J&fnmmd jjhspBttft. MONDAY NOVEMBER 8, I860. "The Day after the Fair." Excitement, however agreeable, cannot long-be maintained with a due regard to health and comfort. It is well that the four days of glorious animation, of earnest in terest in the cause of the general improve ment of the country and the promotion of the welfare of society, should have its con clusion, and men should rest awhile. No thing draws more heavily upon the mental and physical resources than the action and excitement of great enterprises; and that exhaustion which is produced from this cause requires rest and repose for recupe ration. The great Fair was succeeded by a very proper quiet and repose; under which we could not only recover our exhausted ener gies, but reflect upon what had been done tor the general good. The streets on Satur day, though tar from being dull, presented tho aspect of placidity compared with the surging masses which thronged tliem for the four preceding days. Some of the visitors from the country had remained to epjoy a few hours of quiet in attending to their business, and they were actively cm- j ployed in investigating the stocks of the stores and supplying their wants. This city has a great deal to felicitate itself for from the manifestation of feeling elicited by the Fair and from the public declarations of intelligent strangers in favor of t he immense advantages which she eu joys in reference to those manufacturing i pursuits which go to make up the power I and prosperity of communities. For all j the purposes of manufacturing she was j placed ahead of any other city in the esti mation of all well-informed and practical men, and she may well look forward to period of great prosperity. Iron and coal combined are the greatest sources of power of a nation, and no locality which is the point of concentration of these great agents can fail to reach a high state of wealth and strength. Richmond is the grand point of concentration of these great elements, and therefore she is destined to be one of the greatest inland cities in the United States, if not the very greatest of thcin all. We shall have occasion to refer to the several points bearing upon this interesting subject?mineral, manufacturing, and agri cultural. The Fair has suggested nothing that is not beneficial to Virginia and to Richmond. To this city the Fair itself is of immense advantage; and as it promises to increase every year in magnitude and importance. *0 its advantages for Richmond will be an nually increased. We may indeed look forward with the highest hopes. The future of this city must be great. Every element of popular welfare and political strength conspires for her advantage. A few years will tell the story for Richmond as well as Virginia. Brighter auguries no people ever had. As suredly every mind must he impressed with the fact, and years hence, when the highest hopes of the most sanguine of our people have been realized, they will, many of them, remember with delight their re flections in 1869 " The day after the Fair." The Prize-Ring is in the Ascendant in vite West.?A great fight was to take place lust week near Cincinnati between Allen and McCoole, who have had one fight, in which Allen was victor. Allen is an Eng lishman, McCoolk an Irishman. The Cin cinnati Commercial entertains its readers with portraits of the adversaries and of Coyne, an honorable member of the P. P.. who has challenged and expects to fight Patbey Reabdok in the same ring that Al len and McCoole fight in. The partisans all around are "gassing" freely. Just as McCoole was about to leave St. Louis (bis home) for the scene of war his "colors" were presented to him, with much speech ifying and jollification. We seethat among the friends of McCoole i>reseut was Colo nel N'at. Claiborne, " well known in these parts." He, too, made a speech. We never knew* him to fail when he got a chance, if "Nat." is prophet, McCoole is about to take a high position. This is the eulogy and the prophecy of Colonel Claiborne : " Mike McCoolk is the finest specimen of a " man God ever made ; and alter the com " tag fight, he will be the champion of the " Universe." A Mrs. Daniels, at a late Workingwo men's Convention in New York, amidst the general scolding and discontent of the au dience, had the frankness and boldness thus to speak, of the "rougher sex": "There " are honorable men in all classes, and men '* naturally tended to houesty. It must be "remembered that capitalists sprang from " tiie laboring classes, and that they often "accumulated property by the hardest " work." There was a general desire to get at her and scratch her, but no one was bold enough to set the example. The Winchester News misrepresents the Dispatch. We are anxious that Judge ?Iounston should be allowed to take his seat. As lo what we said of his sensitiveness, he bus endorsed it by giving notice that be icill hold a term of his court in Tazewell. This work is gotten up in very elegant style and is finely illustrated. It is a valu able addition to knowledge of the Arctic re gions, and an exceedingly entertaining vol ume. The Romance of Spanish History. By John S. C. Abbott, Author of " The I1 reuch Revolution," Ac., with Illustrations. New York : Harper & Brothers. This work, from a well-known pen, we take to be one of interest. Mr. Abbott?or Dr., we suppose he is, for everybody is Doc tor now-a-days?is not a safe guide in any matter where social or religious prejudice may have the opportunity of warping his judgment, lie is essentially puritanical. But in the matter of the Romance of Spain he may be sufficiently mesmerized by that! which he undertakes to describe to shield it somewhat from his bigotry. The romance and chivalry or Spain in hor better days were enough to excite the admiration of the most rigid Puritan; and we might even trust Abbott to describe them. Wrecked in Fort. A Novel.
