had, had there been a war with lireat lii ilain in as there was vev.y near being. We re gard it as providential that it did not take place. COMMENCEMENT OF HOOD'S ADVANCE. There is no impropriety now in giving i.oiue account of Hood's departure Iroin Sherman's front for his rear. The letters given below, giving a description of the iitiirch, are particularly interesting, from ihe fact that they are written by a sol dier, and show the exultant fctate of feel ing in the Army of Tennessee. They are from the Augusta Constitutionalist, and the lirst is dated— OCTOBER I.—On the evening of the '-Ibth of September, orders were received to cook rations preparatory to a move. — Soon the camp was all bustle and ac tivity. Curiosity was on tip toe, aud every one seemed personally interested iv the projected movement. For a week previous, "grape-vine" messages had been constantly received that the Army ot lennessee was on its way to the ene my's rear, and now, when these mes sages seemed to be, in a measure con tinued, every one was wild with excite uient. Time wore painfully away until 10 o'clock A. M. of the 2'Jth, when the joyous words M fall in " were heard along the lines ; and the men sprang with ala crity to their places. Stewart's corps, with Loring in lront, Walthall in the cen tre, aud French in the rear, marched to the Chattahoochee river and crossed at Pumpkintown. The crossing of the ..orpa was a grand sight. From the lofty hills winch crown either side of the river, the long serpentine line of glittering arms and bristling bayonets glistened in the rays ol the declining sun, and aH the pontoons at so great a distance were in visible, it seemed as if the men were walking on tiie water. The ladies from the south side had congregated on its bank, and the wave of lace-bordered kerchiefs, aud the smile of approval which illumined their countenances, nerved every arm and fired every breast ss they toiled onward on their patriotic missi. m This army, I am thoroughly convinced, is ttaaheet in the Confederacy. The Virgin! i army. 1 am aware, has won hundreds ol victories -has really never sustained a d<*feat. It has pressed vigor ously on from one victory t) another without detiioinli/.itioii or disaffection, hut it has never passed through the fiery ordeal that the Army of Tennessee ha . Crossing the Chattahoochee, we marched nearly west, and bivouacked live miles from it. Continuing the inarch the next aaorning, are turned a little ti the north, and reached here yesterday about 3 o'clock IV M Wa are now six mil.-; from Powder S-arii***, on the road to New Hop* <'lunch, and about twenty miles to lhe west of Marietta. We have nil been araiting patiently for an order to resume the march this morning; but I suppose l Jeneral Hood is waiting lor the completion of some of his arrangements. Octobkb 2. —In one hour we arc on the war-path again. General Hood Ins unbosomed himself to the army; and every private of the army knows what is expected of him. Oeneral Hood has re ceived positive information of the fact that Sherman has sent two divisions in quest of "the Wizard of the Saddle" in Middle Tennessee. Two more divisions have been sent to Kentucky to recruit, and Blair's corps has been disbanded and sent home, their time of enlistment hav i.ig expired. We are therefore, Humeri catty, nearly aa strong as they are. The enemy has about forty days' rations of bacon, but very little bread, on hand.— We move this morning to the railroad—; t what point, is General Hood's secret, not mine. We will proceed northward, tear ing up the road as we go ; and, as Sher man will be compelled to provision his army, lie will he compelled either to foi low and attack us in a chosen and forti fied position, or move on further into our country without a railroad to furnish him supplies. Tin: Situation in Georgia.— A cor respondent of the Montgomery (Ala baaaa) Appeal, writing from Hood's headquarters, says that Sherman has three millions of rations south of the Tennessee river. Most of these are at Chattanooga. Previous to the raid of Wheeler, he had one million, but while the road was interrupted -some ten days -twenty heavy trains were prepared, which were rusned through in one day. Sherman feeds at least one hundred thousand men, including his troops and the hangers-on of the army. This is full rations for thirty days, and may he made to last sixty. With what he can gather up in the country, he may be able to feed his army ninety days. He adds: " Most of this stuff is at Chattanooga, the road below that point having been occupied in the transportation of railroad '< material and (juartermaster stores. It is hoped that Forrest will allow but little more to come to the latter place ; and* plans are on foot which will probably lock that at Chattanooga so fast that it aril] require the hull; ot Sherman's army to unbolt it. t hie third of this stuff ought to he destroyed by well advised expeditions. "Should Sherman advance in sufficient force to threaten seriously our cities and manufactories further south, Hood wiil pounce on his weakened lines and ruin liis reserve stores and thoroughly de stroy his lailroad. There is, indeed, little to tempt to advance, as it will re quire long inarches and heavy fighting before he can reach a point where he can do us the least mischief beyond robbing citizens. "General Hood's base is still behind him. lie can fall back, in case the exigencies of events require it, in any di rection except that covered by about lifty-tivc degrees, of which Atlanta is very nearly the centre. "Major Horback, ot the Army ol Ten nessee, has been sent to LaGrange as post quartermaster in the place of Major W. F. Ayer, who has been appointed chief quartermaster tit the Army of Ten nessee. " It is stated that General Hood is tear ing up the tracks of the Georgia, Macon and West Point roads. Seventy miles, it is stated, of the Georgia road will he torn up, and the Macon road to Griffin, and the West Point road to Newman. "AU the cotton at Palmetto has been brought away safely. A large quantity had been stored away at that point. v The Macon Intelligencer states, it is rumored that Hood has captured aw i. tie corps of the enemy, amounting to seven thousand, in the rear of Sherman's army." Gknekai. IlAimEt's Fahkwell.—Be iorc leaving the* Army ot Tennessee for his new department at Charleston, tien eral Hardee took leave of his old com mand. Amid cheers for " Old Reliable," the veteran commander came forward and made a very touching little speech lo the soldiers. In conclusion, he told them the com manding general would, in a few days, cross his army over the Chattahoochee on an offensive campaign, the plan of which he knew to be excellent, und he promised them that if they would but. do their duty and give him a cordial audi hearty support, and do such fighting as ho knew they could do, that the greatest success of the war would be the result; that Sherman would undoubtedly ta drawn from Atlanta. His >;peech was received throughoaf; with the wildest expressions of enthusi asm, and upon bidding them an atie* tionate farewell, the crowd rushed to wards their loved commander, and thou sands of the old heroes from Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas had tho melancholy pleasure of taking by the hands and saying farewell j to the war-worn veterans who led them ! on bo many bloody fields. Railroad Accident.—On Saturday, trains having on board twenty one hun dred Federal prisoners, captured by For- j rest, ran off the track not far from Oka- ! •ona. Fifty prisoners, with a few of the guard, were killed and wounded. It is reported that, in the confusion ul the ! moment, many prisoners escaped. Major Joseph L. Locke, formerly one of the proprietors of the Savannah (Georgia) Rcpuhlian, fell dead while bitting at tea in that city a few evenings, since. The soldier-* of Cockrill's (Missouri) bri gade recently kept fast day and con tributed one day's rations to destitute, exiles of Atlanta. AMUSEMENTS. 1V I'ornt'r B*Jll**!a and Itroivl -trw-ta.
