So that if Max has any gold mine to give, be had best give it at once. | It ib announced that Ca_Bl*ss Dv mass con templates a visit to this country during the next spring or summer. It was about twenty-five years ago, we think, when Mr. Dtennsrs tirst did our country tne honor of a visit. He dropped in upon us m a neighborly wav, and wan received with im mense hospitality. At that time, though a vouug man, he was in the meridian of his fame, "and his popularity, in the United States as in England, was unbounded. We greeted hun with a perfect furore of enthusiasm. There were some people whothought we rather over dad the matter. Thoy said wo went down upon all-fours, as it were, before tliis promising , whelp of the British lion. Hut the truth is, there I never was a more genuine outburst ot good , feeling than that which the great mass of our j people displayed towards Di<*bs*. Sosne flunkyism there was, as there always will be, | but the most of us loved Boz like n brother, j We identitled the man with his works, and his works badalway* been true to humanity. We WsrS his debtors for a vast amount of fun, and, , what was better, he had taught us to sysapa thiae with the poor and sufferim*. He bad never degraded his pen by servility to rank and nasssjT. His heroes and heroines had been al ways of the common mould, aud when a noble man figured in his productions it was not much , to his advantage. Such a genius and such a nature as shone in his pages touched an elec- Bras chord in the soul of t km republican country. We welcomed him with both hands and our , whole heart. I His first speech at a Boston festival rather , opened our eyes. It was evident in that speecb that, while we fancied him hugely, he did not ; much fancy us. That make*, a greati difference iv matters of friendship and love. Those sen- , timents, to live long, must be somewhat reci procal. Perhaps we did not deserve a re torn oi our confiding affections, but the fault that Dicbe.ns found with us in his first speech, and as-real many other speeches, need not have made our cbitfiner so cold ; and the making it the constant burthen of his song was not cal- , culated to rAise him in our esteem. One great ■inTwhich it appeared he had come across the water to reform, was the neglect to protect by j a copy-right law the property of British an- j Bjrs in their productions. No one can dis te the justice of such a law, and it ought to vebeen enacted long ago, but we had not expected to be lectured on our shortcomings at that time, in that way, and by that man. It gave a kind of mercenary aspect to our gay cavalier that chilled the ardor of our young affections and dispelled the halo of romance that had encircled our Hero's brow* »»**-" festivities to Dickens went on all the same, and his progress through the country was a perfect ovation. At last, having spent two months in travel ins; through sixteen States of the American Union, Mr. Chaklem Dienvna returned to Eu rope and wrote a book. We expected it would be a candid, just and somewhat friendly esti mate of our national character and habits. We did not look for anything very philosophical or profound, but had the right to antici pate a brilUant and good-humored portraiture of American life. There were some who, pre dicted we should catch it, but it was believed that if satirized at all, it would be in such ar tistic style that we should enjoy our own dis section. But we were all to be grievously dis appointed. The book overflowed with gall and venom. There was scarcely a drop of the milk of human kindness in it. It out-Trolloped Trollope, and in downright misrepresentation nnd abuse threw Hall and Mabyatt into the shade. As a specimen of wit and humor, it was beneath contempt. He came back at ns in the same style in H Martin Chuzzlewit.' Instead of a Hamascns blade of bright and tren chant satire, he cut us up with a rusty butcher knife, which, considering us a nation of swine, he probably thought the most, appropriate Weapon. Forgetting his own caricature in Pickwick ot French travelers in England, he himself enacted the part of Count Ssobltobk In America. He gravely declared in his vera cious sketches that all American men chew tobacco and talk through their noses, and that all American women are ignorant. He spoke of public journals in the North as the Sewer, ths Stabber, the Family Spy, the Private Lls tener, ths Peeper, the Plunderer, the Keyhole | .Reporter, the Howdy Journal—a nomenclature possibly suggested by his own character and instincts. He represented an Intelligent Ame rican editor speaking in language like this: i •'There a'iat aa engine with its biler bust In these free United States so nummuxed to a most e-tarnal smaslifk that young srtttar, Ciueen Victobis, to h** luxu rious location In the Tower of London, will be when she reads the next double extra number of my paper. May the British Lion have his tall eradicated by the nobis bill of the American Eagle, and be taught to play upon ths Irish harp and the Scotch fiddle the an chaatiag music of Yankee Doodle." He was thrown Into ■paams, of course, by the slave Institution which his own country had estab lished In America. " This the land of Liber ty l They're so fond of Liberty in thU part of thsghrhs that they hay her and