Danforth's regi ment, second-class militia, under joint • resolution of the Virginia Legislature, as being over fifty years of age; and it being proven to the satisfaction of the court that they were over said age, they were discharged from service and bailed until the 4th of February to await the decision the Court of Appeals in the esse of Waiiain H. Redwood. Upon the prayer of James Pearce, asking discharge under same circum stances, s writ was awarded, returnable this morning at 11 o'clock. Alter transacting some chancery busi neaa, the court adjourned until this morning at 11 o'clock. Mayor's Court.—The cases before His • Honor yesterday were of an uninterest ing character. Davy, slave of Warner Jones, charged with depositing ashes in the street, was ordered to receive ten lashes. John Roberts, charged with having a bag of coal, supposed to have been sto len, proved bis title, and tho case was dismissed.. Lewis, slave of Dr. Samuel Patterson, • was committed to jail as a runaway. The following esses were continued till the 26th: Fanny, slave of Martha E. -Dickinson; Emms, slave of S. G. Ames, sad Kate, slave of Ann E. Fox, charged whii-going at large; and Charles, slave of P. B. Jones, charged with stealing a pair of gloves. . Boot or a Negro Founo.—ln an old blacksmith shop, located in the alley be tween Seventeenth snd Eighteenth and Cary snd Canal streets, was found, on yesterday afternoon, the dead body of a negro man. Persons living in the neigh borhood say that for some tune he had no other lodging-place than this old shanty, snd that he subsisted principally upon what he could beg about the streets. In tho opinion of persons acquainted with the tacts of the case, his death was caused from Want and exposure. An to Spetijie Tares. —Ambrotypists, apothe'e mes, auctioneers, bakers, bankers, billiard room keepers, bowling-alley keepers, brtwers, bro kers, butchers, carters, cattle brokers, circus exhib itors, commercial brokers, commission merchants, confectioners, dagucrreotypists, dentists, distillers, draymen, eating-house keepers, inn-keepers, jug* tiers, lawyers, livery-stable keepers, pawn bro ers, pedlars, photographers (which denomina tion include* all who make for rale pictures of any kind on glass, metal, paper, or other material, by the action of light); physicians, surgeons, tobacconists, and (in general) all dealers, by wholesale or by re tail, in liquors or marry other things, arc required by law to register their respective occupations or call ings and pay the prescribed specific tax thereon at the commencement of every A. D., to wit: On the Ist day of January in each year, no matter how shortly before they may have registered in a pre ceding year, or within such further, time as i.s al lowed by the Tax Commissioner, unless the busi ness itself be commenced after such time is elapsed; in which* case the registry must be made and the pecific tex paid at the time of beginning busi ness. In my district, the tune first appointed lor this year has been (at my request, for what ap peared sufficient reason,) enlarge 1 by the lax Com missioner, so tbat any person not yet registered for 1865 may s'.ill register and pay the specific tax in g.»od time before or on the Ist day of February n* xt, but not afterwards, save only where the business itself is commenced alter that period. The penalty which the statute (not a mere departmental regula tion) imposes is a doubling of the tux for the iirst failure, with a like accumulation for every thirty days of continued failure. 2. As to Taxes on Quarterly Sajes or Receipts. — The tin.c prescribed for making returns of such sales and receipts of the quarter ended 31st Decem ber, 1861, has been, iv my district, (in Uke uwfn ner,) enlarged by the Tax Commissioner so that such returns may be made to an assessor before or on the Ist day of February next, but not after wards. In, case of failure hereirr*fhc -statute re quires. the whole tax on the quarter's sales or re ceipts to be doubled Alter the returns have been made and the taxes have been assessed thereon, the latter may be paid at any time before the 10th of that month (February); that ia to say, before or on, but not after, the 9£h of the said month. The statutory penalty for failure in this also is a doubling of the whole tax on the sales or receipts. No further extension of timo will, I believe, be granted with reference to the taxes above-men tioned. The registries, returns and payments are to be made In the district where the business is car ried on. My district comprises all that part of Rich mond city which lies between Sixth and Fouiteenth streets.
