pdjpifr Sisgattfe. MONDAY MORNINO JANUARY lfl, 1865. THE DISPATCH COVNTIN'J-ROOH HAS BEEN REMOVED TO THE NORTHEAST COR NER OF THIRTEENTH AND MAIN STREETS, (Spence's Building,) IMMEDIATELY QfXOSXXS THE OLD STAND. LOCAL MATTERS. Richmond Circuit Court, January I iTH.—The estate of Thomas Jones, de ceased, was, on motion of Mrs. Jones, by counsel, this day committed to the hands of 11. K. EUyson, sheriff of Rich mond, for administration. A return to the writs of habeas corpus in the case of Solomon Lillinfeld, claim ing exemption as an undomiciled for eigner, was made to-day, and the further hearing of the case postponed to Wed nesday next. Mr. James Lyons for affiant. A writ of habeas corpus was granted upon petition of Josiah 11. Harris, of Hanover county, who claims exemption as an overseer of the poor, and was made returnable to the 1 i>th instant. The pro cess was directed to Captain Growers, of company E, Fifteenth Virginia regiment, in whose company petitioner .now is. Mr. Lyons concluded his argument in the case of the undomiciled foreigner, which has been before the court for some time, but was delayed in consequence of the sickness of Mr. Lyons. The court reserved its decision until some future day. The court then adjourned until Tuesday next. Mayor's CoruT.-On Saturday the following cases claimed the attention of the Mayor: James E. Robertson, the young-man noticed in our Saturday's issue ss having hcen arrested on the charge of stealing two pieces of dry goods from Messrs. Chiles & Chehery, was up for a hearing. A memher of the firm testified that the accused came to the store twice that rooming before committing the theft; that on his third visit he slipped the goods under his overcoat, and was in the act of leaving, when a servant in the employ of the witness called attention to his conduct; whereupon the prisoner was taken to the back part of the stoic and searched. The stolen goods were found buttoned up under his overcoat. Robert son was sent on for indictment by the Grand Jury. Before leaving the bar, Robertson was again arraigned on the charge of steal ing a piece of light cassimere goeds from the store of Alfred Tolleson. (Micer •Jenkins testified that, while executing a search warrant in the prisoner's room, at the house of his father-in-law, he found a new ladies' cloak, made up from goods resembling that which Had been stolen from Mr. Tolleson's store. Upon in quiry, the witness ascertained that the prisoner, who has been married only three or four weeks, had made his wife a present of the cloth, and she had made it up into a cloak. At first the accused stated that he bought the cloak pattern at auction, and that that was all he had of it; but, upon searching further, an other lot of the was found. Mr. Tolleson identified the goods as some which had been stolen from his store about the 81st of December last, aiid said that he had lost a great many arti cles before. The accused was also re manded in this case for indictment, ma king three charges of a like character now pending against him before the Grand Jury of the Hustings Court Israel, slave of Henry Bruin, and Jor dan, slave of Georgiana Charters, were charged with stealing two quarters of fresh beef and a lot of pork, valued at two thousand five hundred dollars, the property of the Confederate Slates. The .» f was stolen from the meat-house on Broad street, which was broken open by the parties who committed the robbery. In the house of a negro woman, slave of Kichard Taliaferro, a portion of the meat was afterwards found. The evidence against the accused was of the strongest character; but, owing to the absence of other parties supposed to be involved in the transaction, the further prosecution of the matter was postponed till today. Nathan, slave of Madison Macon, charged with stealing a trunk containing 'a quantity of clothiug, the property of " Captain T. M. Semmes, was ordered to be whipped. A charge against James Smith, of assaulting and beating his wife, was dismissed, it having been shown that the disturbance was caused by Mrs. Smith, who was somewhat under the in fluence of liquor. The continued case of Frank Morris, alias Frank Herman,' charged with the murder and robbery of Michael liouke, was called up; but, from the sane cause which heretofore necessitated its post ponement, the prisoner was recommitted to prison for his appearance to answer on the 23d instant. * Elizabeth Dawson, charged with re ceiving a silver watch, the property of Michael Itoukc, deceased, knowing that it was stolen from Route on the night of s . his murder, was bailed to answer that offence on the 2<*Jd Instant. J -*- — • Police Arrests.—The following arrests were made by the civil police Saturday sod yesterday: Julia, slave of Isabella HatdifTe, charged with stealing a breastpin; Davy, slave Of Holt Wilson, Stealing beef from J. B. Wilde ; James and Charles, slaves of isos TittfherUke, charged with aiding in tfo jttiM to the Yankees of Jsufes, $Wfim Peter Webster, and John, slave* WW Pater Webster, charged with attempting to escape to the Yankees; Jas. Melviiv a whfe» man, charged with receiving a lot of com, oats, shoes, clothing, Ac, the property of the Confederate States, know ing them to have been stolen, and John, slave of Robt. Oliver, arrested upon slis" p-cion of trying to go to the Yankees. Sentence Remitted.—The sentence of, three months' confinement in Castle Thunder at hard labor passed upon R. D'Orsay I >gden by military court- martial, a short time since, has been remitted in consequence of the precarious state of his health. He was sent to Camp Lee on Saturday for consignment, but during the day obtained a limited leave of ab sence to visit the city, and was in at tendance at the theatre that night. In the opinion of Mr. Ogdcn's physician, he was not able to conform to the stipu lations of the linding of the court mar. tial in his case, and the authorities, therefore, thought it better that he should perform service elsewhere than remain as an inmate of the hospital. A Supposed Spy.—F. *W. Robartes was arrested yesterday and committed to Castle Thunder on the charge of being a spy. The accused arrived in this city a lew weeks since and claimed to be a* regularly commissioned lieuten ant-colonel in the Royal Army of Eng land ; but, in the absence of all papers establishing that fact, and his inability to produce any acquaintances from among the numerous English gentlemen now in tiiis city, his statements arc all doubted, and'therefore his arrest upon the charge above cited. When arrested be was endeavoring to obtain passports to go through the lines. RuNKiKfl Persons rHßouon toe Lines.— Detectives Jones and Fitchetf arrested, on Saturday night, John Munn. of this city, upon the charge of running persons through the lines. Munn had bargained to carry a white man through in a couple of hours, receiving in advance rive hun dred dollars for that purpose. When ar - rested, he was about starting off with his man. He is an old offender, and -fi already under heavy bonds to answer a similar offence, Retvbnsb Home.—Hon. P. P. Blair, about whose visit to this city there has been so much speculation, left for home on Saturday by the Federal tlag-of-truce boat. [Upwards of fifty Federal surgeons and chaplains were also passengers on the same boat.
