THE DISPATCH COIfyTISG-ROOM H\y BERN REMOVED TO THE NORTHEAST COR NER OF THIItIKINTHAND MAIN STREETS (Spenos'e Budding,) IMMEDIATELY OPFOSITE THE OLD STAND, ETHE NEWS. After their failure to pass the Yankee bntrm lions in Trtftifs reach oifTues day, our gunboats returned up the river to their anchorage off Graveyard "bend. Last night we received unofficial informa tion lhat they had gone down again. No firing was heard in the direction of Dutch gap yesterday, though this may be due to the fact that the wind was blowing in a direction to cany the sound from us. No lives were lost by the blowing up of the Drewry, the crew having abandoned her soon after she grounded. We may expect to hear fully from the fleet to day. Whilst our fleet was in motion on Tuesday, General Pickett made active demonstrations against the enemy in his front, and, it is said, captured a portion of their picket line. We received no Northern papers yes terday, most probably in consequence'of our naval operations. / The only intelligence received from the South, yesterday was the announcement from General llardec lhat the enemy vvere making no demonstrations on the *alkehatehie. To go to Biarchville, Sherman must cross the Uig and Little Salkehatchie rivers, which How together and form the Combahcc a k\v miles north of Poeotftligo. Mr. Blair, peace missionary, left the city yesterday morning fir Grant's lines by flag-of-truce boat. Nothing is known of what passed between him and the President during their frequent inter views. From what dropped from Mr. Blair in conversation with his friends here, some have inferred that he proposed some such visionary scheme as recon struction, the South to retain its peculiar institution untouched, and the Yankees to pay for all the negroes they had sto len. Any speculations upon his propo sitions, if he made any, are very idle, lie will unbosom himself to Horace Greeley, and everything connected with his mission here w ill be duly published in the New York Tribune. Let us have patience till that time. There has been, as yet, no one ap pointed as a successor to Mr. Seddon; as one shall'be appointed* Mr. Seddon*. resignation will not be re ceived. . It is said, and we believe correctly, that Colonel Northrop, Commissary-Ge neral, has resigned.- A bill was introduced into the Senate, yesterday, providing for the appointment of a commissary general, with the rank of brigadier-general. • / The Senate, yesterday, by a vote of fifteen to three, passed, over the vetoof the President, the bill to increase the number of acting midshipmen in the navy. In secret session, on Tuesday, the Se nate passed, with some amendments, the House bill lor the reduction and redemp tion of the currency. 3*be bill will be further modified in the House. Though it is nearly two months since the battle of Nashville, was fought, a Southern account of it is just published. • We tind it in the Atlanta Appeal, fur til: lied by a writer who seems to know what he is writing about. While it in very late to apply the antidote to ihe poison contained m the tiering accounts given by the Yankees of this reverse, yet we give place to the account as a matter of history. It shows that there has been no " rout" of Hood's army, nor any de- Imoralization in its ranks. Alter de- R riSins &c fight nt Franklin, the writer ? About half past 2 o'clock he attacked the re doubt upon qur left flank with over whelming numbers, find carried the re doubt, capturing about seventydive men and four pieces of artillery. He then attacked the other redoubt, about three quarters of a mile in the rear of the first attacking it front and flank, and carried it, the men escaping to our line. The enemy advanced about half a mile to wards the left wing of our infantry line • here we held them in check until night closed in upon us and ended hostilities for the day. General Hood immediately withdrew everything from the right, of the prankim pike, massed his whole force on tho left,-establtshed bis line, and constructed strong riHe-pits inthecourse of the night, feeling assured that the enemy did not outnumber us. "I have never indulged as high hopes of the results of a coming battle, because I was confident the Army of Tennessee had never had so good au opportunity for a great victory. I had seen the Army of Tennessee encounter and whip the enemy with even greater disparity of numbers in the open field, and I did not believe it possible for three times our numbers to attack us in front and drive us from our fortifications. vAt half-after 8 o'clock in the morn ing the skirmishing commenced, and at about ft) o'clock our line was vigorously assaulted with two, and in some- places three, lines of battle. The enemy was repulsed with great slaughter. About 12 o'clock, .we were assaulted again, and again the enemy was driven back.— About half after 3 o'clock our whole line was again assaulted, though not with the same vigor of previous assaults; but, unfortunately, our loft centre gave way, and from that point division after divi sion gave way in rapid succession to the extreme right, and the army left the field in confusion. If our lines had stood fif teen minutes longer that day, the victory would have been ours. " The ground was so marshy that our artillery upon the field was not brought off. We lost in the two days about fifty pieces, but our trains and reserve artil lery had been sent back to Franklin, and was, therefore, safe. An ample sufficiency of artillery is left in Our hands for all field purposes. We have had no report of losses, in killed, wounded and prison ers. lam satisfied that we did not lose, in killed and wounded, on the 15th and 10th, exceeding a thousand men, and a very small number of our men were captured by the enemy, except stragglers that he may have picked up on our re treat. How many of these he may have gathered I have no means of telling. v The army was rallied on the night of the 115 th and morning of the 17th, and the retreat made leisurely ana in order, bringing eff everything but a few broken do Tvn wagons, and the army is now going into camp at this placeand the surround ing country. Ido not think that our losses in men will amount to any con siderable number. We found the people of Tennessee delighted at oiir coming, a.id ready, able and more than willing to furnish us with abundant supplies; and in tears at our departure. Would to God it was in our power to relieve them at once and forever from the terrible op pressions to which they have been sub jected for the last three years. But mo--t of the disasters that' our armies have experienced are justly chargeable to the fact that our army at the front has been too small, while our army in the rear has been entirely too large. " If onehalf the men of the Confede racy capable of bearing arms would cease to shirk their duty to themselves, their families and the country, and take their guns and come to the front, we could exptl the invaders from our soil within six weeks' time. Will they do it ? If worthy of independence, they will; and the future must determine that question. " After three years of hard campaign ing, we find the Array of Tennessee back to Corinth, from which place we moved i in 1862. It is true, the enemy has made j some black marks through portions of] the country, and left many monuments, in the shape of smouldering ruins.and houseless chimneys, to remind us of his vandalism; but we are at Corinth again, and the rebellion is no nearer crushed titan it was when we were at Corinth three years since*" C>ck Generals.—General Beauregard psfesed through Columbus, going west, on Sunday morning. It is our solemn duty, at ail tunes, and more es pecially in a season of public trial and adversity, to acknowledge our dependence on His mercy, and to bow h\humble submission before His footstool confessing our manifold sins, supplicating His gra cious pardon, imploring His Divine help, and de voutly rendering thanks 1 for the many and great Westings which He has vouchsafed to us. Let the Reartsof our people turn contritely and trustfully unto God; let us recognize in His cbs stening hand the correction of a Father, and sub missively pray that tiie trials and sufferings which havo so long borne heavily upon us may be turned away by His merciful love; that His sustaining grace be given to our people, and His divine wisdom imparted to oUr rulers; that the Lord of Hosts wiU be with our armies, and fight for us against our enemies; and that He wffl graciously take our cause . into His-own hand and mercifully establish for us a lasting, j ust and honorable peace and independence. And let us not forget to render unto His holy name the thanks and praise which are so justly due for His great goodness, and fur tire, many mercies which He has extended to us amid the trials and sufferings of protracted and bloody war.