seU her and carry her to market with 'em. They've such m pastlim for Liberty that they can't help tak ing liberties with her. The Stars wink upon Ihe Moody Stripes, nnd Liberty pnlls down Bar cap upon her eyes, nnd owns Oppression |n its vilest aspect for her sister." Snch are sosne specimens of tbe " American Notes " and •'Martin Ohunslewit'' productions, which may prove tho author not oeu> to be at home in the realm of netkm, hot never to leave thont, and whun certainly do not show to ad vantage by ths side of Dr. Tocsbivii-lc's pro found volume upon America, or the djgui «* Xtovd Masrstn, and I fled observation* of J*" tl| - m „ n to ! •>"-J Cdl -t l*el«ig either by which Mr IMctiM emm 1 M ,aalpoM tlo nor > which N ... ,U>,>, "The Ratline jewel of his undo- { i r:™* ,% spar«ft% i» the head of a toad, , touching pathos of ltd. portrait- j V<i human suffering may have no deeper louree> than the equally beautiful sentlmen lalitv or Stkrsk. Neither they nor we can , do without it 1 ___ It is announced with great satisfaction by the English journalists that Queen \ icrontA will formally emerge from her long se clusion since, the death of Prince Albert on the occasion of the opening ot the new Parliament, next month. The Queen, once so popular, lias suffered of late a great decline in the enthusiastic favor which once heralded with delight her most m siguilicant movement. It is not that she was no longer the model matron of the that she ceased to be the national idol. On the contrary, the cause of complaint is that she ims suffered the sorrows of widowhood to make her forgetful of Use duties «*<£**. It is not the neglect of official responsibilitu s which is charged to her account. She has not omitted the performance ot one dat> upper taining to her royal position, and it stated that she has given even more of hr time and attention to the dispatches and ap j pointments submitted by her »**"*"»* approval than during the lifetime of her kus band. As a mother, she has educated h. t children to be an honor to her name. The just cause of complaint is th, decay into which court ceremonials and us- Uvitfe. have fallen of late years. The London i shop-keeping interest, the cockney W^ l^* the gewgaws and flummeries of the faslnon able world, have been thrown into , Now that the queen has been forced by then 1 incessant complaints to sacrifice her prefer ! ence of retirement, and to yield a privi -1 lege which is performed by her humblest I sublets, the welkin rings with rapture. She lis once more the best of Queens, the paragon lof ladies, the model mother of her people. i That which constitutes the model mother ! being not to train her own offspring in the way they should go, but to hold the baby 1 Bull in her lap, and feed him with a silver ; spoon till his eyes stick out of his head with fatness. ___ __,„] We have been taught by British journalists to believe that America is the only laud In which the dollar reigns supreme. We are obliged to yield the palm to England which converts its sovereign into a golden call, and falls down and worships. An effort is being made by the pupils and graduates of the Western Female High School in Baltimore to erect a suitable monument over the remains of the dead poet, Eduar A. Poe. Virginia must wish well to that enter prise, for Poe was her man of mark in the hte i rary world. As a critic, a story-teUer and a I poet, he had few equals. The Raven is one of the most exquisite lyrics in American litern- I *- ure i The errors and vices of Poe's life have been sufficiently commented on. Such consolation as tbe small can find in discovering that the great partake of their own moral infirmities is not withheld from them in the sad career of one of the more gifted of the children of men. But they will be referred to only in a spirit of charity by those who are themselves in a posi tion to cast the first stone at the victim of human frailty. With the benevolent purpose of w-arning men of genius to beware of the ! rock upon which so many gallant barks have j struck and gone down, but from no other mo- J tive, is it justifiable to draw the mantle from the face of the shipwrecked mariners and exr pose the traces of the tempestuous passions which hurled them upon the shore. , The literary fame of Pos should be dear to | his native State. Such a pearl should not be suffered to drop from her august brow and be | heedlessly buried in the sands of time. No , blade like his, of so true a temper and so keen Jan edge, has ever flashed in the van of Virgi nian letters. If Poe had been a resident of New J England, he would long ago have had a memo rial remembrance worthy of his splendid ge nius. That his grave should be so long neg lected cannot, we trust, be attributed to any want of appreciation of literary merit. It is only lately that we have erected a monu ment to the first of mankind in war and peace, and many of our most illustrious personages sleep in obscure and unmarked graves. There is a strange indifference to the visible and per manent expression of our undoubted devotion to the memory of great men. We say that they have a monument in our hearts, forget ting how perishable is the shrine, and that the only evidence we can give to posterity of | the inward vSrtne Is the outward sign.
