HC ID'S ADVANCE ON N'ASHVII LE—> ICTO-
JvV OVEB ■ *•' HOFIELD-TBE ENE_tY DRI
VEN 1 IFTEEN MILES
The Yankee papers furnish an scccunt
uf n battle at Franklin, Tennessee, eigh
teen miles south of Nashville snd though
they claim a victory, it is plain, from
their own Bhowing, that they have ai §•
tsined a disastrous defeat.
I hey describe tluir position at Frank
lin sa perfect and their victory there a?.
complete, and in the same breath an
nounce the retreat of their army to
Nashville. the news of
{ho victory was received at the gold
board with many qualifications, and that
gold at once jumped from 886 to 228 1-2,
and stood at this figure.
We may havt* lost some prisoners in
the beginning of th.* fight, but there is
no room to doubt that a great and most
important victory finally crowned our
arms, and hence the i-ritat panic which
the Herald dencribea as prevailing in
Mut-h*. il!r> and thp country around.
It is evident ihat Hood is now master
of the situation md is driving everything
before him. Thomas is within tho <le
fencea of Nashville, and Ihe Nashville and
Chattanooga road is in our hands, The
Yankee press, by making greal shouts
over th*- battle at Franklin, seek at once
to conceal a bad defeat and to relieve th.*
uneasiness felt for tin- fate oi Sherman.
whom the Yankee flee] havebeen signal
ling in vain along the Atlantic -.op .t.
Franklin, the point from which the
enemy were ..riwn by General Hood, is
twenty mill ; south of Nashville.
