General Singleton and Judge Hughes, tl c Yankee commercial agents, and not ■ ■-, ;e commissioners, have arrived in the city, and are stopping at the Spotswood Hotel. __ TO TH!: VOTERS OF THE SE~ i EN TE CON G B ESSIONAL DIS TRICT OF VIR (; IN!A. Fellow Citizens : The shattered eondi -, of my health, with my advanced „ : ... considerably transcending the three score vearsand lei- allotted toman, hay :,g disqualified mc for the discharge of i -prescntative duties which you did me the honor, two years ago, by an un solicited choice, to confide to me, I feel constrained, by a sense of duty and pro priety, to resign into your hands the trust I then received from you, and which I am now physically incapable of cxc* « uting. 1 have honestly and faithfully endeavored to serve you, according to the measure of my ability; but, as I appre hended when you calledaae from my re tirement, my strength and constitution have utterly sunk under the attempt. For the last six weeks I have been con fined to my bed by a severe and compli cated illness; and the consequence has been, much to my chagrin and regret, that yon have been unrepresented in Congress upon some of the most impor tant questions which have occupied the attention vf that body during its present i ession. At my time en life, and with the shock ah adj received from repeated attacks of disease, brought on in the public service during the last three or four years, I have 10 right to expect, whatever may be the result of my present illness, that in the future 1 shall be better able to serve you than at present. Your interests, and the interests of the great cause in which are are engaged, are of too important a . tra ter to be committed to so precarious and feeble a guardianship. The la bors of the present session of Congress drawing to a close, and the period of the general State elections being now at hand, when my place can be supplied without putting you to the trouble of a special election, I have thought the mo ment most suitable for resigning into your hands, as 1 now do, the remnant of ly representative term. One word only, which my strength permits, in conclusion. Besides the gi ib ful recollection 1 shall always che rish of the confidence and encourage ment with which you have sustained me through a long career of public service, we shall still be bound together by corn m : s< atiments and common interests in the future as in the past. My con stant prayers shall be addressed to heaven to make that future as propitious and glorious as heart can wish. But whatever it be, I share it with you.— " Whither thou goest, I will go; where thou lodgest, I will lodge ; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my tied; and where thou diest will I die, and there will I be buried." In the trance or di can* I was running to and fro trying to stop it. I huve acted that part since its commencement impartially. I have felt as Christ felt on the Cross, suspended between the two thieves. I would that both bhould cni oy the kingdom of Heaven. To bring this about, it is necessary to dispense with all Party and Sec tarianism. Is the South willing to make the sacri fice 1 It she is, lam certain the North will agree. I have traveled over both sections since this war commenced, und I must say I have seen as strong a desire on that side for Peace as on this. The manner of bringing it about is the grand desideratum. Neither will give way ; hence it mußt last forever, unless one side or the other shall sooner become ex tinct. Oh, what a ehamc, what a disgrace to the Christian religion. The commandments of our Lord and Saviour and the Farewell Address of our. beloved Washington are no longer thought of or respected. For the sake of humanity, will the two Presidents resign their position sad let us, the peo ple, have another National Election. I design to portray to the people of the once United States the beauties and glory growing out of a Union of all the States. Selfishness is no part of true happi ness, nor of the Christian atligion. May our Common Father, God, again unite us under the Banner of his Son, is the prayer of L. L. LEE, of rrihee George, Virginia. March lat, 1865. P.
