Tr& vilian were discharged from the Con r federate service under a writ of habea* j corpus, they being farmers in possession of the number of slaves requisite to en* ' title them to exemption. J Confederate States rs. the Southern Express Company, involving the scqucs- ' tration of certain property belonging; to l Joseph P. Jones, an ahen cnomy. The J court directed the receiver to execute a deed of said property to Henry C. Jones, l next of kin. *■ The habeas corpus case of Thomas W- 8 Finley was continued. c The court thereupon ailjourned till Sa- | turday. • Hustings Coukt. —Judge Lyons held ' a short session yesterday, but disposed of no cases. { Malissa J. Palmatcur, indicted for grand larceny, had her case continued till the next term, in order to enable her i to secure the attendance of witnesses material to her defence The case of Henry Smith, indicted for , breaking into the factory of Turpin ft , Yarbrough, was continued until Satur day, at the instance of the Common- J wealth. j The court thereupon adjourned till j this mornings . Mayor's Court.—The attention of the Mayor was chiefly occupied yesterday . with a couple of gambling cases, wherein \ two establishments were summarily en- ? 1 tcred by the police, their effects seized < and the occupants arrested. < In the first, officer Kelly testified that, I having first obtained a warrant to do so, ] ho proceeded to the building on Four-. I teenth street, opposite the Exchange I Hotel, said to be a faro bank. Ascending \ cautiously up the first flight of steps, he \ arrived at the top just as the negro door- < keeper was in the act of letting some one out. He rushed in, followed by offi cer Crone, but had some difficulty iff gaining the second-story room in conse- \ quencc of the negro throwing*4umself bo tween him. After getting insSle, he found < in the centre of it a large table, asound , which were seated some men, while others were in different parts—altogether numbering about thirteen. Found in , this room a paper box containing $1,040 in Confederate money; in the drawer to- r the table, $400 in Virginia Treasury t notes, while on the table were $1,000 a more, which were grabbed up by one a of the three gentlemen who were sitting: around the table engaged in playing cards; could not say they were p playing faro. The man who took t it claimed it as his own private funds. Went up to the third story, ? where I found a faro table, some " chips " and cards scattered about the floor, and some others in a bed, upon Which was a man sleeping. Under the bed, found a n mahogany <yise, said to be used for keep ing cards and dealing-boxes in; while in ' the water-tank the dealing-box was c found. Descending from the third story a to the second, I found officer Crone still • disputing about the one thousand dol- - lars which, the gentleman claimed as his property. Told him he must sur render the funds, which he finally con- Rented to do upon my giving him a re- , i ceipt for it Going into the yard, I found t two "lay-outs," which I also took pos- r session of. [ The.articles were exhibited . in court j f Officer Crone made a statement vary- t ing but little from that of Mr. Kelly's. t The gentleman from whom the one « thousand dollars were taken by Officers c Kelly and Crone denied that any faro ' game was going on in the room in which l he was found; nor did he think there was any being played about the build- \ ing. He was simply playing "poker" \ when the police entered, and the thou- \ sand dollars which he took up from the , table were his own funds, which he had - just taken out of his pockets to play j with* i Tne Mayor, upon hearing the evidence, c sent the parties on for examination, ad- I mitting the accused to bail for their ap- l nearanee. In the second case, in which the bank ■ raided upon by the police was situated f on Main street, opposite the Spots wood ' Hotel, after a short examination, the ■ facts of which are similar to the first, the Mayor announced its continuance, and l also admitted the parties to bail. ' Gabriel, slave of William Greanor, t charged with stealing a ladies' dress, . sack and coat, valued at $1,500, the pro < perty of J. H. Schumann, was again up c tor a hearing, but was further postponed i in order to enable the accused to obtain a witness who, he thought, would prove his innocence. Several negroes were ordered to be c snipped for beine out after dark without f P**s« snd committing thefts. A_BOLD!RR SROT.-AboUt SIX o'clock •R Wednesday'_i ghtf _ soldier, named < Janes Clark, a member of company B Tweßty-fourtb Virgin ™ shot and instantly killed in •__i ■_£•** £• report of the pi_t,f • Hf : mmks fo*y m not %* out of thSr a * ~ **v. houses to investigate the matter. # A short while afterwards, some earthy came riding by and discovered the body lying on the ground, a lifeless corpse, when Coroner Little was sent for, and, upon examination, found thst the ball had entered the right side of his nose, passing out at the back part of his head. Tho body was removed to tho residence of his parents, near the eastern suburbs of the city, from whence it will bo buried this morning. A jury .of inquest was summoned yesterday morning, but, for reasons deemed satisfactory -to the Co roner, was adjourned over till to>day. (iAukoted.—A tan early hour on Wed nesday night, a young man, named Horatia Young, a returned prisoner, while proceeding to Camp Leo, was in veigled into an old lot on Broad street by a youth whom he had inquired the way of, whero ho was seized by four men, who were in waiting, thrown to the ground, and robbed of his pocket book, containing one hundred and fifty dollars in money, his furlough and other papers, lie was also divested of lfls shoes and hat, the latter being replaced by an old greasy cap, which the thieves had provided themselves with. The unfor tunate victim walked into the chief of police office soon after the occurrence, in his stocking feet, whero ho gave an ac count of his adventures and requested assistance to enable bin to arrive safely at his destination. Committed to Castle Thunder.—The following parties were committed to Castle Thunder yesterday : F. Gtnini, conscript; F. Jackson, Twenty fourth Virginia cavalry, and R F. Hitchcock, member of Gilmour's ca valry, charged with being professional garroters. L'pon their persons were found slung-shots, lock picks and va rious other implements usually in the possession of desperadoes. Samuel W. Bradly, of Henrico county, charged with aiding persons to escape to the Yankees, and James Gillinwater and William Ferris, of company 0, Fourth Virginia battalion, and Charles Pey cheux, charged with attempting to es cape to the Yankees. i£ the case o( Bradly, it is alleged that he agreed to put the three latter across the lines lor a stipulated sum, having first received one thousand dollars as a stake. The parties were overhauled by Confederate scouts when within a couple of miles of the enemy's picket lines. Arrested for Murder.—George Wl Deas, white, was arrested yesterday af ternoon, and committed to the lower cage, on tho charge of killing James Clarke, who was shot in Rocketts on Wednesday night. City Council.—A special meeting of the Council was held yesterday after noon for the purpose of considering the tax bill. The subject was discussed till a late hour, when an adjournment was agreed to in order to perfect the bill. Correction.—ln our Hustings Court proceedings, yesterday, the case of Ca therine Collins was inadvertently re ported as having been convicted of steal ing. It should have been receiving stolen goods. Honorably Acquitted.—The case of Thomas Stratton was called up before the Hustings Court last week, but tho ac cused was discharged without any ex amination of witnesses.
