Wrucnroroif, December 27,1864. The enemy, checkmated and defeated at aU points, has abandoned the strip of ground on which he was crouching above Fort Fisher, and, under cover of hi> powerful fleet, re-embarked on board his transports. His monitors and numerous other ships-of war have hauled off from Fort Fisher, ang, for ths present at least, have abandoned the attempt to carry thai etronghokL Such is the result of three days ef fighting aad the fiercest bom bardment to which any fort or town was •ver subjected. But let us take up the thread of events where my last letter leftit As soon ss the enemy's infantry had gained a foothold on the mainland, o.i Sunday afternoon, the 23th instant, they threw themselves across the narrow spit * *-£- Fort ra^mm-*- 1 -** * got between Kirk-land's' brigade and the fori, while Kirkland was between them and Wilmington. They moved forward immediately against Fisher, and attempt ed to carry it by a coup de main; but the brave garrison, quitting their guns and taking up their muskets, easily re pulsed them. A second assault was made, and with the like result; after which tho enemy withdrew up the beach beyond the reach of the Confederate fire and wait to work entrenching themselves under outer of their protecting fleet.— They ( mhde some prisoners among the . junior reserves when they advanced down against the fort; but beyond this our loss fins small, being less than fifty killed and wounded. Nearly all of our casualties consist of light wounds, but few bating been killed. Among the wounded was the brave Lieutenant-Colo nel Read, from Savannah, of tbe artillery, whose left arm was torn off near the shoulder by a shell while he was sight ing a gun. He wss doing well this morn ing. Another account states that the as saults against tho fort were repulsed by the junior reserves of this State. It is certain that these youthful soldiers have played an important part in the defence of the fort, and have acquitted themselves with much credit The fleet continued its fire until the infantry were ready to begin the assault, when, at a signal from tho shore, every vessel ceased its fire, nnd tho men on the water became specta tors of the fight oa the land. Very lit tle damage was sustained by the fort, which is probably the strongest earth wort, inthe world. Mortar firing' was kept np against the fort throughout the night,-doing no injury beyond interrupt ing the rest of the men. A heavy rain, accompanied by high winds, prevailed all night, *nd seemed to render the position of the enemy's forces on shore still more Fftcarknm. which should have reached heresixty hours sooner, be gen t* arrive. It was impossible to out offVthelr retreat, as it was difflsuH to prevent their landing. Both their land ing and their withdrawal were covered by the fleet, which Came* in near shore, and was quite U effective in protecting the movement ai a Urge, web-manned fort - * Such is the finale of the Christmas campaign of Beast Butler and Admiral Porter. It is not supposed they have wholly abandoned their designs against North and South Carolina; but, for the present, their attack upon Wilmington and its defences is checked and baffled. It is impossible to say what has been the loss of the enemy. We know that a number of his vessels were disabled and two barges, filled with men, blown but ofthe water; but beyond this we are without information. Weitzel's negro division was not landed, and some of the prisoners report that Butler was at New born, while others say he was present before Fort Fisher. We learn from the same authority that the infantry force which assaulted Fort Fisher consisted of Ames's division, twenty- fourth (cdn ■ solidated) corps, Butler commanding. FROM The Express of Saturday # contains the following about the situation €ver there : . " * All quiet along the line' may, with great truth, be applied to the military situation here, for nothing has occurred since the raid on the Weldon railrosd to break the quiet in this vicinity. "The only activity observable inside the Yankee lines is displayed in the building of winter quarters and the chop ping of wood, of which a vast quantity is needed to supply the army. We regret to learn that a large number of private dwellings adjacent to the enemy's lines have been pulled down and the timbers hauled away to build winteijpquarters.— ■ The Yankee operations in this respect are mainly confined to the Jerusalem plankroad,. the Mill road, and the rail road and vicinities. Many of the fine re sidences, and all the out-bout es attached, in striking distance of these roads, have been leveled to the ground, and weather boarding, timbers, bricks, and everything that could be used, have been transported within the Yankee lines and usad in the construction of winter quarters. No de serted house is spared, and in many in stances only a room is left for" an entire family. A party of Yankees recently visited the premises of Mr. William Gee, of Prince George, and robbed him of thirty thousand feet of lumber. - Many IJ *M \**m» %—.1. ,m*nmfmmm***- —-■-—-*■-- '— i lit * been-completely ruined. " 11 The parties who go out on these ex peditions generally number from one hundred to one thousand men, and their operations are not alone confined to pull ing down houses, but also extend to Healing negroes and provisions of every ki id. Several days since, a detachment of one hundred of the Thirteenth Penn sylvania cavalry, under command of Ma jor McCabo, was ambushed by a party of four Confederate scouts aad actually forced back from their expedition. Six of the Yankees were killed, and their bodies fell into the hands of our scouts. Major McCabe was also killed. This officer was one of the most brutal ty rants who ever oppressed a community or abused power, and the rejoicing is general over his death. " The only cavalry force of the enemy south of the Appomattox is General Gregg's division. There is, however, a very large infantry force, all in winter quarters. These quarters are neatly built, and resemble large villages, look ing very beautiful in their regularity at a distance." ! TEE SOLDIERS' DINNER. • Camf GoanoN's Division, 1 December 29, 1864. ) To tike Editor of the Richmond Dispatch : 'Tis Christmas. Yet how differently do we feel this damp morning, huddled around our camp-fires, from what we were wont to enjoy four years ago—be j for* fanaticism had driven us from our pleasant homes to battle for freedom's cause. However, we do not complain. Accustomed to fine Christmas dinners, :we were content to enjoy our dry bread and bacon without complaint But now we are told that the good eitiiens of Richmond and the adjacent country con template giving a nice New-Year's dinner to this army. This intended act of generosity on the part of citizens the soldiers highly appre ciate in anticipations, yet many of the soldiers begin already to predict that those for whom it is intended will receive but a very small amount, the most of it being appropriated' by the officers and attachees of the quartermaster and com missary departments—the various officers through whose hands they pass, and es pecially their sonants. Such things are anticipated by the soldiers, and i? any way can be invented by the leaders in ttfia move to carry the provisions to those for whom they are intended instead of ™' n gfecked away in their tents for fu ture feast* of the above-mentioned "at taeheea ana jervants, a great favor will be done the sclera and the dinner will bs mueb prissdb- theanns bearing men.
